  • I bought a used and abused Solo Canoe and gave it some much needed care. Getting it ready to take a trip with it, so I had to do a quick paddle test as I've never paddled a Solo Canoe before! LOL!

I had bought a new Prism about 20 years ago. A bent shaft paddle is best , with long powerful j strokes. Don't go thrashing around as you are attempting. Wenny created this canoe from a racing hull for rec use. I typically paddle mine around a 100 acre lake in 20 minutes work outs (around the shoreline). It is a beautiful canoe to learn to paddle , but here is a few suggestions. Your foot rest is way to close to your body , your legs should be at 70% ankle..... The seat should be at middle , so working wind or waves you shift your seat position back or forward. Its trackability is unreal once you master paddling this canoe.

also, use nylon rope to tie it down, learn the slip knot truckers hitch...its stronger than straps, faster than straps, and wont have a metal ratchet scrapping the canoe.

With time you will learn to paddle the boat wind or not

I've been in some real windy crappy weather since then and have gotten more used to the canoe. Thanks Brian!

You’d probably had a very different experience edging the boat and kneeling on a thwart. You’ll be able to do much more than you are doing in this video and enjoy the boat more.

LOL! Sorry have to laugh, as this was my first time ever paddling this type of canoe...I'd be swimming if I tried edging! Thanks for the tip though and thanks for checking the video out Lewis!

This is a long range speed machine that can probably be paddled very well in wind. Looks like it need's to be weighted down some. As you experienced it will not be quick to swing it around on a narrow water in wind. Sliding your gear forwards or backwards and/or adjusting your seat is how you balance this in a side wind. If you got wind coming at you from the right and the boat wants to turn left it's because your front is light. Think about it. Move more weight forward and it will point the nose more to the wind, or move it further back to point it more with the wind. You can fine tune this so that your canoe wants to stay at a certain angle to the wind and then you can go straight over long distances. If it's windy when I'm solo padling and I only have a light day pack with me I usually take a couple of rocks on board and put them in the front. I do this so I don't have to sit so centered. Sitting just a little bit further back to have some more tracking capabilities in wind works well and then if I need to swing it around I just get on my knees because then I will be in the center.

I've done a few trips with it now and found I don't like the gear up front, rides better with the gear in the rear. Been in some pretty big winds and learning to handle it better. Thanks!

Try a shorter paddle… 54 inch long. That paddle looks too long for the boat/seating position

I have a Wenonah Prism. I have paddled it in light wind, while fishing, it tracks straight and is stable. I do find it narrow and wish it had a traditional bench seat, not the molded fiberglass. It is very light though.

Thanks Jerry! Ya I'm not a fan of the tractor seat either and I'm a big guy so rather top heavy in this canoe... few pucker moments in that canoe LOL!

Yes, for sure! Taken it for a couple of trips now and very happy with it, although each time it's a learning process! Thanks for watching Mike!

    Thanks for the great video!
I noticed you didn't adjust the seating position. If your weight is up front, the wind won't turn you as much and if it's choppy, go to the back more so the front can ride up over the waves better.
You were also paddling in much the same way with the single blade as the double blade. If you only use forward and back strokes with the single blade, It's going to be pretty hard to maneuver.
I hope you enjoy your new boat, it looks great!

Thanks! There's only so much I can do with a paddle, have a messed up shoulder. I am learning about the weight distribution though. Thanks for the pointers!

un strap the paddle from you, push the water rings out farther, and maybe a longer double paddle as well..no water will get in the boat.

My favorite Wenonah canoe is an 18' Jensen. It is a racing hull, but I use it for week long trips on big lakes. Very fast.

Nice! We also have a Souris River Quetico 17' but I've never taken it on a trip as I prefer to paddle in a solo canoe.

Nice! My canoe probably weighs 3x of that one. It's a big old barge, but good for hauling all the gear on a long trip.

If you're not doing a million portages, that's the way to go, great for big lakes! Of course, I'm getting fat and old, so I need all the advantage I can get! LOL! Thanks for watching Q!

Thanks Man! Don't know how much I'll get to enjoy it this year but I'm hoping a few times anyway! Ya, wood ones do look very nice when done up but a weeee too heavy for what I do! ;-) Thanks for watching!

Ha ha, I have a grumman too, old, love it, one of the rivets is leaking, put some marine goop in it, thing is a tank, love how I can beach it without worrying about damaging it, rivet leaking isn't from beaching.
