It depends on your relations with politician. If you have good political connections you become DM within 4-5 years and if your relations with politician is very good you can stay DM for a long time.

@@rakshitakurubar3761 It is overrated or not depends on individual perspective, there is too intense competition there and still people will spend 5-6 years preparing and left with nothing. There are so many new career options which many don't know and you can do extremely well there. Why run in the rat race where you know chances of getting not selected is very very high. And even if you become an IAS, the only perk I can see is respect, which you can get in so many ways.
This is my perspective, everyone will have different opinions.
