This is one of those titles that I thought I'd never get to play but thanks to this TH-cam channel.. I do. Cubivore is perhaps the most expensive title for the GameCube system when looking at NTSC copies. The Japanese release of this game can be found for cheaper. Cubivore is a weird game and it took me a long time to appreciate the concept of it. You start off as a bear and later on transform into a pig and then a chicken. Each of the three animals have their own stages and each stage has specific type of enemies by colour. The point of this game is to strategically kill these enemies and "steal" their colour so you can transform in as many cubes as possible. You start off as a single cube. It's really easy to get all the transformation for the single cube because you just have to get every colour once. When you move on to the 2-cube, you'll have to collect Red+Red to get the Red transformation.. still easy... but it goes till 6-cube. What can make this game so infuriating is the fact that sometimes you might plan out a red transformation so you kill all red enemies but then find out there's one enemy too little to make the transformation complete, so you wasted your time killing all of the red enemies. This is the strategic puzzle aspect of it. To collect all transformation in the game, you need to memorize (or guide) exactly which colours can be found in each stage so you can for example get 2 red colours in stage 1 and then 3 more in stage 2 to complete the 5-cube red transformation.. are you still following me? Anyway.. after finishing the last stage with the third animal, the chicken, you get eaten by a big cube and the game tells you that you aren't strong enough yet. What it's basically telling you is that you need to complete 100 out of 150 transformation to unlock the final boss. Now, with the new Clash+Rage colours unlocked, you basically play the entire game over again with the three animals and collect more transformations. If you manage to hit a 100 by your second run of Chicky, you'll be faced with the final boss. If not, you're gonna have to run through the game again with one of the three animals to make up for the missing transformations. Probably best to go with Chicky, as he's the only one who makes it to the 6-cube stage. So.. yep. I found this game to become quite entertaining when I was working towards the final few transformations. The final boss was cool too and worth the trouble of going through the game again a second round. There's also these permanent upgrades that you keep throughout the game such as raised attack, defense and hitpoints level. You should have these all capped during your second run though. They have a cosmetic effect on your character so that's a little interesting. Lastly, I could've ran this game quicker if I had a really good strategy down but I hadn't. Sometimes I also fucked up my transformation by not counting the enemies correctly in the stage or by accidentally killing the wrong colour mid-transformation. There's also a few transformations that totally handicap you. Like one of them can only jump backwards so everytime you try to hit an enemy, you have to do a 180 and then jump.. if he hasn't moved by then already. You can't always get into a new transformation as quickly as you want. Oh and colours are seperated in Pale, Pale/Dark and Dark. The darker the colour, the stronger your cube. Sometimes I decided to do a new Pale transformation only to be faced with a difficult boss afterwards which would take 15+ minutes to take down with my Pale colour. So yep, this could've been done quicker but I don't really expect anybody to just sit here and watch the whole thing anyway. The game is memorable for being so unique and for being so crazy expensive (it's an Atlus game), but I doubt there's much of a fanbase for this one.
"I want to live That was the first thought I had: I want to be alive" Love that line. Had this as a kid. Been missing it. Thank you for sharing this ❤️
I found this game by complete accident, and now I’m EXTREMELY HOOKED onto its “special” characteristics. It’s basically if the games “Spore” and “Space station Silicon Valley” had a child. Absolutely beautiful.
you are a god among men for making this. cubivore was my favorite game as a kid and possibly even sparked my love for my current major (genetics) and its such a damn shame its so rare because i cant ever play it myself again probably. so i thank you from the bottom of my heart for this longplay, its brought back some fond memories and reminds me how far ive come in my interests!
I remember this. Nintendo had published it in Japan, but wouldn't publish it in the US, I think because the game was deemed too bizarre or something. Atlus picked up US publishing rights. I think the Cubivores made a cameo in Melee, though.
Yes Cubivore Survival Of Fitness made a appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a trophy call Alpha it’s funny it didn’t come back to Smash Bros. till Ultimate as the Pig spirit
If I had to guess, it might also be due to the more violent nature of the game, since blood is depicted. And it’s essentially animals eating each other to grow.
I played this for weeks and weeks after a neighbors son moved away and she was selling some of his things he didn't want to take, this was so addictive and interesting, compared every pet/monster collecting game to this for awhile and I had to keep telling people what it was until eventually I found out from no one knowing what it was that it was really rare. I sold it not long after finding that out, with the 200 bucks I spent it on a bunch of stuff. Fun game, great collection system.
I was picky with my games. I always figured I was a lazy person. Too lazy to experience all these games for all they were worth. I did, however, play me a ton of Cubivore. When I see it now and realize how it could fit right into the current indie game movement, it's clear that I wasn't lazy. I just insisted on the good games.
Perhaps one of the most interesting (to say the least) games I've ever seen. Funny because a game like this actually looks pretty common in this day and age. I'm here because I remembered this title. I've never played it, but I learned about this first through game magazines back when I was young in the early 2000s. Seeing the trophy in Smash Bros Melee back then made me even more curious as to how Cubivore would be, mostly because the description said it was a "future release," if I'm not mistaken, and didn't give it a title. I still remember seeing the game sold at GameStop, and reading a review of it in the old GMR magazine. Although I admit it didn't interest me back then, I still would've loved to play it. I wish I could go back in time and experience that which I missed out on, like this game. Oh well.
i like obscure games, and my bf told me about this one that he used to play as a kid. i went to see if i could buy a copy and we saw that it costs $400 or more. he was so mad that he gave his copy away as a teen. i wish i could play it now. thank you for uploading!
If you really want to play it, just get an emulator. I like buying original copies of games myself, but when they go for stupid money, I have no regrets playing it on emulator.
How in the actual heck I never knew the existence of this game up until this video. It was absolutely one of the best games ever made for the Nintendo consoles.
This is one of those games that still to this day if I don't look up gameplay for it every few years I think it was some weird fever dream that I owned it. I still don't know how to play this game correctly and I want it again just to see if I can now understand how to properly play it cause it's still confusing as hell to me on how to unlock new areas. 🤣
Just found out how pricy this gem is now. Good thing I held onto by copy that I got for $10 from a blockbuster in '04 (That is my recollection anyway, but sure enough I checked and it is still in my collection)
I’m playing most of the titles alphabetically right now, so that title won’t take much longer. I’ve looked into it but it’s still gonna be a while. I want to do Skies of Acadia and Baten Kaitos Origins as RPG’s first
I remember seeing a copy of this at my local Gamestop many eons ago, I think it was for 15 bucks. Now it's considered to be the rarest GC game (Pokemon Box doesn't count.)
I wish you could play as more animals... or if nintendo isnt a lazy company and wouldnt listen we could get a cubivore 2 with lots more animals and maybe prehistoric ones.
It's a very slow game but it's unique and I'm sure it can be enjoyed in some settings, but then you also gotta ask yourself if the roughly $200 price tag is worth it

still one of my alltime favorite games. broke my heart when I sold it.
So is it weird that to me that when no commentary TH-camrs swear I find it weird? Or is it just me
@@chancepaladin I am mad that I sold my gamecube and ps2 along with this game, Billy Hatcher, mario sunshine and many other games.
Anyone can play any console game ever made with a PC thanks to emulation.
Thanks a lot for that correction

I need Nintendo to give them proper re-releases on NSO if they add GameCube

I find it really weird how this is a Nintendo game but it’s published by Atlus in the U.S.
I never knew that until just now and it was one of my favorite gamecube games as a kid.
It was a deal between Nintendo and Atlus, they let Atlus publish it in the U.S under license
I only know this game exists because of the spirits in Super Smash bros ultimate.
Warning: This game gets so hard if you don't plan ahead.
I made that mistake.. this video could've easily been an hour shorter
