    While HillHouse was more modern in terms of ‘scare dynamics’ , Bly Manor is closer to a classic “Gothic Ghost Story” which tends to be more melancholy and tragic and takes it’s time to build up situations… great story if you don’t compare it to HillHouse and instead take it as it’s own flavor.

    I just noticed for the first time that when Dani leaves her hostel room at the beginning, it’s room number 217, which was the number of the haunted room in the novel “The Shining”, but it was changed to 237 in the movie.

    I'm glad people kind of tempered your expectations for this show. A lot of people go into it expecting it to be a masterpiece like Hill House, but that would be so hard to achieve again. Bly Manor is still an excellent show that shines in its own way and I think you guys are really going to love it!

      @@Volkfire It’s more character-driven than Hill House, there’s a lot more monologues, but it really forces you to think more about the subject material. I will admit it is slow for the first couple episodes, but it’s building up and foreshadowing.

    If you're curious, the shot at 9:50 is caught using a split diopter, a lens of glass that allows you to have two different focal planes in the same shot. You can see the seam along Victoria's hairline. Another recent movie that uses this is "Us"

    • @ericjlee1984
      @ericjlee1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I've noticed that Mike Flanagan loves using split diopter shots in his work. In the Hill House Eulogy episode, he uses them to keep Nellie in focus in the background while Shirley and Luke are speaking at the podium. There's also a crazy one in Midnight Mass that I won't spoil

    A lot of the backlash for Bly Manor to me was that people wanted Hill House Season 2. This isn't Season 2, it's using the same framework to make you feel a very different emotion then Hill House and I think, in retrospect, it nailed it. Perfectly splendid.

    • @jadeandjesse5908
      @jadeandjesse5908 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find this weird because Hill House is literally so slow though.
      In Hill Houss, episodes 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 only move the plot along one minor event at a time and it's the worst part of the show, easily. Bly Manor only wastes episodes 2, 3, and 4. The only episodes of Hill House that explain anything are 1, 5, 6, 9, and 10. Over half the show is stretching it out as much as possible. Episode 2 and 7 are the worst, easily. Nothing happens in those episodes other than character building, which i appreciate but i also appreciate telling a story lol.
      Hill House uses all of episode 2 to tell us Shirley is sad, use all of 3 to tell us Theo is psychic, all of episode 4 to tell us Luke has it rough, all of 7 just to show Hugh talks to Liv, and all of 8 just to have Steven become more convinced about the ghosts. Episodes 8 and 9 repeating the same scenes also sucks.
      I like Hill House, it has a good story but I find rewatching it impossible. The pacing is horrible. Nothing about the story is complicated enough to need 10 and half fucking hours to tell the whole thing. I like Mike's shows getting shorter and shorter.

  • @AlessaParker

    If I remember correctly, when Dani spots not-Luke, she awkwardly waves at him. That reminded me of when kid Luke first saw Abigail in ep 2 of Hill House and waved at her in a similar manner. There are many parallels between the two shows like that.

    The first Mike Flanagan movie I watched (about 9 or 10 years ago) was Absentia, no idea he'd be one to watch or who he was, I think I coincidentally saw his other films, then I think like most took more notice of him from Hill House onwards and would go out my way to watch his works. He definitely has a stable of actors he likes to use and I think Bly Manor has a good collection of them with some really good newcomers. He's really good at finding talented kids to play parts in these things, that really add a lot to the feel of the thing.

      I first watched Oculus and then shortly after I watched Absentia ( after both being recommended on a forum) and I was hooked straight away. I didn't know who Mike Flanagan was at the time, nor did I know that they were both made my him when I watched them. It was only when I was looking up Hill house that I realised He had also made those two movies and that I remember loving them so much. Been hooked on his work ever since, I find him to be one of the best story tellers around, and he defo picks actors well.

    This fun fact blew me away: all exterior shots of the Bly Manor house are CGI: the exterior walls didn't exist, they didn't use a location or build fake facades. It's all green screen. Yet it looks 100% authentic. Very impressive work.

    I think Bly Manor gets the short stick because people weren’t prepared for the tone/genre shift from Hill House. Both are masterpieces of storytelling and, I actually prefer Bly Manor. It’s more of a slow, suspenseful, creeping buildup than the outright terror and scares of Hill House. The series is based on the collective works of Henry James so you can always make guesses as to where it’s going based off the titles.

    While I did enjoy this series I did struggle to get through it as quickly as other shows as I found the character of Dani uninteresting and I personally feel that the actress was mis-cast in it. Although she is good at being scared and having panic attacks, I just did not believe her as an Au Pair or as a previous teacher, as I just felt she had so little expression or compassion for the children and didn't believe her connection with them. I do love how everyone else plays their part in this show, particularly Owen and the children. I did manage to guess some of the plot points in this show ahead of time, but it really did still surprise me at times too and I enjoyed the story enough to watch it in full and will likely watch it again to pick up on all the little things sprinkled throughout.
    Of course this is all just my opinion. I can also see why others loved this so much too.
    Really enjoyed your reaction and look forward to your take on the show as it all unfolds.

    This has a very different atmosphere that is very British; after all, it's an adaptation of Henry James' story "Turn of the Screw" which was published in 1898. Old British haunting stories tend to mix romance, suspense, sadness etc. with the scary. I was a little hesitant when I watched the first and second episode, perhaps because I was hoping for a new "Hill House" series, but I warmed up to it and by the end I was sooo into the characters, the story and the events leading up to the finale. This is a great journey in it's own right and shouldn't really be compared to Hill House. I'm so excited to follow your journey with each episode, getting to know the characters and experience the story unfold.

    Like a lot of people, first I prefered Hill house, but more and more, loved so much Bly manor. The fact is that like everybody I wanted a "Hill house 2", but it's not the case. But the acting, the production and the story is amazing, I'm sure you really love it.
    Just a little tip: don't forget to have tissues near you.

    Flora making the comment about wanting to go to Florida because it's almost her name is also funny because a lot of people do move to areas have the same name as them.
    Then again a lot of them are born into those areas as well

    I love Dani, I like her as a character, I like the story, and she's gorgeous!. look at her during the job interview, the outfit and the hair style make her look amazing. I don't know if it's the colors or what, but her face looks so cute in those scenes!.

    So many comments I want to leave, but most of them could be construed as spoilers T.T
    I'll just say that, as much as I love everyone in this series, I think the kids are particularly good actors, especially Benjamin Evan Ainsworth who plays Miles. He really nails that kind of 'Proper English Boy' vibe that Miles has

    Bly Manor is based on the novella "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. It's a very psychologically unsettling story, even without ghosts. You're right, it is a love story, but a very sordid one.

    since you watch movies, after the show, you should watch the movies that were adaptations of same original sources, and alluded to in shows
    "the haunting", 1963 , for hill house.
    "the innocents", 1961 for bly manor ( though there are several other movies in this case ).
