    Even though this video was obviously rushed, it was a much better overview than the video you did on the K1 (and I was a fairly vocal hater on that video). Wish you would have gone into more detail about why you feel better about the extruder on the K1 Max other than "metallurgy" but if it prints well it prints well. Thanks for the video.

      I need to do a teardown and inspect it. After spending hours messing with the K1 extruder I'm almost scared to take apart this K1 Max extruder, but it needs to be done, for science! It is working great though, Everything on the K1 seemed under extruded to me.

      About the first K1 vid... You gotta admit, compared to the hacky, highly modular half-baked crap Creality has always made - their new machines have a completely unexpected level of build quality.
      My reaction and glowing praise had more to do with the fact that they actually produced a premium-filling machine. I was expecting it to be like the Ender 5 with some decorative panels and a hastily constructed COREXY system, but what we have now is a machine that is actually competitive with the Bambu Lab lineup - which is a completely unexpected turn of events.
      Really what I was expecting is for creality to forfeit the high-end of the printer market and focus on making cheap/crappy/modular low budget machines. But they have completely reinvented themselves... Kind of like Chevy making the new Corvette that is more like a European sportscar - going after a completely different market, style, and performance bracket than anyone expected.
      Not gonna lie, it was tough receiving all the criticisms from that video, but I don't think I was wrong to be excited about Creality upping their game.
      Plus it really puts the heat on Bambu Lab to make even better and more price competitive products. Everybody wins.

    • @Shynd
      @Shynd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NathanBuildsRobots I agree that the level of quality was unexpected, and there are a few very important ways in which the K1 is better than any of the Bambu machines. I don't think anyone was wrong in their criticism of your K1 video, but I also don't necessarily think you are wrong to be excited about Creality being a real contender in the scene. What I think happened (I went back and watched your K1 video today) can be simply explained with two things: your excitement biased you in ways that were not immediately obvious to the viewer, and in the editing process of what was obviously a very long recording down to a shorter video many important things were cut which seemed to leave only what seemed like shilling / excuses. And maybe that you lack a bit of experience in the whole TH-cam creator thing; I'd be interested to hear your thoughts in a year on how you feel about the K1 video, what you should've done differently, editing changes, etc.
      I'm sure it was difficult to receive the criticism, but I hope that you are (or were) able to revisit the criticism without any sort of defensive mechanism or deflection. I still think that was a deeply flawed video that did not do a good job of communicating where you were coming from, what your expectations were low going into it and how those expectations were shattered with some actual competence, etc. Even just something as simple as like "guys, I might be missing a bunch of glaring issues, but my whole world has been up-ended because I thought this was going to be a dumpster fire of a machine and it's.. it's actually quite good!" or similar statement and legitimately all of my criticism goes away.
      These machines at these prices are disruptive, and I agree that's good for all of us. It's good for you as a content creator (both from a content standpoint and from an affiliate link standpoint) and it's good for consumers to have options, drive prices of other things down, motivate competitors to put out better products, etc. I think you said elsewhere that the best time to buy a printer is one year from now, and I 100% agree with that, and it's largely due to the K1 and K1 Max that that is likely true.
      Anyway, I am sure there was lots of criticism that you received that was mean-spirited and only looking to shit on you. I hope that the criticism that had valid points doesn't get lost in all of the rampant negativity, because I feel like some of the other comments had some pretty decent detailed points about why we were disappointed. I admit that there are even parts of my own comments where I assumed intent that isn't helpful, and I'm sure it's easy to completely ignore the useful portion of the comment if it ends with something you know to be untrue (since only you know your true intent).
      I don't agree with many of your points or conclusions, and that's fine. You've done a much better job (in my opinion, if it means anything) of explaining why you've come to those conclusions in the past few videos, and I can draw different conclusions based on your explanations. I guess what I'm saying is, at least according to one loser on the Internet (me), you're trending in the right direction. I do appreciate the effort that goes into the videos and I wish you well in your endeavors.

    I want a K1 Max now but prudence dictates that I wait a couple of months. I'm glad to see that Creality fixed their K1 extruder problem, although another K1 review showed under extrusion and some of the K1 extruder problems manifested after a day or two of printing so the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned. I'm not yet convinced that this extruder design will be long term reliable, and that's a requirement for any 3D printer.
    Creality must abide by the open source licensing and the best way would be stock Klipper. They should also publish K1 and K1 Max configurations for all popular slicers with all popular filament types, and provide the parameters so any slicer can be easily modified to slice for a K1 or K1 Max. In general, I wish Creality would take better advantage of open source software instead of picking fights with the open source community, and focus more on solid hardware designs that are thoroughly tested before shipping.
    It was kind of Creality to include a filament reel as a test print, given that a rear mounted reel on this large printer is dumber than dirt. On the plus side, at 6:20, it looks like the K1 Max moved the filament run-out sensor inside the enclosure on the back side? I'd love to see a thin and flexible CANBUS cable to the print head with an optical filament run-out sensor integrated into the top of the extruder.
    I look forward to a K1 Max TPU test (maybe with the reverse Bowden tube but also with the extruder fed directly from an overhead reel), some explanation of the lidar and whether it's a useful feature or just Bambu Me Too marketing fluff, as well as long term reliability of the K1 Max. Thanks!

      I was kind of dreading making this video because I didn't want to have to shit on their extruder design again. But by golly they fixed it. I hope it holds up!
      The extruder fix addresses the primary concern I had with the system.
      The secondary concern is their use/abuse of open-source software. They really need to release the source code for this machine. I am pretty sure they are going to release it, but in the meantime, people are rightfully a bit pissed about the situation.

      I repeat: Klipper is GPL v3 and that license does not only require releasing the source code, it also requires any product using it offering the end user a way to install his own modified version of it. In the GPL v3 license this is the part mentioning the "Installation Information" requirements. So, it's not only that Creality has to release the source, they have to provide explicit instructions on how any user can replace Creality's Klipper derivative with the user's own version. At least that requires providing root access and a way to modify the installed files.

      I have asked that question in person to one of the founders and the head of product development. Kind of grilled them on it and made them uncomfortable/borderline unprofessional.
      Their answer has been yes, they will open-source soon.
      I tend to believe them since they have open-sourced all of their previous printers, but you never know for certain. If that is a dealbreaker for you, I would wait until an official announcement.
      All of their engineering resources have been focused on getting the K1 and K1 Max out the door (and a couple more lower budget printers that should be announced soon), so it makes sense that they have not had the time to dedicate to preparing the files for a public release.
      The Creality vs Bambu Lab competition has been white-hot lately, both companies are working furiously to get products out as quickly as possible. If they had to choose between pissing off the community for a bit vs losing the whole market to Bambu Lab... IDK, which do you think you would do?

    I'm curious about a long-term review of the K1 Max. Creality sort of has a reputation of having to tinker with their printers constantly after a while. I like the build volume but feel they need an AMS to be even more competitive in this printer space. Becoming a hard decision between a P1S/AMS Combo and the K1 Max.

    • @NathanBuildsRobots
      @NathanBuildsRobots  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For me, the increased build volume is a lot more useful than multi-color prints. But to each their own. If you do more cosmetic prints, or prints that would benefit by having a second color, AMS is more useful.

    • @TheCrytone
      @TheCrytone ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NathanBuildsRobots I agree that the build volume is nice. There's no way Bambu isn't working on a larger format printer (rumored X1E maybe?) though, but likely at a small premium increase.
      The AMS is not only useful for multi color prints. It's also useful for using up partial rolls of filament and/or ensuring you don't run out of filament mid print with no slowdown in production.

    Having owned 4 different models of Creality 3D Printers over the years, I wouldn't touch any of their printers again. Not that my experience was necessarily bad. But in 2023, with appearance of companies like Bambu, Creality products don't look as appealing any longer. From my experience, it seems Creality doesn't use their own machines. They copy what other people are doing, and offer it for less $$$, but the product doesn't work anywhere near as well as the original. All of the features look great on paper, but for one reason or another don't work well in practice. I can give you an example. The filament sensor. What a great feature, essential if you ask me. It never really worked on any of my machines. Not on CR10s, not on Ender 3 V2, not on Ender 7. The print always had significant defects, and wasn't usable. Either it skipped a few rows, or a huge blub of filament was added to the print, or it knocked the part down, or the print would stop because of the sensor momentarily reported no filament, even though it was there. Why? They used generic Malrin firmware, but never bothered to adopt it well to their own machines. It's just a small example. Most of the features Creality offers are only half working, and are there for the marketing purposes mostly.
    I would definitely buy a P1S with AMS instead of K1 Max. I think there is no comparison in real life, when it comes to practical use.

      @@NathanBuildsRobots - The K1 extruder had two rigidly mounted drive rollers with one pivoting in for printing and out to load filament, rather than spring tension to engage the filament as is more typical. In a video I saw, one of the drive roller axles bent outward after a day or two of printing, resulting in loss of filament engagement and persistent under extrusion. Hardening that axle may be the fix.

At the volumes they'd be using for two axles per extruder, it seems that a simple CNC lathe stainless steel shaft would be cheaper than Zamak given the mold tooling cost. @@NathanBuildsRobots I love having a 350. I make custom arcade sticks and hitboxes for fighting games. Having a bed that size allows me to print reasonably sized products. A 400 might be nice but I would definitely only do it if it had an AWD xy stepper system like the VZBOT cause I really don't like the idea of a larger printer at the cost of speed and print quality combined. I'm not sure if it's true or not but I hear that having a bed that's too large can have more issues with consistency and warping due to poor thermal efficiency. I agree with you that 300-350 is a good sweet spot for a fast high quality printer. I think anything bigger would cost too much for the average person for something core xy at decent quality that isn't just cheap garbage.

      @@NathanBuildsRobots Seems invalid. Would you recommend upgrading my Prusa i3 Mk3s+ for the K1? As its faster and packed with AI features, etc.

      @@SPG_ADR13N Normal k1 probably no. k1 has closed firmware (its klipper but they afaik have not released the firmware yet) unless you need the speed of the k1 save the money and stick to your prusa.

      @@MinePossu sort of... I am not making any loss, in the worst case 30€ or so.. Selling a Prusa on Ebay is about 550€ (I have a lot of extras (Nozzles, filament, etc.) So then with that money I can wait and buy the K1 when its on sale (amazon prime day or upcoming Black Friday)

      Black friday is going to be nuts this year. Both companies are going to have a warchest of inventory by then.
