It took a lot of liberties with Edgar Rice Burroughs' original story, but it was a good adaptation.

Written in 1912 and now in public domain along with all the series. So anybody can take a crack at making it better/ more in line with the book anytime and then follow the serie for 11 more books.
For those that know, this is an adaptation of the earliest sci-fi/fantasy stories from the 1900s, and the character had many adventures in later books . Others might be interested in finding out what happens to John and Deja by reading a book or listening to audiobooks.
I watched this on DVD not in theaters.
True, there were very few commercials promoting this movie in 2012. Disney had many movies out that year, including The Avengers. This was a bigger launch that finally gathered Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor who all had solo movies up until this point. This was the MCU, where you could market toys, games, costumes etc. (Yes the Edward Norton version of Hulk is officially MCU it had the end credit teaser of Tony Stark talking to the General.)
Other movies that came out that year include Hunger Games, Twilight part 2, Jack Reacher, The Bourne Legacy, The Hobbit, Wrath of the Titans, Battleship (also with Taylor Kitsch), Lincoln, The Life of Pi, Silver Lining Playbook, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looper, Skyfall, Dredd, Red Dawn, Total Recall, Cloud Atlas, Magic Mike, Men in Black 3, Expendables 2, Wreck it Ralph, Brave, The Lorax, The Amazing Spiderman, The Dark Knight Rises, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, Ted, Pitch Perfect, and of course an apocalyptic movie called 2012 (John Cusack, so inspired because it was the last recorded year in the Mayan calendar).
Yes, John Carter was an enjoyable movie. But from all the movies I listed that were in theaters that year, I doubt it is anybody's top 5 or even top 10 must see in theaters for $10/ticket.
Nevermind the "critics", if you have $50-$100 to buy movie tickets, would you spend it on this movie or Batman, Spiderman, the Avengers, James Bond and Stallone/all the 80s action guys?

The reason why it got poor reception is because some of us read the books. The Barsoom series is one of my favorites of all time. They butchered the storylines and tried to make it commercially marketable. The feminist idealism perverted the original story. The princess does not go out into the battlefield and kick some hiney.

The films butchered the story of the books and all its interpretations, and yet people glaze them to this day as fantastic adaptations and films that, accounting for inflation, each made almost $2B at the box-office. So clearly book inaccuracy isn't what's keeping people from liking a film.
For those asking, it's called 'John Carter' from 2012. 😉👍 It's OK, but didn't do well enough to start the franchise they had hoped it would. Based on a comic book if I remember correctly.
Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs - one of the Barroom Series. He wrote the Tarzan series also.

Good movie based on a book written a long time ago in 1917, serialized as “A Princess of Mars”. The series is really good and an amazing Sci-Fi story written so long ago. References of Technology not invented yet and an accurate understanding of Mars Gravity incorporated into the story is astounding.
Worth listening to audiobooks.

This movie was so underrated. What a travesty that such a good movie with a potential blockbuster franchise was stopped cold by non-existent advertising.
This was the greatest movie with the worst ending of all time. There is no way he would have thrown away that amulet knowing how important it was.
at 8:23 when they had to leave Woola behind was so sad ): they didnt talk about him at all really but that was super sad Woola coming to the edge of the water watching them leave . So glad they reunited with him after they were being chased!!!

This got a lot of slagging off from the critics etc, flopped at the box office, but I enjoyed it, some good, well known supporting actors. I don't care what anyone says. I'd love to see the sequel.
Hilariously, one of the few Hollywood films that have depicted Mars with less gravity than Earth's. Though, here it's obviously to the extreme. It's a shame this movie didn't do well, and frankly, I was on the fence about it when I saw it (in 3D IMAX). That all being said, it's an entertaining and strange film from a huge studio, and I tend to applaud those types of attempts. Was it Passengers (2016) bad? Absolutely not. 🌵👽
If you dont mind me asking, how you come to the conclusion of comparing romcom passengers movie (okay my bad its a space travel romcom movie) but why you are putting that in the same genre of this speghatti time-travel action sci-flick of a movie, ( is this movie entertaining well everything is )
@@GohersWay What I meant was that both films had amazing visuals and intriguing concepts, but John Carter had a much better story that had a fulfilling ending. I wish more films looked like Passengers or Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and had fascinating concepts, while also retaining a good story. Sadly, those are hard to come by, so studios are more likely to make the big box movies with known franchises, because it's a safe investment.
If you liked this you should read the book, much more complete.

Sounds like a good movie. From what the comments are saying it was and probably still is somewhat hated on. Probably because the faces of the aliens are kinda goofy. It probably will gain a good following in later years like the whole soulsborne series did.

The lead protagonist is a very relatable guy. He carries the movie well and you start to get a kind of attachment to him. By the end you really want him to win and have a peaceful life. Got Pale Rider vibes at parts. The female lead is excellent as well. She a warrior but still emotional and feminine which makes her even more endearing. The two together have great chemistry and they truly belong with each other. The antagonists seem a bit weak. They are said to be powerful but I never got that feeling. It didn't really effect me when they got clipped. All in all, I liked it. My favorite is the speedy dog like creature. I'd like a companion like that too.
There was campy bits in this movie but over all I really liked it. I read the book afterwards and the book is better in some places and not so much in others. Over all the movie as I said was really good.

This is one of those strange stories that tries to frame the Confederates as freedom fighters, and the northern army as cold-blooded oppressors.

I have seen the film and can say that it is absolutely what you never need. Even films like: My Little Pony or Barbie is Princess are more sensible than this film.
