      Same here. I always heard it calling at night on the farm where I grew up. That and the howling of the jackals.

    I grew up in a small town near the west coast called Hopefield. There was an old grass roof building across the street from my house where barn owls would nest. If I hadn't grown up with that eerie screeching sound, I would probably have been scared to death if I heard it

    Used this vid to ID a bird somewhere in the garden. Fiery-necked nightjar. Quite amazing at how identical 2 obviously different birds of the same species sound. Timing, pitch, all spot on. Wild.

    I can't thank you enough for this wonderful video. We live in a very rural part of Cape Town near Somerset West, and have tons of interesting bird species. Lots of hawks, eagles and owls. But there was this one distinctive call that I couldn't identify, and it turns out it was the fiery-necked nightjar! I've never seen that bird before, but we hear it every now and again at dusk. Thank you! Finally my information itch has been scratched 😂

    • @lynetterudman
      @lynetterudman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad that my video helped you find the bird you have been hearing. The Fiery-necked Nightjar call is so beautiful. They can be altitudinal migrants, so that could explain why you hear them at certain times of the year. I think they move down the the warmer coastal areas in about April/May.

      Spotted Eagle-owls are actually very special birds, if you get to study them. I know there are still cultures that think they bring death but I've had them on my roof for decades and no one has died. To me they are just beautiful birds and I'm privileged to have them visit now and again.

    Thanks Lynette, been struggling with the Barred and Pearl spotted owlets. A question - I was told the pearl spotted would be more diurnal and if i heard the call at night it was possibly the barred owlet, would you be able to shed any light on that

    • @lynetterudman
      @lynetterudman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I think that is a generalisation. I'm sure Pearl-spotted would call at night too. Their calls are very similar. Pearl-spotted has a more high-pitched call and the Barred Owlet a lower and slightly slower call.
