Question: Why does England do so much silage instead of baled hay? Is most of the farming done by contract or is it smaller farms that do it?

Making Hay is a very high risk operation in the UK and in practice only viable for low fertile situations where the bulk of crop quantity
is quite moderate and preferably downright low. A thin stemmy crop can be turned into hay in 48 hours under hot conditions, but a thick leafy crop can take weeks. Very high risk in a UK situation and because rain during making severely reduces quality (despite re-drying) due to fungal attack and leaf loss, a wet spell during making can result in the whole crop being lost and turned into very expensive manure.
There is all so a growing bio-gas industry In the United Kingdom with over 150 Anaerobic digestion
plants that have demand for high quality silage thus making silage more viable then hay.

Oliver Mayo what? You ted regardless if you make silage or hay. If you bale silage you add the cost of film or if you have a chopper then that costs a shit ton more money than a baler.
Oliver Mayo We make around 3000 bales of silage and hay combined. What im saying is that making hay is a lot cheaper because you dont need a chopper or a wrapper which you need when making silage whichever method. You should use a tedder if you want to make good quality silage.

Я делаю наоборот, сначала стопку замахну, а потом не помню как с комбайна вечером вылез. Утром приезжаю на поле и красота, все копна ровна лежат, если стопку не замахнул всё начинает ломаться, капёшки кривые.Вобщем пить вредно, но надо.

Pack Wave No England is known for its countrysides and farming, places like London and other big cities are like a can of sardines, the further North you go the bigger the countrysides
