My brother was killed a few months ago in a hit and run accident. Our best days were spent cruising the streets in a fog of Grizzly Bear melodies. I remember we played a game, first to talk loses. Music was a form of prayer for us. I still haven't lost my faith, and judging by this new work, neither have you.
I can relate to that because my friend Grant used to love this band a lot and he died about 2 years ago now and this was a band he showed me that I had vaguely heard of but never really hurt their music I just heard of their name and saw pictures of them and then he showed me the music and instantly liked it there's nothing to dislike about this band
My mom had a stroke while I was first getting into "painted ruins" and "Shields". The music was kind of an escape from the situation. Now when I hear this song especially I think of my mother. I get tears of joy and sadness at the same time. It's surreal. God bless you guys! I don't know you but I feel your pain.
Terribly sorry for your loss. My Mother-in-law was killed by a drunk driver. My partner took the death of his Mom tragically. Less than a few months later he committed suicide. As a result of drinking and driving I now have become a homeless person for the past 2 years. That driver will never pay for his crime against me. Sure we all have a bad day - try walking. Not a bad person -.just a bad day.
Chris Bear is such an underrated drummer. Grizzly Bear always has these intense, busy rhythm tracks in their songs and yet you never hear anything about him.
Musical poetry. "Dreamed the long day just wandering free Though I'm far gone you sleep nearer to me If I could find peace If this night leaves But I can't help myself So I'll walk out these wandering dreams Up the north road dressed gold and green If I could lie still as that great hill But I can't help myself Well it's calm and clear Collapsed here on the stone Delivered to this place A vision dark and cloaked And those figures through the leaves And that light through the smoke And those countless empty days made me dizzy when I woke And I live to see your face And I hate to see you go But I know no other way than straight on out the door And I can't help myself"
i remember hearing this song almost 5 years ago as the first preview of Sheilds. listening now it feels nostalgic and sad yet beautiful; when I heard this song the first time I knew it was special. Many songs take time to develop affection, but the real special ones captivate you first listen. thanks grizzly bear for all the feels.
Came back to this gem after a few years and holy moly it still has that ageless sound. Like, if you asked a rando on the street "what year is this from?"-you'd get so many differing answers.
Sleeping Ute is a mountain in Colorado near the Utah border. It’s shape looks like a man lying with a headdress and his arms crossed. The Utes have a legend saying it is a god sleeping
At 3:10, when the beat's dropped out, and all the commotion and grandness that had been building through the whole song gives way to an entirely different place, and it's just Ed and the acoustic guitar, mysterious and sweet, that's my favorite moment of the song.
I had bot a few albums at good will, this is one of them. Not opened, I never heard of GB . Was going to sell them, but once I googled it I opened it right away. I'm 60, sad I missed out years of listening to Grizzly. Now it's time to catch up.
I'm so happy I found this song. I spent three months living in the high desert of the four corners region and woke up every morning to the sun rising on Sleeping Ute Mountain. To know that humans had inhabited that region for millennia was such an incredible spiritual experience.
I must admit, I didn't like this song at first. But I didn't think I understood it. Those verses are so beautiful and gentle and call me to this world of self-reflection with a hint of sadness, and the instrumental sections remind of storms and ships thrashing across oceans. I love it. I don't know what was wrong with me.
For me, Grizzly Bear evokes the earliest childhood memories I can recall. I am 4 and at a public swimming pool in 1981 with other kids screaming and playing with joy. And the sun is bright and warm against aqua colored tiles surrounding the pool. I smell the chlorine and I am happy. Thats the power of Grizzly Bear.
That last section...wow. So unique. Grizzly Bear are masters of unique chords and instrumentation..its part of what makes them so recognizable. This is one of the best singles from an upcoming release I've heard this year.
this song and 'Sky Took Hold' is just soothing the fuck out of me while i've been locked in from a pandemic for 6 months now. been listening to this since it came out but now more than ever. and just a huge thank you for all the work put into this, cause i love choosing a different place to follow in all the layers of sounds delivered in just this one track. thanks again GB
Fuck, this is too good. I really wonder if they can top this or at least come out with something equally amazing in the future. I'll never forget how incredibly exciting this was to hear for the first time.
The key to liking Grizzly Bear is listening to all the instruments and vocals coming together and blending in sooooo beautifully.Grizzly Bear can truly call themselves musicians because it seems like they try really hard to make good music and it shows. Not a lot of modern folk/indie musicians can even come close to Grizzly Bear. I really hope they can read this comment to show how much they're fans support them.
Grizzly Bear's sound is everything to me. I've impatiently awaiting this for years now, but I see now why I needed to wait. I love how their sound has changed, even though it took me a couple of listens to understand it. It reminds me of Yellow House and I'm so pleased that stayed a part of their music. I know what I'm looking forward to this fall.
4 months and I'm seeing these guys live, feel blessed. Best band ever, the way they evolve their sound after every album and still manage to keep the fans happy is just amazing.
So weird that you say that. I just started listening to Buckley and I thought his music had a lot of Grizzly Bear flavorings to it. Strange arrangements and instrumentation’s and a heavy helping of folk.
Yes - that’s it! Huge Jeff Buckley fan for decades... but relatively new to Grizzly Bear and I adore their music but couldn’t put my finger on what it was about their songs that haunted me so viscerally. Cant believe I never made the GB / JB connection until now - it is so clear!! ❤️
2:02-2-22 electric guitar panned left, can someone tell me the overdrive unit they used? sounds like an ocd but the harmonics seem a little bit different
Crazy time signatures, rolling synthesizers, crunchy guitar licks- Grizzly Bear is single-handedly keeping psychadelic rock alive. This album is going to firmly entrench Grizzly Bear as the best band in the game right now.
goosebump city. the thing I love most about their music is that I pick up something new each time I hear it...so many amazing, unique and organic sounds that all blend so seamlessly with the melody....and the voices! gah! pure bliss. I love you, GB.
you know, i was having one of the best days of my life today, and hearing this song just made it the absolute best. thank you grizzly bear for making great music
One album in absolutely no way could ever surmount the towering success of The Beatles, which factually is the greatest rock n' roll band of all time regardless of opinions or taste in music.
A genre-bending collision of colossal and circumambient sounds. Like a shipwreck in a storm. And then the calm... It's monumental. And I like that you let the music breath amongst the confusion of instruments and styles because it never suffocates. That's really clever.
I was thinking this exact same thing last night and here you are saying it. It took me a good 10 listens but this is definitely one of their best songs. That yellow house mystique, the crunchy guitar with the swirling watery keyboard lines and the buttery fingerstyle harmonies at the end. god damn
i love how original grizzly bear is. to me, everything about them is unique and brings a wholly different emotion to my heart - not that all bands don't. i just really appreciate the beauty of their sound and cannot relate it to much else..
I just had the biggest eargasm listening to this. it's like that huge breath of fresh air you suck in after being underwater for a long time. bless grizzly bear.
“And I live to see your face, and I hate to see you go, but I know no other way than straight on out the door. And I can’t help myself.” 💔 *wow*. What a way to describe the poignance in loving (and losing) someone.
I love when bands manage to evolve their sound without losing their roots, this is a great example. Grizzly Bear song without having to necessarily sound alike past records. I can't have enough of it.

this was one of the most powerful and well written songs of the 2010s
Definitely up there, and #3 in their discography (this entire album). I come back to it every season.
Chris Bear is such an underrated drummer. Grizzly Bear always has these intense, busy rhythm tracks in their songs and yet you never hear anything about him.
Well that's why they partially named the band after him
@@MrShahid0072 I read that "Grizzly Bear" was an old petname from one of Ed Droste's ex-boyfriends
@@c.nelson3747 I was kidding 🙄
He’s a drummer i love to try and emulate! Such a fun and unique style
@@user-yl8mj8gd9j thats one of the simplest songs... ???
The opening riff cuts into you like nothing else. It's amazing.
The first chord sounds like a gunshot.
Musical poetry.
"Dreamed the long day just wandering free
Though I'm far gone you sleep nearer to me
If I could find peace
If this night leaves
But I can't help myself
So I'll walk out these wandering dreams
Up the north road dressed gold and green
If I could lie still as that great hill
But I can't help myself
Well it's calm and clear
Collapsed here on the stone
Delivered to this place
A vision dark and cloaked
And those figures through the leaves
And that light through the smoke
And those countless empty days made me dizzy when I woke
And I live to see your face
And I hate to see you go
But I know no other way than straight on out the door
And I can't help myself"
not poetry if its sung in an emotionless way
+Anna Sannino I thought I heard "if this knife bleeds" instead of "if this night leaves"
+Homeless angry black man. No.
vince guzman you cant prove me wrong grizzly bear is as stale as it gets when it comes to emotional delivery
It doesnt count those are the rules of poetry. The music is the best part anyway. Its not always about vocals.
1:34 is like the sun bursting through thick clouds. Utterly beautiful.

the lyrics to this song are phenomenal, possibly the bands best work.
reminds me so much of Arizona

The last minute of this song is really beautiful.
Heard this song on the radio while driving through the middle of Utah and it was just perfect
same...if you count utah in a video game XD
Sleeping Ute is a mountain in Colorado near the Utah border. It’s shape looks like a man lying with a headdress and his arms crossed. The Utes have a legend saying it is a god sleeping
This really reminds me of what Genesis sounded like between 1971 and 1978. Brilliant song as well as brilliant musicianship.
How could there ever be a music video prescribed to this song. A song that transcends music, being and imagination.
Theses guys need to make a new album
Davy Roger they are just read today! yay.
Adam S Taylor LIAR! NO ITS TRUE.
They have started recording a new one!
Matias Flores
Yesterday they have relased one teaser of their new álbum :')

that's Dan, not Ed
“When it’s calm and it’s clear…”
Why is this band not playing on every radio, these bands are awesome
daniel rossen is an absolute musical beast of a man
The things I love about their music...these guys can make every song sound like it's perpetually overcast weather outside. This is perfect mood music.

I spent a lot of time searching for something like Jeff Buckley and here it is. Love it.
I didn't even realize how much it sounds like Jeff Buckley.
Fabulous musicians and vocalists. This level of creativity and originality gives me hope for the future of music.
