Not sure why people are surprised. There is a lot of literature that has been written already over the last decade that covers this and why. Most have lost the ability to research and read articles/books and come to a conclusion. In my own experience I worked in a multicultural area for just over a decade. From having discussions and trying to bring people together, I find the only way you can get different cultures together is either a giant camp fire or a food day. No one is interested in adapting or integrate. If you actual ask people, they will majority of the time tell you their not bothered or don’t see a problem why they should and leave the comfort of their own groups to do so, let alone feel welcome from other ethnic groups. It’s just a fact unfortunately.

Indeed. In fact they tried it knowing that in 1968, 75% of the native Brits agreed with Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech, and the percentage that is against mass immigration has only gone higher since. This means that if the natives were to tear down the political elite that has persistently ignored their demands for 50+ years and then throw out all the immigrants, it is only the unrepresentative political elites that forced this situation on the people that could be blamed.

I remember talking to a bar owner in Spain, in the early 90s. He told me unequivocally that in Spain, you get no help from the government for ANYTHING unless you fill out the forms and speak in Spanish. At that time the UK job centre had forms written in hindi, urdu,6 other languages, and translators were available too. Therein lies the problem; we have historically tried too hard to make it easy for immigrants to navigate the system without lifting a finger to learn english, when in fact the correct answer is 'speak english or get nothing'; just watch how fast newcomers integrate.

She is right though. There are places in the uk where police will not go for risk of offending certain communities. There are crimes against young girls that took years to solve, again to not stir up tension in a community. There are those who refuse to learn English and shops/cafes you go into and they're speaking their own language. What happened to good old customer service? Its very sad, especially when you see the face of your town changing into somewhere you do not recognise. Remember also, this is coming from Suella Braverman herself.

I ate in a Persian restaurant for the first time in my life last week. It's in Birmingham where my son just started at uni. It's in the part of the city where my dad grew up in the 30's and 40's, and nearby where my grandmother was born and raised over a century ago. So, it's changed immensely since their day to say the least.
All the staff and customers were non-white. Many were speaking Farsi, of which I speak not one word, but I can recognise it from watching the news etc.
We entered, were greeted in English, and spoken to in English throughout our very pleasant time in the restaurant. So, overall, excellent customer service.

The British people have historically been very successful in integrating different people, however that was done with relatively small numbers over longer time spans. We have taken in a very large number of immigrants over a relatively short period of time. Some of these groups have integrated better than others, but there are very large immigrant communities who live isolated lives and many bring with them their prejudices from their homelands. Just look at the Hindu versus Muslims. We have not set our expectations out clearly enough, in that we support those communities to continue to speak their native languages and we do not insist that they learn English, we also should point out that they cannot impose their religious beliefs on the rest of us. I think Hugo needs to acknowledge that such long term mass immigration has caused massive strains on our infrastructure and particularly housing. It has also held the UK from making the productivity gains that we need due to the unlimited cheap labour. No one wants our politics to slide into one divided by race but that is where we are heading.
We need effective immigration controls and the current asylum system is unworkable. It is about time that the Times and other media outlets recognise this.

Every country has a right to expect the immigrants it allows in to integrate, and immigrant communities have the responsibility to integrate (and many do) without being asked. The marker of successful communities is absolutely related to how well they’re integrated, and it is part of the reason why the second generation tends to be more successful than the first (originally immigrant) generation.

Well it's an easy thing to fix technically. Simply ban family migration, especially spouse visas, for three generations after arriving. The segregated communities she is concerned about use family migration as a life support system. Without it they would start to disintegrate and fall apart, blending in to the mainstream. People would either have to assimilate over the generations or emigrate. Another solution would be to insist as part of their status, that refugees live amongst the mainstream population, and not in areas heavily populated by their fellow countrymen. With political will there is quite a lot she could do, but there are many opponents who think multiculturalism and cultural diversity is the answer and don't like social cohesion and assimilation.

I think this is a very complex matter, which requires far more than people angrily and defiantly supporting, or disparaging, multiculturalism, and by extension immigrantion. Truth be told immigrants have been coming to Britain throughout pretty much it's entire history, and have for the most part enhanced the country. This includes an immeasurable cultural effect, which without immigration would see a very different Britain, lacking in so many aspects nowadays considered British! There are, unfortunately, problems in certain places where people have struggled to integrate, in which shadow communities have formed. While this issue definitely needs tackling, it's simply unfair to generalise when so many who have immigrated have integrated, and in doing so have enhanced both the communities in which they reside, and the country as a whole.

Wherever you've got ethnic minorities living in their own enclaves it is because [1] they hate the majority culture and don't want to be part of it and [2] they inculcate a turbo-charged version of this hatred into their children to ensure they don't marry-out. Most native Brits only know those ethnic minorities that choose to mix with native Brits, who are therefore more tolerant. However, they are not representative of the majority. The sad thing about multiculturalism is it sounds great. It sounds like a wonderful idea, until you add idiots to the mix to ruin it for everyone else.
The problem is it's not working, at least in its current form. You cannot call something multiculturalism within any culture by taking away the culture of said country. Or multiple cultures favouring some above others is not multiculturalism. It has failed as its removed the identity of the country.
That said, not all foreigners are bad, some want to integrate, learn and share, that's multiculturalism, something that works both ways. It's just the idiots ruining a nice thing for everyone I have a problem with, as well as the idiots who allow it.
