    I really can’t believe how relaxed Jazzland was about loose articles. That is insane to me. With all the recent accidents with flying phones, that would never happen anymore. I’m glad you guys got to visit this park before it got hit by Katrina.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, things were much different back then. Cameras were much larger, yet there weren't nearly the same amount of accident reports that you see today. I remember taking my first color VHS camcorder, with a separate recording deck, on coasters. No one blinked an eye. I loved the relaxed camera policies parks had back then.

    • @huntzzio
      @huntzzio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I mean everyone didn’t always have expensive phones that would fly out of their pocket, so loose article policies didn’t really need to be there I guess. Wild

      I know Six Flags was trying to improve shading before the park closed. However, I would have loved some trees back when this was recorded as there was zero shade. It was incredibly hot and muggy.

    This is incredible footage Sean, thank you for sharing it. I've always enjoyed the coordinated "whoa!!"s on the Muskrat Scrambler POV. I've been fascinated with this park and its brief history for ten years now, and there is very little footage available of the park before the Six Flags rebrand. It really did look like a charming place with friendly staff, and Mega Zeph could be a top ten wooden coaster if it was still running today. This place deserved time to grow and receive new attractions, but Katrina had other plans. I'm just glad we have videos like this that show us what a fun place it was for the short time it was around.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It really was a fun place. I looked forward to visiting again, but that never happened. I used to help Keith McVeen with the audio in his early animations he did for parks. He would ask if I had in my collection, or if I could go to a park and record some coaster sounds for animations he was working on. For instance, he asked me to record the sounds of Power Tower so he could use that audio in the official animation for Six Flags Over Texas's version of the ride, He had asked if I had any sounds of a mouse coaster and people enjoying the ride. I told him it was goofy beforehand but did send him the audio of the collective whoas. He thought it was funny but declined to use it, as it does sound pretty staged. Ha ha. I believe I found some better audio for him.

    Your POV of the drop side of the tower will always be one of my favorite clips on this whole platform. The fact they let you film was AWESOME. And Muskrat looked like it went HARD. I’d love to see a new coaster with Mega Zeph’s layout. Moving a coaster of that age that’s been sitting for that long at that location would never be a good idea. A new ride with an identical layout would be the next best thing. One can dream.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We were quite surprised at the camera policy considering that is around the time that parks were getting really strict about taking items onride. It would be great to see the park reopen someday and if not, I do believe Mega Zeph would be easier to rebuild than a standard wooden coaster. Mega Zeph's structure is all steel. The wooden track would be the most difficult to move, and considering its condition, a complete retracting would be needed. Muskrat was indeed a very strong ride. That was the first time I had ridden a L&T mouse. I have ridden a couple others in Tennessee and Mexico and they were also just as strong on the laterals.

      This ride was often down and when it did operate most often the front seats were closed off. The ride had balance issues which often led to the ride stalling out in the upside down position! I had witnessed this a few times. It required maintenance to resolve the issue. It has a very interesting ride and I would try to ride it in the front any chance I could get. Because it rotated and spun upside down it gave some interesting visuals. It was also a fairly high capacity flat ride and seemed to be very popular on busier days.

    wow, it’s awesome to see this footage of the park operating. it was honestly such a beautiful park. so colorful. i never lived or visited new orleans but the story of how this park came to be and how it became abandoned is so fascinating to me. i was born in 2002 so i was 3 when hurricane katrina happened. it’s absolutely WILD that this entire theme park is abandoned because of the prolonged salt water exposure from the park being underwater for like a month. the damage was tremendously beyond repair. it’s just so interesting, sad, and eerie to see that a park once full of life is now just sitting there neglected for all these years. it’s also NUTS that this park has been closed down longer than it was in operation! it’s crazy. also, wow, this video was before 9/11 too!!! wow. did you guys film your reactions to 9/11? JAZZLAND is now Swampland. ...

    I spent quite a few days, OK A LOT, at Jazzland (and SFNO) as young adult. It was close and affordable with some solid rides. SF made it somewhat better with the additions of a few rides & coasters.
    Supposedly they were to announce a waterpark addition in late 2005. But we all know Katrina ruined that.
    The Fabbri Cataclysm was a rare treat and the Pirate Ship did get on up there! The Frisbee ride was one of our favorites.
    And let's not forget MegaZeph... With a little track work and re-profiling (the double up was a back breaker) on the back stretch, that would have been a top 5 woody. It's also the last standing coaster with a trick track...
    Man I miss that park, no matter how bad the area got in east New Orleans

      We never got to ride the Frisbee there. I had ridden a few others so I was looking forward to riding Jazzland's version. I wish I had the chance to visit the park again. I drove by it in 2017 when I was in the area for work for a week. It was sad seeing the park in the condition is currently sits.

    A good park with a ton of potential. A shame it would all be gone within 5 years.

      It was a lot of fun to visit that place. When we were walking out, we all were in agreement that our day was really special.

      I used a Sony MiniDV camcorder. I think it was a TRV-8. When I went to edit the video, I increased the colors a bit and rendered it in 60fps. I do this with a lot of my older footage, Plays back a lot smoother.

    Hi from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦. Really enjoyed your video. I would have loved to have ridden Mega Zeph, it looked so cool. So sad it was wiped by Katrina. Why was Zydeco Scream closed? Cute little park. 😍

      Mega Zeph was a very surprising ride. We hadn't heard much about it and were pleasantly surprised when we rode it. I drove by the park in 2017 when I was in the area for work and it looked so sad. :(

      Yeah, but it was Six Flags New Orleans then -- which truthfully did close in 2005 due to Katrina. :)

    This park should not have been built in the inner city of new orleans. If this park was built north of lake pontratrain, it would most likely still be around today.

      My guess is they looked all over for land big enough for what they needed. It was in a strange location for sure.

      I never made it to the park when it was branded Six Flags New Orleans. However, I really enjoyed it as Jazzland. It would have been great had the park been able to be reopened so others could experience it.
