I've found zip ties work faster and better than rope: you can bend the shimpaku a little to start with, then 1-2 months later, pull the zip tie tighter, and bend more, till you get very tight bends without harm to the tree. Rope is harder to do that adjustment and progressive tightening of bends. But the biggest factor when you do 10,000 trees? Time, zip ties are much faster than rope. Zip ties cost a little bit more than rope and zip ties can cut into the bark a bit more than softer rope. I used rope one season and thought it was much better than wiring for shimpaku starters like these. I was not as happy with the end result compared to zip ties. I also did the zip tie for kuromatsu. I wire initially, get the bend and form set. Then the 2nd year, I'll tighten with zip ties and bend some branches other directions. When he mentioned making the form smaller and more compact with his "hands", that is exactly what I think.
