Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1973 SF classic Soylent Green, directed by Richard Fleischer. In the year 2022, overpopulation has gotten a bit out of hand. Charlton Heston stars as a cop investigating a death that leads to a bigger issue confronting the society of the future. Also stars Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, Joseph Cotten, Brock Peters, and Chuck Connors.
Soylent Green, no relation to Bonanza star Lorne Greene, is a film with a big spoiler so if you haven't seen it, well, we did warn you.

Nobody knew Robinson was dying. Ed told Heston just before the scene was shot that he was dying of cancer. Charlton and Robinson were good friends and the tears Heston cried where real in the scene. So sad.
What a brilliant way to get even more emotion out of Heston for that scene. Robinson strategically keeping it to himself until the filming of the scene was a gift to us all.
I saw this movie knowing the ending for years, so what surprised me was not the twist but rather the part with women being "furniture". Such a grim concept, and yet so fitting. Great movie, I like to watch it along Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man, makes a nice Charlton Heston sci-fi evening.

Such a brilliant film. I loved how the scoops showed how society literally treats citizens like dirt.
And the spoiler warnings are good. We watched this at a college club meeting once, and my favorite part was one girl who didn't know the twist, and when Heston got to the Soylent plant and she realized what was going on she gasped so loud in horror I couldn't help but smile.
Yah, thoughI found it odd that they bothered feeding everone anyway and having suicide clinics. Like, there is a premium placed on human life since they arent killing people off, and the fact that they recycle dead bodies basicly doesnt seem all that bad given the situation.
Though I guess thats thinking a bit too much and You should more get into the drama if it.
When you watch the movie, pay attention to Saul Roth’s lamentation and self condemnation. He remembered what it was like, and realized that he took no responsibility in making a change. To avoid this future, each one of us needs to take responsibility to see to it, that the world of Soylent Green never arrives.
This movie has one of the best opening montages ever. I recommend the book, its pretty grim and hits kind of close to home now.
If you want a good one on a similar subject but slightly less grim tone, try John Brunner's Stand On Zanzibar.

I'm surprised and thankful that a remake of Soylent Green hasn't been attempted yet.
Shhh...Whatever you do, don't give the Hollywood movie factory any more "funny" ideas than they already have. And by "funny", I mean "regurgitated lazily-written slop".

I always wanted to see that scene re-shot so he's screaming "Soylent Green is people!" and everyone in the crowd just looks at him and shrugs, then some rando comes up and say "Yeah, we know. Everybody knows. Didn't you read the nutritional info on the label? What's next, you going to tell us Red Dye #3 causes cancer?"

Considering the style of acting when Edward G started his career,his performance in this was truly amazing and moving!
I read his biography. Very interesting. As the son of immigrants, he should have been put into a certain Immigrants only class at school but it was full. So he was placed in the "American" class which meant he lost his accent which meant his later film career was a success. A minor thing gave us such a great actor!
In the 1970s we wore natty hats. This film always made me cry, esp..Sol.
I first watched this movie in the 90s on VHS and was fortunate to go into it unspoiled. I remember really enjoying it. Time for a rewatch!
Great movie. When I was a kid this and Tora! Tora! Tora! were two of my favorite movies to watch on TNT. And to think it took over 20 years for me to find out they're from the same director. And if you're wondering how I couldn't know that. I didn't pay much attention to the credits and back in the 90's we didn't have IMDB. Kids these days.

I was a personal driver in L.A. in the 1980s, drove Mr. Joseph Cotten many times. I chatted him up a couple of times about this particular film.

Great film, great video! One of Heston's end of the world movies of the early 70s. I personally thought his The Omega Man (1971) was better but Soylent Green is more famous.
Sol was played by the late, great Edward G Robinson in his final movie role. Also, a movie that takes place in 2022 with some people in the crowd wearing masks is somewhat prophetic.
1973 version of 2022: "Soylent Green is made from people!"
2022 in real life: "Tuesday Tacos are made from chihuahuas!" Or something like that. :D

I LOVE Soylent Green, and no channel ever covers it! I don't know why, because it is classic dystopia, even better than Planet of the Apes (another Heston classic).
This flick was set in 2022 !!!
Soylent Green is one of the Trifecta of early 70s Sci-Fi Masterpieces along with THX-1138 and Silent Running :)
Not a fan of Westworld or The Omega Man myself but if you want to do what most people do and count everything pre-Star Wars as early 70s Sci-Fi then Rollerball and Logan's Run were both pretty good too.
Star Wars is fantasy.

"Soylent Green is people!" makes it sound like Soylent corp has a kickass community outreach.
Ah, Mr Fine! This is one of those Heston Sci-Fi romps that shaped my youth, and which I showed my kids when they were a little older than I was when I first saw it, so it wouldn’t wreck their dreams as it did mine.
The iconic shot of the hand in the air, the weird way Heston extends the word people when he tells his rescuers, “Soylent Green is made out of peoplllllle!” Glued, riveted and bolted to the inside of my skull forever. And what a great ending to Edward G’s illustrious career! With Chuck Connors, Brock Peters and Joseph Cotton, all heavyweights, lending their acting chops to the proceedings, making this an iconic sci-fi classic, up there with Alien, Silent Running, and of course The Apes movies you covered so well.
Now I got that off my chest, I can enjoy your video on the subject. Just so delighted that you picked this of all films!

This is a timeless classic, as most of chuck hestons films are

Its hard to believe that the original book called 'MAKE ROOM MAKE ROOM' by Harry Harrison is even more claustrophobic than the film.
Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson were good friends back to The Ten Commandments and had said they wanted to do a movie together again. Robinson was the first choice to play Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes and even filmed some tests in the ape makeup but had to cancel because he got overheated in it and that was dangerous for his heart condition. The scene in Soylent Green where he goes to the euthanasia center to die was the last he ever filmed, and he died something like a week later before the movie was released.
I was born in 1970 and saw this movie in 1988. I thought the ending was a twist for the people at the time, but after speaking with an older friend of mine at work, he told me that the commercial was so obviously done that you knew what the twist was long before you even sat your ass in the theater. 😂
I appreciate your spoiler warning. I employ it myself, because, as you said, a new generation is just coming to these movies and I'd like to give them the same chance to enjoy them as I've had. I think people who don't employ spoiler warnings are either not consciously thinking about it or just really want to share the spoiler. I've lost count of how many people want to talk to me about things in a movie that just came out, but I have not yet seen.
My introduction to this movie was from an old SNL sketch in the 90s about less than stellar sequels such as Soylent White, Soylent Cow Patties, and Soylent Green II

I saw this in the early 80's. I had managed to avoid any spoilers, so got the full surprise of the ending.

Loves me some late-60s/early-70s dystopian science fiction, and this movie is iconic, but if you can't see the twist ending coming by the end of act 2, then you haven't been paying attention.

Another masterpiece
I thought this film was perfectly fine. The part I don't get is, if there isn't enough food, eat disguised cadavers. makes sense to me. Tabasco sauce makes everything OK.
I still haven't seen the movie but there is a more recent film that had a similar ending. I won't spoil which movie but when it was revealed was a very devastating moment.
7:35 I was born in 1972 same year Atari released arcade PONG. In 76 my mother got me Atari Super Pong my very first home video game witch to this day I still have it and yes its still works.

I love that Brock Peters (DS9's Joseph Sisko) and Celia Lovsky (TOS's T'Pau) were in it. I'm so glad that Star Trek had a hopeful outlook for humanity's future. A shining light amidst all the dystopia!
I think Brock Peters played a star fleet admiral in the undiscovered country also. I can't remember, but im sure he was in the voyage home aswell.
@@mrmeerkat1096 I'm not certain about ST4, but you're right about ST6. I didn't think about that at first because he's far better known for playing Ben Sisko's dad. Ben, Jake and Joseph Sisko are my favourite Trek family, with Kasidy Yates as a perfect late addition! 😁

There was a great SNL sketch in the '90 with Phil Hartman playing the Heston role doing alternate versions of the movie. They also had a clip from the sequel, Soylent Green 2. "Soylent Green is still people! It's still people! They said they changed the recipe but they didn't!". As with most classic SNL sketches it's tough to find online, but if you can find it I highly recommend.
I remember that sketch. Then the next sequel was Soylent White, a paper replacement product...made out of people!

Maybe Hollywood should do a remake of this. However, a better upgrade would be plastic, gasoline and etc... is made of....
At least this soy product wouldn't lower your T levels.
Neither does the soy we have today. You first have to have a certain gene which only a few have, then you have to eat a lot of it all the time to have a small effect. Lack of sleep, too much ejaculation, consumption of diary products, alcohol consumption, stress, etc., can all lower your T-levels just as much.
@@YeeLeeHaw Considering how much soy in in various products we eat everyday, that builds up. Much of the food labels I read say soy emulsifier, soybean oil or soy something on it.
@@MegaMagicdog I don't think those contain the plant estrogen in any large enough quantities, if at all, but if that's the case that they contain the same amount as the source, that's still not near enough. But if you're still worried, the amount of testosterone that gets lowered when everything aligns, is still just a few percent and will probably not even be noticed as our levels are constantly going up and down for many reasons. It's more important to keep the things I mentioned in check, and if you're still not sure, just test your levels.

While I don’t think the overpopulation was completely spot on I do see major cities like NYC having people flock there in the wake of environmental disaster in hopes of finding work or a general place that they might be able to survive in. With the world set up so that farming (aside from plankton collection) is such a rarity that would mean that all the land and farming/ranching communities must have died out in some fashion. If something like the dust bowl occurred but so massive and grand that more and more people either got out of dodge while they still could or ended up naively trying to save their livelihood only to most likely die in the process you would end up with a potential rush on metropolitan areas as they’d have more infrastructure by comparison to rural communities. Then as this continues to occur you have overpopulation in tight spots like the cities, people giving up on their farms and livestock all snowballing in a fantastically grim way.
What they are doing today. Food is not natural. Skies are not natural. Forcing farmers out!

I was ten years old in 1973 and I remember seeing this at a Texas drive in with my parents. It really messed with my head back then, and it still does to some extent, for good reason. Despite the over the top acting, and total lack of modern technology such as cell phones or internet, the story is still prophetic. A an overheated and overcrowded world with quickly diminishing resources forcing societies to make drastic fateful decisions... check. Yeah, we're still screwed.
I was glad to see Dathan redeem himself, but to see Moses fall so far was hard to watch. A worthwhile story, but definitely not my favorite part of the Bible. 4/10

Yup, saw it in the theater when I was nine. I had no business seeing it, but the scoops looked cool. I was a little quiet on the way home.
