GREAT IDEA! Then we could all see the towns, country side, that comprise the edges of Sussex. For me that's more learning more of the county. My learning process for other counties is much lacking. We could use a double of you in other counties too. You're my #1 learning source for learning about England. Don't have time for book reading. THANK YOU .

It’s interesting how there is something intrinsic about old buildings that enables us to look at them and say “That was obviously a cinema, a bank, a corner shop, a pub, a chapel or a railway station” long after their original use has been changed. Sadly this cannot be said about their modern equivalents.

    • @dcarbs2979
      @dcarbs2979 4 ปีที่แล้ว

One of the strangest is the boat shaped building with a pirate on top by the town main bus stop. Has been a sushi bar, pasty shop, bank and I think originally a pub called The Ship Inn, which is still evident from it's remains today.

Great to see the town Richard. Along that stretch of beach there is the Canadian war memorial. There is a story or two to be told about about the Canadian soldiers who stayed in and around Worthing in 1942. They eventually went off to fight in the ill faited Deippe Raid over in Normandy. The Normandy beaches are in a virtual straight line across the channel from the Worthing coast. Apparently the soldiers whilst here were a bit rowdy and its been recorded that nearly 22000 children were born to Canadian servicemen during their time in England. Not just a raid on Dieppe then.

Hello, the closed pub you showed at the end of the precinct was The Montague and the bingo hall was the Plaza Cinema way back in the mists of time. I used to park my bike around the side of the Plaza when I went to the Carioca Night Club. The Premier Inn was until recently the Beach Hotel and further along where the Travel Lodge is was of course the Berkeley Hotel.

    • @dcarbs2979
      @dcarbs2979 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I thought The Beach was now the Beach Residences? (Hence the name) I know it's close by and looks almost the same..I forget how far apart they are or even which one replaced The Beach. I remember the Beach being dismantled as I had a Rowlands Road shop then (2012).I think the Premier Inn replaced the Kingsway soon after (2014?). Another Regency hotel is being dismantled along there too.

I've got relatives buried at St. James Churchyard, Egerton, Ashford Borough, Kent; St. Mildred's Churchyard at Tenterden, Ashford Borough, Kent; St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard Great Chart, Ashford Borough, Kent. Worthing is a beautifully town, which as yet the developers have not destroyed.
A friend, Ray Trader, for many years worked at the bingo hall that you walked past. It use to be the social hub for Worthing ladies. Some prizes were apparently worth several thousands of pounds!
It’s good to see that very few of the shops are empty.
Always good to look up at the old buildings, especially in Brighton and Hove, along Western Road 👍

It would be interesting to see if you can find the locations of old black and white photographs, of buildings and high streets from the last century or earlier. You could then find where the photographer stood to show the present day to compare. I’m sure your followers would even send in requests for the future locations on your trip.

I remember when Astons the chemists had a shop at the east end of Montague Street (I don't know if they still exist) and painted above the shopfront was their telephone number, which was Worthing 1 (or maybe 2?). That was a long time ago, when I was a small child. I also remember in the late 1950s when I was about 18, taking dancing lessons in the ballroom above the Plaza cinema where I met my first girlfriend - sad to see the place is now a bingo hall.

Hi Richard. Very interesting start. Of course if you started from the pier you should have headed north towards WH Smith then left. You could have past the old what was Woolworths. That use to be a theatre. I had worked there after I left school. I did come across a person up in the store room. Turned out it was a clown that past on stage. Also the other end of your journey on the clip just missed, although you mentioned it, The Brunswick Hotel. Which is another place I've worked although it's in Thorne Rd, has recently been called The Bay and is back to being called The Brunswick PH.

9:32 The corner building still has remanants of it's furniture business sign in the large cartouche panel on the 1st floor. Not sure how old, probably 1890-1930. I had my old shop a few doors down, back when it was the Sandwitch Bar. The old Ladbrokes (10:30), I think was a bank in the 1960s or earlier, I vaguely remember seeing a sign for it - Old Provincial? (I may be thinking of somewhere else similar and nearby). There are some spectacular little details if you look. Some have been shown in this video. The Beach Residences replaced the regency Beach Hotel around 2012/2014 - the demolition/rebuild period. Similar and close to the Premier Inn.

I'd call the series "Way Out West". I actually haven't been to Worthing since I left high school in 2007 (I don't think) so I'm REALLY feeling the nostalgia seeing these videos. I've grown up and travelled the world since but Worthing hasn't changed at all by the looks of it. And that's a good thing. Because one by one these towns and cities are slowly losing their identity. Brighton feels the need to run buses like the NYC Metro service. I still haven't worked out why...

Excellent! Excellent! I hope you follow the pre-1970 boarder as your map suggested (and the closest you are going to get to the original Saxon boundary) which would also bring you along the old Tonbridge (Tunbridge) Parish boundary which passed through the middle of modern Tunbridge Wells, just yards from the wells.
I'll post some of my 1970s pictures of Montage Street and environs on the Bald Explorer FB page when you post this video there. The Montague Street you walked down is the same street as immortalised in Leo Sayer's "Moonlighting" (he went to the art college in Union Place Worthing). The old cinema, now a Bingo hall, was the Plaza. It is a shame you didn't venture down Western Place and into Western Row, a hidden gem in Worthing that your American audience would love.

Did you know that a small guide book entitled 'The Sussex Border Path' compiled by Aeneas Mackintosh and Ben Perkins of The Sussex Rights of Way Group was published in 1980. I've no idea whether it's still available or not, but you never know. I came over with a group of French hikers to do part of it and they were very amused to see that it even included a warning about nettles lurking in the corner of a particular field.

I think this could be a great idea. Who knows maybe in 100 years someone with a map might follow your journey.

Quite a task you are taking on Richard, but never the less a great idea, walking the Sussex border. I am looking forward to joining you. By the way is that another new Jumper I saw under your jacket?

You are very welcome to join me, Dennis. Yes, that the last of the recent set of four winter jumpers I bought. The fifth was a gift. I don't want to look the same in each episode.

Good morning Richard. I see you are fit and well, getting some fresh air and exercise, but where is Julia and Joseph?
Are they both well. I hope they haven’t succumbed to the dreaded virus.

Cabbage trees on the Marine Parade. Why a New Zealand tree in Worthing? Guess you call them something different there. Just hit me when you went back to the sea front

@@robertbray8590 Torbay palms were introduced here in the nineteenth century and were able to flourish on the south coast due its mild climate. They create a more exotic look and can be seen in many English and Welsh seaside resorts. It’s a ‘thing’ , you hardly ever see them inland!

The local council has just tried to remove those palms, but a public outcry has forced them to relent! The Cabbage trees are staying in Worthing!!!!

BORDERLANDS -- Probing the Sussex Perimeter (verse 359 of 360)
    Worthing is 'exasperating'
    Mr Pevsner stated..
    Part Bournemouth part Brighton
    a concoction that he hated..
    A stickler with expectation
    miles off the scale..
    Fussy and pedantic
from which planet did he hail?

Have you ever thought about putting your local walks in a book always found there's a lack of local walks to be found

I wonder how many days of walking it'll take.
The back of the Premier Inn is a blot on the townscape and a disgrace. Why do they use this spray render that stains and looks scruffy within a few months .

Like your videos but you could do with dispensing with what at best can be described as the crimson do do. It’s distracting. Just get a poppy in future.
