  • How to measure undercarriage on an excavator
Dozers are the same but they do have different wear points.
We do sell undercarriage for just about anything

Even though I'm not in the Excavating field or in the market for a piece of equipment I do appreciate the honesty that you portray when you tell them that 50% doesn't actually mean 50% remaining life in the equipment👍👍

I'm not in the heavy plant machinery like you and Kevin but I enjoy watching people solving mechanical problems, fixing stuff etc. which is why I like watching your channel. This episode blew my mind because it never occurred to me that anyone would get into this much detail with machines of this size. Stupid me I guess, so bring on more videos like this guys.

Likely doing a undercarriage on a 290 Xaxis Hitachi in the very near future. Doing an Oil Change on it today and found a big hole punched in the front idler😖
The track bushings are closer to square than round and the drive sprockets are sharp as a whip! She gone!

Great explanation of undercarriage wear % and if around 50% good to know your not going to get the same hours as the first 50% wear. That was excellent now I know not to double the hours when buying used tracked vehicles. Thanks you just saved me some money.

about the 12 minute mark talking about the wear life and the rollers and components being worn past the hardened areas is absolute fact, most wear edges and components of that nature are only surfaced hardened as they cannot be through hardened because this would make the part too brittle to be reliable under the harsh conditions of an undercarriage.

I just purchased a little bitty Komatsu D 21P dozer for some extremely light finish work. I purchased it from an individual and he kept saying there was about 80% left to the undercarriage. I drove the two hours to look at it because he was an older man and did not know how to send photos of it.
Well when I got there I told him yeah it’s probably just looking at it 50% and he said well that’s probably another 1500 or 2000 hours I said no more like when it gets on the trailer and gets home it’s getting a new undercarriage because like you said in the video once it reaches that point it’s wearing extremely fast probably at about three times the rate.
I put a new undercarriage under myself including sprockets the whole thing. I don’t know why I waited so long to purchase one of those little dozers, sweet running little machine. I mean you could probably never use it for daily use because it would just make you mad and wish you had a dozer ha ha. I run 650k’s i have 2 of them.

Clint Im an attorney, I practice Constitutional law for the state of Illinois but Im also an A&P IA which is an airplane mechanic. I just started building a hanger (brothers & myself) because the place I was rent got too small. I just learned how to operate a dozer & excavator clearing trees for the flat work for the hanger floor. I find that operating this type of equipment is very enjoyable and since watching @dirtperfect first very educational as well. Between you & Mike from Dirt Perfect I have learned a lot about this type of equipment. At 53 Im always learning even if I didnt want to. Thanks for this and all your videos I find them very interesting

Nice explanation. When measuring from center to center, I often measure from left edge to left edge, or right edge to right edge of a circle. A tape measure is much more accurate when you can put a line on a edge, instead of eyeballing the midpoint of a circle. Just a tip from a finemechanical engineer.

read your owners manual on excavators and it will tell you that you must operate/drive on flat surfaces! so in other words make sure you have a grader/dozer grooming the trail ahead of you 😳or you can spend half a lifetime grooming /flattening the path in front of you ☹. considering where excavators end up travelling to do work the equipment manufacturing companies/engineering branch need to come up with alternate designs of undercarriage suitable for uneven terrain travel of which there is more of than the owners will have anticipated and at this time the current selection of undercarriage available is not good enough and narrow pad option helps but there needs to be more done as the cost is high to repair /replace the components.😵‍💫

Sooo,---question, ----what percentage of wear has Kevin got left in him? He looks like his under carriage might have some wear left in it, of course my eyes aren’t as good as they use to be either, let me know, might be interested in leasing him.😁😜. Ok done with the goofy stuff, found that very interesting, nice to know what to look for and how to measure for wear, also found the statement about the under carriage wearing significantly faster after about the 50% wear mark. Thanks for the video sir, great stuff.
