I'm a retired installer . I went on my first carpet job with my dad when I was 11 yrs old. I laid my last job at 72 yrs of age. I've seen it all. Finally a video where the guy got it right. I'd work with him any day.
Here's what he did wrong he flipped his blade and cut both sides ryt tight up against the other row of fiber , creating each row of fiber to be tight pushed up against each other , now with that carpet he's installing it really does not matter , if u were to do that to a heavy thick lite color plush carpet u would see a fine line where the rows of fiber are pressed together , now spread open the fibers and look at the space between each row this should be the same but by cutting both ends up against each other causes the space to be tight together , tighter together does not mean better ,if he did not flip the blade he would have had an equal amounts of space throughout the carpet , a little difficult to explain ,picture a carpet with a large space between each row let's just say a very large space ,1/2 " just to say ,now cut against the row and cut against the other row now u have the rows together with no space causing a line of the rows , u want to keep an equal space between each row , when cutting by running rows u keep the blade on the same side when u cut each side , perfect example when someone cuts a tight heavy light color carpet and flips the blade you see a fine line and wonder why , thinking my seam is tight as can be ,well it's to tight ,
Finally a fellow installer who knows how to properly cut a seam edge! Man that was refreshing! Lol watching these other guys straight edging makes me itch!

I had old installer tell me about the number 15 knitting needle I used to use an ink pen too, til it popped doing a seam in white carpet lol, good job tho I gotta look into that seam vac !

FloorsbySouthernboys I don't know if you know about a thing called a "seam weight" I have one and it basically weighs the seam down to make it flat. It does work but you still have to wait for the seam to cool.
sausage man Yeah that’s what I used for years it was a piece of iron with Teflon on the bottom with holes in it I had one of those for years until I came across the seamer Down now
If you're an old timer like me, you just follow the row from the back with a knife..I learned using an old hawkbill crane knife. I use a loop pile cutter for loop pile sometimes, but always on unitary or most shaw products, I just follow the row by hand. Some call it free hand. I started in 78
Very nice demonstration of how to use an old school iron and the seamer down now tool. I have one as well since it first came out and have only used it a handful of times. You should stop using your old iron and start using the Kool Glyde iron. It makes way better seams and is alot faster!
Can you tell me if I want to use Roberts double sided carpet tape for my brand new carpet it will work same as when you use hot iron , please let me know
Viki VVV yeah I just used my ink pen two separate the rows, I used a Orcon row cutter to cut my seam, the seam iron that I used is an orcon Kool top, the seam tape I used is Powerhold 250 and for my seam weight I used the seamer down now
22 years of installation experience here. Nice job fellas. Quality carpet should be row cut for seams. Lots of lower quality pieces have been giving me trouble lately.
Higher quality pieces been giving me a lil trouble lately. .. low quality... I can put a 12 x 17.6 in 13 .6x 16 room with 7 butt seems and make it look flawless

Wish this guy did the install in our home. A couple of hacks did it. Uneven cuts, backing overlapping backing, yarns in between the butted up seam backing. Every doorway seam shows. and I mean every doorway -into bedrooms! Did I mention a few small gaps in some seams. They redid area, but no better .........

Hi, after the installation of Carpet tiles (nylon - solid color) lines are visible between some of the tiles. is it normal or it is to do with carpet tile quality? can anyone please help me with this?
So I have a question.. I have the same style carpet you are installing, I attempted to use my pen in the same manner but never got the line as you did. What other way is there to part that prior to cutting?
Epic Moments Channel If you just simply push and let it lead it’s on the way through the row. It will go, what causes problems is when the individual tries to make it go straight, simply set the pin in between the fibers and push and let it lead itself
make sure that its not metal also. metal pulls the heat and moisture out too fast ..giving u a bad seam sometimes.. most tools boxes have metal trays.. orcon toolbox for flooring has nylon on the bottom of there tray for this exact reason. ideally for a seam weight u want nylon or plastic of some type ..

I'm not having trouble separating or following the rows so much. I'm having trouble with the rows not being straight on the cheaper pieces. So then I'm left with little choice but to stay nail with a power stretcher to match the pieces with crooked rows. This can be problematic on concrete subfloors and just a general pain in the butt. So, I often just resort to straight edging and using the spiked tractor. But, it does create the problems you mentioned. Any suggestions would be well received.
Are you still happy with the seamer down ? Do you use it on every seam ? It sounds pretty loud has any customers complained about the noise ? Have you noticed a difference with your Seams? Thanks.
CarpetMan yes I'm still absolutely thrilled with my seamer down now and yes I do use it on every single scene I make, it is just a little bit loud it's actually the top to a small shop vac so that's how loud it is I've never had a complaint from the customers about it , yes there is a difference in my seams I never have to worry about them pulling apart if the roads are crooked when I adjust it it's going to be held tight together I will never push a gap in it trying to align it, it is extremely awesome I'm stretching commercial perfect tight flat seams every time I we'll never be without the same er down now again I love it thanks for your comment and I hope this was helpful
Thanks for the videos. I'm a diy looking to stretch a large bedroom carpet. It's an older carpet with several large ripples. The adjoined hallway carpet has a ripple and I thought of stretching the hallway ripple out first toward the bedroom, relief cut in the the B.R. doorway and proceed with stretching the B.R. I am guessing that I will need to cut the carpet in the doorway and seam later. My question is, do you have to use a row cutter or will a regular carpet knife work okay? Secondly, is a carpet wall trimmer essential or can a regular carpet knife work okay when trimming against walls?
ranmangolf yes if you are a DIY person and you don’t do it on a regular basis I would like you said just use a carpet knife and after you stretch both hallway and the bedroom to the doorway just straight edge your cut and put it back together and no carpet trimmer is not a necessity it’s a luxury, you can just use your carpet Knife to trim around the walls will be just fine

He's good installer but I still prefer too strait edge in regular jute back carpet just have to keep your blade nice and strait and shorten up blade I've been doin it for 30 years never have complaints of bad seam the real knack of a good seam is know in how to put the seam together with your hands not to gap it or overlap it that's more important than cuttin it although cuttin it correct is very important too
42 yrs. never heard of a seamer down. Row running is best until you get carpet with skewed rows. DIY’ers also need to know that row running doesn’t apply to end seams. Obviously, that is why you never start a job without a straight edge. I have never seen one of these videos address end seams, always just the simple side seams.

You did a great job however manufacturers (all carpet manufacturers) require a seam sealed edge on both residential and commercial carpets. This seam would fail inspection as it does not have a latex or hot glue protected seam edge.
Nathanael Lucas thank you for your concern I kind of use my own judgment on if I should or should not use sealer I know all the manufacturers recommend it for all carpets ,if the carpet Edge after being cut is brittle like nap may fall out then I will use it the seam sealer I've only had to have an inspector come out and look at one of my seams in 20 plus years of carpet laying and that was because of Role Crush from the manufacturer and that seam was not sealed and it never caused any issue whatsoever even by the inspector, but again I appreciate your concern and thank you for commenting
99% of installers are not latexing there stretch seams to be honest just not as critical as sealing a glue down edge to stop fibers from fraying. the tape usually does good enough job holding fibers in place
No roller no seem finder a blade f1, heatbond iron,tape, fingers and eyesight. Half the time half the effort but years of training and practice. But nice one decent join there missing seal for it but back of a wardrobe. Post a join in a velvet piled carpet
What can you use as a hot iron steamer if you have none? Can I melt the tape in the microwave & placed under the rugs? I understand about the weight, got a lot of items around the house to add weight onto the rug.
angelisone the tape will cool off too fast for you to try to use the microwave, you can always rent a seaming iron from Home Depot and should you choose not to do that place your tape under each piece of carpet just as it would go together and use a Hot Melt gun to apply glue to the tape just a little bit at a time maybe 3 or 4 inch at a time
FloorsbySouthernboys, thank you for the suggestion on using a Hot Melt Glue Gun, which I have with a dozen glue sticks. I just need to do the door way. And good tips on stretching the rug from doorway to down the hallway, upstairs (3 meters) if one doesn't a carpet kicker/is a woman?
FloorsbySouternboys, being a female with a hip replacement doesn't allow me to use the carpet kicker to straighten out the wavy rug. What else can I use to stretch the rug, beside the kicker?
angelisone the only thing I would know to tell you is to rent a power stretcher which is not difficult to use at all so that would probably be your best bet

Try with white or light colors and tide streams and you'll see. Not all carpets and colors can do same quality seam. Not all seaming tapes and iron and heat can work on the backing of the carpet.
Easy to find the row when the carpet is new. Try finding the row in a door way when the carpet is 5 years old and all matted down by foot traffic. Not so easy.
We all know it doesnt come from the factory clean edge like that 😆 and as for the rows.....they are always so far out its almost impossible to join. I know its only in the wardrobes and small joins to demonstrate, but i know you wouldn't attempt to cut the join that way in a full room with that sort of carpet 😆🍻
If we are going to explain in details on how to make a seam invisible, he forgot to mention that carpet has direction. Which tells you which way to move the seam iron. That will have a major impact on the look of the seam if not done properly. Other than that good video.
It might be just where I live. It's required for every seam. For what ever reason, if there is an issue with the seam either by manufacturer or installer error, an inspector would come in with a black light and if the doesn't see any sealer, we've just bought all of the carpet.
ephram brown I do actually think that is nationwide but in the 26 years of my career I have only had one issue with seams and it was a manufacture defect and they did not black light test it and the manufacture did cover it please don’t think I’m trying to be braggadocio‘s or anything like that sometimes it just takes a hard lesson for someone to learn and I just have not experience that lesson yet but I do believe it is nationwide I guess I’ve just been lucky enough to have not had any issues

I guess a toilet tank lid won't do anymore, now that they have coolers.. I've got some 60 foot glue down seams coming up next week if you're not busy come on by.. LOL
Ok so not the best technique. Seaming against the grain is never a good idea. Also a nap roller is for berber carpet. Been doing this 40 plus years and have never had the need for that particular tool. If you have to try and hide your seam by rolling it with a nap roller, it's time to let someone teach you how to properly do a seam.
All carpet seams need to be rolled in order to push the thermal plastic into the backing of the carpet. It is not to hide the same. It is to make sure the thermoplastic is in the pics of the backing for a good bond.
Again no. That's what they make fingers for. A nice firm push down into the glue provides this. When you roll hot fibers it moves them all around. The fiber is heat set and you're undoing it. The hot glue on the tape is only pliable for a short period of time so your delay in doing it proves my point. Setting your iron on 2 -2 1/2 is also recommended. Sorry but 40 plus years of doing it correctly can't be undone with a tool that is indeed designed specifically for looped carpet. Again not trying to argue just telling you what I've do and what I have taught. And I have never had a seam come undone. Just saying give it a try and let me know what you think. I do believe you will be happier with your seams at the end of the day.@@FloorsbySouthernboys
its called row cutting , he should have used the same blade side to cut the other side the same way that way the pick distance between the rows stays the same. by switching blade sides you now lost the pick distance between the seam and the fibers are to tight now.. ( no seam sealer again! you bought the job! ) show me the seam between the fibers? that 500 dollar seam cooler pulls the glue into the backing, yea right! , the glue is already set once you put the carpet backing in it and if you iron is set right you don' even need a roller! . that seam is 2 ft and in the back of the closet ,the helper should be doing that seam! show me a 25 ft main seam with a 60 oz berber or pattern or better ! AXMINISTER !! been doing this job 32 yrs and run circles around today's installers at 54 yrs old by myself . amer eagle/ learn how to spell ! what is a profecional ? sounds like a place to drop a duece .

I do not flip blades on any carpet nowadays this was before I learned not to do that

Uneven cuts, backing overlapping backing, yarns in between the butted up seam backing.
Every doorway seam shows. and I mean every doorway -into bedrooms!
Did I mention a few small gaps in some seams.
They redid area, but no better .........

Epic Moments Channel If you just simply push and let it lead it’s on the way through the row. It will go, what causes problems is when the individual tries to make it go straight, simply set the pin in between the fibers and push and let it lead itself
I've always been told separate tows down with the grain cut against use blade side you want trimmed if not it can leave to much backing?😎🏁👍

make sure that its not metal also. metal pulls the heat and moisture out too fast ..giving u a bad seam sometimes.. most tools boxes have metal trays.. orcon toolbox for flooring has nylon on the bottom of there tray for this exact reason. ideally for a seam weight u want nylon or plastic of some type ..

I'm not having trouble separating or following the rows so much. I'm having trouble with the rows not being straight on the cheaper pieces. So then I'm left with little choice but to stay nail with a power stretcher to match the pieces with crooked rows. This can be problematic on concrete subfloors and just a general pain in the butt. So, I often just resort to straight edging and using the spiked tractor. But, it does create the problems you mentioned.
Any suggestions would be well received.

CarpetMan yes I'm still absolutely thrilled with my seamer down now and yes I do use it on every single scene I make, it is just a little bit loud it's actually the top to a small shop vac so that's how loud it is I've never had a complaint from the customers about it , yes there is a difference in my seams I never have to worry about them pulling apart if the roads are crooked when I adjust it it's going to be held tight together I will never push a gap in it trying to align it, it is extremely awesome I'm stretching commercial perfect tight flat seams every time I we'll never be without the same er down now again I love it thanks for your comment and I hope this was helpful

Thanks for the videos. I'm a diy looking to stretch a large bedroom carpet. It's an older carpet with several large ripples. The adjoined hallway carpet has a ripple and I thought of stretching the hallway ripple out first toward the bedroom, relief cut in the the B.R. doorway and proceed with stretching the B.R. I am guessing that I will need to cut the carpet in the doorway and seam later. My question is, do you have to use a row cutter or will a regular carpet knife work okay? Secondly, is a carpet wall trimmer essential or can a regular carpet knife work okay when trimming against walls?
ranmangolf yes if you are a DIY person and you don’t do it on a regular basis I would like you said just use a carpet knife and after you stretch both hallway and the bedroom to the doorway just straight edge your cut and put it back together and no carpet trimmer is not a necessity it’s a luxury, you can just use your carpet Knife to trim around the walls will be just fine

He's good installer but I still prefer too strait edge in regular jute back carpet just have to keep your blade nice and strait and shorten up blade I've been doin it for 30 years never have complaints of bad seam the real knack of a good seam is know in how to put the seam together with your hands not to gap it or overlap it that's more important than cuttin it although cuttin it correct is very important too

42 yrs. never heard of a seamer down. Row running is best until you get carpet with skewed rows. DIY’ers also need to know that row running doesn’t apply to end seams. Obviously, that is why you never start a job without a straight edge. I have never seen one of these videos address end seams, always just the simple side seams.

You did a great job however manufacturers (all carpet manufacturers) require a seam sealed edge on both residential and commercial carpets. This seam would fail inspection as it does not have a latex or hot glue protected seam edge.
Nathanael Lucas thank you for your concern I kind of use my own judgment on if I should or should not use sealer I know all the manufacturers recommend it for all carpets ,if the carpet Edge after being cut is brittle like nap may fall out then I will use it the seam sealer I've only had to have an inspector come out and look at one of my seams in 20 plus years of carpet laying and that was because of Role Crush from the manufacturer and that seam was not sealed and it never caused any issue whatsoever even by the inspector, but again I appreciate your concern and thank you for commenting
99% of installers are not latexing there stretch seams to be honest just not as critical as sealing a glue down edge to stop fibers from fraying. the tape usually does good enough job holding fibers in place

It's called reverse tension as soon you stretch the carpet you put tension on the join that is why you get peaking on the joins

angelisone the tape will cool off too fast for you to try to use the microwave, you can always rent a seaming iron from Home Depot and should you choose not to do that place your tape under each piece of carpet just as it would go together and use a Hot Melt gun to apply glue to the tape just a little bit at a time maybe 3 or 4 inch at a time

FloorsbySouternboys, being a female with a hip replacement doesn't allow me to use the carpet kicker to straighten out the wavy rug. What else can I use to stretch the rug, beside the kicker?
angelisone the only thing I would know to tell you is to rent a power stretcher which is not difficult to use at all so that would probably be your best bet

Try with white or light colors and tide streams and you'll see. Not all carpets and colors can do same quality seam. Not all seaming tapes and iron and heat can work on the backing of the carpet.

Easy to find the row when the carpet is new. Try finding the row in a door way when the carpet is 5 years old and all matted down by foot traffic. Not so easy.

We all know it doesnt come from the factory clean edge like that 😆 and as for the rows.....they are always so far out its almost impossible to join. I know its only in the wardrobes and small joins to demonstrate, but i know you wouldn't attempt to cut the join that way in a full room with that sort of carpet 😆🍻

Row cutting is good however not all carpets will Row. And not all carpet rows are straight
You are correct, not all rows are straight but almost all Carpet Will row cut
If we are going to explain in details on how to make a seam invisible, he forgot to mention that carpet has direction. Which tells you which way to move the seam iron. That will have a major impact on the look of the seam if not done properly. Other than that good video.

It might be just where I live. It's required for every seam. For what ever reason, if there is an issue with the seam either by manufacturer or installer error, an inspector would come in with a black light and if the doesn't see any sealer, we've just bought all of the carpet.
ephram brown I do actually think that is nationwide but in the 26 years of my career I have only had one issue with seams and it was a manufacture defect and they did not black light test it and the manufacture did cover it please don’t think I’m trying to be braggadocio‘s or anything like that sometimes it just takes a hard lesson for someone to learn and I just have not experience that lesson yet but I do believe it is nationwide I guess I’ve just been lucky enough to have not had any issues

Ok so not the best technique. Seaming against the grain is never a good idea. Also a nap roller is for berber carpet. Been doing this 40 plus years and have never had the need for that particular tool. If you have to try and hide your seam by rolling it with a nap roller, it's time to let someone teach you how to properly do a seam.
All carpet seams need to be rolled in order to push the thermal plastic into the backing of the carpet. It is not to hide the same. It is to make sure the thermoplastic is in the pics of the backing for a good bond.
Again no. That's what they make fingers for. A nice firm push down into the glue provides this. When you roll hot fibers it moves them all around. The fiber is heat set and you're undoing it. The hot glue on the tape is only pliable for a short period of time so your delay in doing it proves my point. Setting your iron on 2 -2 1/2 is also recommended. Sorry but 40 plus years of doing it correctly can't be undone with a tool that is indeed designed specifically for looped carpet. Again not trying to argue just telling you what I've do and what I have taught. And I have never had a seam come undone. Just saying give it a try and let me know what you think. I do believe you will be happier with your seams at the end of the day.@@FloorsbySouthernboys

its called row cutting , he should have used the same blade side to cut the other side the same way that way the pick distance between the rows stays the same. by switching blade sides you now lost the pick distance between the seam and the fibers are to tight now.. ( no seam sealer again! you bought the job! ) show me the seam between the fibers? that 500 dollar seam cooler pulls the glue into the backing, yea right! , the glue is already set once you put the carpet backing in it and if you iron is set right you don' even need a roller! . that seam is 2 ft and in the back of the closet ,the helper should be doing that seam! show me a 25 ft main seam with a 60 oz berber or pattern or better ! AXMINISTER !! been doing this job 32 yrs and run circles around today's installers at 54 yrs old by myself . amer eagle/ learn how to spell ! what is a profecional ? sounds like a place to drop a duece .
