  • This is part 2 of my caravan servicing videos. In this episode I ask some questions about caravan servicing that are frequently asked of a caravan dealer.
A huge thank you to Swindon Caravans who allowed me access to their workshops.

A great insight Dan, thanks for sharing! Love the attention to detail and would happily buy from them safe in the knowledge you're in good hands. Great to see!

Good video Dan, we bought our van at the NEC show from Kimberley's in Nottingham which is a good 3 hour+ tow away. They are more than happy for me to use my local Approved mobile service engineer. I have had a few warranty issues, mainly with my last van and they were happy to order and send the parts to my local engineer to fit under warranty who in turn invoiced the labour directly back to them. However I had a large repair on the last van due to criminal damage, it was an insurance repair done at the dealer, but the lead time for spare parts from the manufacturer was 12 weeks!

hi, just rewatching this as me and my family got a new caravan (it was a great deal!) we have a swift charisma 550 2009 now, it was a massive upgrade for us from a really old, falling apart one :)

hi dan realy enjoyed both parts of service videos, whilst waiting for our new vans arrival we were loaned a 2012 van which was for sale by the dealer, when we got our van the towing experience was totally different far better we could tell that the loan van had not had a service and was in need of one, for towing safety. thanks colin

Brilliant 2 part caravan service vlog. our caravan will be one year old in August so really need to think about getting it serviced it's just the cost that bothers me It can be expensive. I will share this second part with my husband as he enjoys these useful vlogs too. Thanks Dan All the best Rebecca Acquah

      Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for your kind words. It might be worthwhile phoning around your local dealerships and some mobile engineers too. There is no doubt that for pure servicing tasks mobile engineers would be more convenient and might be a bit cheaper. But do check what "bits" they do service etc.
      Hope it helps.

Good video. Most dealers are sadly refusing warranty work or any work if they’ve not sold you the new c’van! So behind the car industry in their work practices, the manufacturers need to have strong words with them.

I watched both videos and one thing that I'm surprised about is the brakes are different set up on the caravans v/s the campers or travel trailers here in the US. Here the trailers have electric brakes and looks like the caravans uses the hydraulic brakes but one nice thing the caravans have that we don't is the parking brake on the trailers which would be nice to have. I just find things interesting from stuff from one country to another on similar things but do different ways.

Very interesting to read of the differences in our countries. Some are noticeably different. In the UK max width is 8' (96ins).
How does that compare to the US?

The RV Industry Association supports a maximum length of 45 feet for a motorhome, a maximum allowable width of 102 inches plus up to six inches additional for appurtenances for all RVs and a maximum RV combination length of 65 feet. Here in the US.

2017 I see, what was the cost of a standard and premium service then. Better still, what would the price be of both today?. Two good video's by the way.

Just out of interest...who would be responsible for the security of the caravan if it's on the dealers compound for a week awaiting service? i.e. once serviced awaiting the owner to collect and overnight is stolen and it's comes to light that the dealer didn't re fit the locks or set alarm etc? Hope this makes sense!?

      Hi Simon,
Im sorry i simply wouldnt be able to answer. This would be a great question to put towards your insurance company and perhaps a phone call to your dealer asking that same question.
      Hope that helps.

Nice video, however, there seemed to be some confusion in relation to the "Gas Check". The gas check is a safety and performance inspection which includes a tightness test (testing the pipework and connections for leaks), appliance performance test, and visual inspection of appliances. In most cases, should an appliance be deemed as unsafe, require parts or servicing, or, the pipework require replacing due to leakage, there would be additional charges.

I know it varies around the country but approximate costs would have been handy to know.

    • @TheTrudgians

      hi,
thats a good point - but i do have a valid reason. As soon as i place a price on it, it immediately dates it (prices change etc) and as you have stated there is quite a large regional variation. I was amazed by some comments how much of a difference there was for services up and down the country.
The best thing to do is call a local dealer and also a mobile engineer and ask for recommendations.
      Hope that helps
      Dan

Bit confused... What's the difference between a mobile service resulting in having to book the van in to a dealer for warranty work and a main dealer service resulting in having to book the van in for warranty work? How is the former frustrating and the latter not?

    • @Rev-me6ml
      @Rev-me6ml 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I was meant to believe that a caravan service should take between 3 and 4 hours to do not 2 hours.
A good mobile caravan service engineer is just as good or sometimes better than the expensive dealers, either doing warranty work or just a habitation.
I agree with Nicholas there is no difference as long as the mobile caravan service engineer is fully trained (AWS) to carry out warranty work.

What about solar panels and its whole set up and hydronic heating system? Are they serviced as well?

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Victor,
Under a basic service the heating (boiler) is checked that the burners are working correctly and specifically with the ALDE wet heating system the Glycol is checked to ensure its functioning correctly and is the correct level.
As for Solar panels, the battery condition is checked, so is the battery charger. As i don't have a permanent solar panel installed, I don't know if that would be checked. It might be worthwhile checking with your local dealer if they do.
      Hope that helps.
