I'm actually pretend-dating a kid just so we can sing Neutral Milk Hotel together. He sings like an elf, and I'm a sucker for his voice. He's way younger than me, though, so... art comes first I guess? I do love his voice though. Will post results soon. NMH chords are easy AF, so is the melody, especially for my "BF" sweet soprano's voice. The trick is getting him to FEEL the lyrics, like Mangum does... I think this is a good one for starters. As I said, will post results as soon as he can sing this like it's supposed to be sung... currently, he sings it wonderfully (even better than Mangum), but without an ounce of the emotional appeal... Am I being a harpy? 'Cause I literally don't care... the world will thank me when I train that kid. We will be greater than NMH, no doubt about it.

I was obsessed with the audio recording of this song performance back around 2003. To me, it is the definition of ethereal, and launched for me a thousand dreams. I'm overjoyed to find a video recording of this moment on TH-cam.
I love how to each of us, his lyrics may mean different things, but collectively theyre all as important in theyre own regards. Julian is also the most adorable man ive seen he always looks ecstatic to just give us audible love.
Saw him perform this song in october in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio, it was amazing. There is a video of it on the NMH facebook page. He looks somewhat the same and still has the unique voice. Really was an amazing experience because this is one of my favorite songs ever.
I knew that Jeff Mangum performed Engine as well as In the Aeroplane over the Sea and Oh Sister that night but I hadn't seen this video before. Thanks for putting this and the other two videos up. @@gilchrist You know, I was wondering this too, but around 1:10 the camera zooms out, and it says 99 in balloon letters at the back of the stage. Normally, people celebrate the year that's coming up rather than the year that's leaving, so I think this is probably 1998. This also matches the timeline on Jeff Mangum's Wikipedia page, where it says the group sort of disbanded after the 1998 New Year's Eve show due to Jeff's ill health.
This is one of the first songs that made me cry. Jeff just has that voice, tone and acoustic tuning that makes me so happy.

This song portrays a beautiful loneliness to me. The bittersweet chord progression with the lyrics. I dont know, it just speaks that to me.
"SCOTTIEEE"
His voice is so absolutely incredible and powerful.
For all the people asking what the "bow instrument" is called, is called a "Sing-saw"
Singing saw and/or musical saw, rather
It’s literally a saw, I don’t know about this one in particular, but they can cut you. Most metal instrument (not counting brass)

Just started art school and am struggling with making friends but listening to this makes me calm and feel okay

Pretty thing to find on youtube, really greatfull for it man.
Many composers doing excessively complex songs. Many poets writing long intelectual poems. Sometimes, the simpler the best.
You can always see that while he loves music he hates being on stage. I get it.
If you saw Jeff Mangum walking down the sidewalk today, 10 years on would you recognise him?
Huh you can tell he hates being filmed even back in the day. Every time he made eye contact with the camera he freaks out a little.
>mild
I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. He just seems nervous.
he's just of a more timid nature
