From the master.....Herbie Hancock said of her vocals, "there's so much jazz in the notes and phrases that she picks. She was singing the ninths, the elevenths of the chords...I mean some of the things sound like choices that Miles would have made." For damn sure indeed.....

Alrighty Mr Michael Palmisano, here’s the deal:
Great channel and enthusiasm and content. As a musician who played in multiple bands (jazz, country, rock, bluegrass - you name it) with relative success but no big break, and being a guitar player who’s played since I was 6 - I got burnt out 2 years ago and just sort of stopped playing.
I’m 30 now, and barely picked up my guitar over the past 2 years except when I’d feel guilty for not playing every few months, and play for 5 min or so. I had hit a wall/ceiling, just plain burnt out.
But finding your channel, I’ve been *learning* things again. Even if it’s just giving words/terms to techniques I’m already familiar with, it’s still filling in more pieces to the ever expansive puzzle that is music. I’ll see you say something about thirds/inverted chords or whatever it is and I’ll say “oh yeah, that, I know that” - and then pick up the guitar to find myself not putting it down for an hour.
Your wonder for music and tasteful guitar playing has reignited my playing. It’s like getting back in touch with an old friend. I appreciate it, your work, and the channel. Thank ya sir
Edit- the main drawing point for me, is seeing the way your head will bob and move and your face react to certain changes in the chords/melody in the exact same way music affects me. That told me from the first video I saw that “this guy knows what’s up”

He got me playing again too man. I get it. It wasn't the music for me. Instead, it was the treacherous people and the bars. I grew to despise bars and clubs. Stayed out of them for nearly 15 years. Glad you found the passion again. It's good for the soul. Play for yourself and you will always be happy!

I don't even play guitar (more classical piano and some traditional instruments and styles) but I really appreciate his love of what makes music powerful and compelling. Sometimes we get lost in technique and forget the whole point of things. Go ahead and sing in the shower and find a reverie on a cold autumn night that soothes your own soul. Music is a gift but the sharing part comes from the self-centered part of experiencing it within.

On this particular song, the intention is unmistakeable. The intimacy of the performance makes the ambiguity of the melody really shine too. Much like life, some of the best musical moments are the ones that happen in the grey area between keys.

What a pleasant surprise it was finding this video! I have followed Lisa career for a decade - from a time when she was considered little more than Damien Rice's sidekick, through her wonderful first album "Sea Sew" (critically acclaimed by many but equally dismissed as lightweight and "plinky plonk" music by some) through her second album "Passenger" and then, her standout achievement in my opinion, her third album "At Swim". Part concept album with nautical themes woven throughout "At Swim" was chosen as the Sunday Times album of the week (as well as "Undertow" check out the stunning "We Then Drowned" and "Prayer for the Dying" on youtube). Part of me is delighted to see Lisa get the attention she deserves but I also selfishly want her to remain a "hidden" talent! As well as being a superb vocalist (Lisa seemingly dreamed of being an opera singer as a child) she is a mulit-instrumentalist, playing guitar, ukulele, mandolin and harmonium. If you search for her duet with John Smith of "Tonight You Belong to Me" you'll see she even does a mean mouth trumpet!

    Lisa is irish.
It is common in irish folk music to mix minor and major and play around with the concept of being niether - The tunings Dadgad and CGCGCD for example draws from this.

It is more complex than this even. A lot relates to the kinds of scales in traditional music as compared to our modern conceptions of 8 note scales. 6 note scales provide even more room for major/minor variation and actually underpin the way the mind listens to 8 note scales anyways, so might as well take the freedom afforded ye!

There is a marvelous serendipity about you finding this song. I found this song in lockdown and loved it, pretty much the same time that I found and started enjoying your videos. Very cool the two musical strands have crossed and I now get why this is so good.

Stumbled across Undertow on TH-cam and had to play it 50 times before moving on. So naturally TH-cam suggested I watch your video later on.
Loved seeing you totally nerd out over how minimalistic, yet packed, this performance is. But I have to say I loved discovering Lisa infinitely more... :)

You've described brilliantly how technically excellent and innovative Lisa is, but there's something there that goes beyond that: it's the emotion that she instils in her voice and evokes in her audience... Try to describe what you're feeling as you listen to her sing to you, and you'll realise how inadequate words can be.

Just wanted to mention that I think I've probably never commented on anyone's TH-cam channel. This video and others I've seen where you're exposing people to new music, across genres and music that's simply raw and powerful... man, I really enjoy this channel and your format. Thank you and keep it up.

It’s one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen and heard. Their harmonies, their connection, the space around them, it’s just incredible. I’ve watched it so many times and am still blown away by Lisa’s ethereal tone and range. Watching you enjoy it as much as I do is a wonderful thing too!

Dude its hard to describe as a relatively new member of your channel and as someone with very close to zero knowledge in musical theory how much I appreciate your video's. Your appreciation for all the artists doing their own things puts a smile upon my face partially because you can musically explain why I have a smile on my face...
    Thanks for all you do.

This, Good Sir, has haunted me since I first viewed it, and I mean "haunted" in the deepest and most profound, beautiful, abject way. Her angelic musicality exists on another plane, and your reaction and explanation serve only to enhance and expand the experience. You not only have a loyal and enthusiastic fan in me, Mr. Palmisano, but you also now have a just-subscribed Lifetime Supporter on Guitargate. You're helping this humble 53-year-old beginner guitarist more than you know. Thank you for all you do.

Thanks. It great to see her music receiving such appreciation. I could hear something special was happening with harmony when I first heard the song livestreamed but could not fathom it. (There were some brilliant performances from the same stable during lockdown.) I came to Lisa Hannigan's music though a duet with Richard Hawley and started looking for more of her work. Definitely, the stripped down live performances are pure magic. The sheer skill to perform in such an exposed way with nothing to hide behind. And not a click track or autotune in sight!

It is exquisitely sonically beautiful. Simple snd immensely complicated all at once. Huge talent on display. I’m musical (can sing) but am not a musician. Great songwriters almost put the listener in the position of knowing what is coming next. What will be pleasing to the ear following this phrase or that phrase. That sensation you’ve heard a song before even though your haven’t. That’s my lay attempt to explain the phenomenon.
