I got a bit confused when u used the polygonal lasso tool, I cant seem to fill the selected area correctly. The colour comes over my black shadow soft brush strokes. I would be so grateful if you could explain how you have set the layers and which layer comes first and which last! Thank you so much for the beautiful tutorials though! Really helpful for young aspiring designers such as myself!

If i m understanding you correctly,
Yes you press alt + backspace to fill the color in the selected area
Put the layer of the colored thing above the layer of shadows
Click on the colored thing layer and select a blending mode such as multiply, linear dodge, etc. (Whatever works)
And please tell me if it works
