Awww, no more food for Peppermint? I’m amazed she decided to stay longer than any other juvenile. My hawk Molly’s offspring left back in July! The last one left the area just a couple weeks after the other. I used to use chicken hearts and gizzards for my hawks, but I’ve been getting cheap and spending only $5 on 4 lbs of chicken legs. Breaking up those legs is never easy, but being cheap never pays off! It’s not the healthiest thing to give to the hawks because white meat is pretty much a filler food. I’m glad you chose quality over quantity here!
By the way it’s been years since I’ve seen Thelma get that close to you! This hawk is the most tolerant I’ve seen yet. The reason for that is this hawk is barely hunting on her own and Titan has moved on so that he can forget about the juvenile.
But I promise to you that Peppermint will hunt no matter how little or how much food you give her! She always changes her hunting spots from time to time just like with all hawks. She instinctively knows that she needs to keep the element of surprise so that the prey doesn’t escape knowing there’s a hawk around. I’m glad she’s not a stubborn one. A full hawk doesn’t want me as a friend, which is why I deliberately keep a hawk as hungry as possible. I’ll create my own obstacle course by placing the food is between something so that the hawk has to maneuver itself and fold up its wings to get to it. But that trick only works for a hawk that makes calls at me because then I know for sure it’s hungry. Sometimes it only takes 1 meal per swoop to change a hawk’s attitude! And I don’t like hawks that give me “the attitude” because then the hawk gets more skittish and flies further from me for a meal. And believe me, you don’t want that to happen with Peppermint!

@@jthejh we cannot locate Thelma. Have searched and spoke to the people that live below the nest. They haven’t seen her either. Very concerned.
