    I followed this procedure to replace the Bank 1 (rear) catalytic converter on our 2009 MDX here in California over the weekend and it just passed the smog test with flying colors. The hardest part about this is the tight access on the rear of the engine, so unbolting and re-bolting the cat to the bank 1 head was a challenge. Also, getting the tie rod disconnected from the steering knuckle was difficult and required a carefully placed Pittman puller. Make sure to replace the gasket between the cat and the head as well as the three exhaust gaskets that seal the J-pipe with the engine cats and rear cat. After completing the repair, I didn't even need to clear the P0420 code and the MDX cleared it automatically. It took a couple of days for it to complete its drive cycle (as determined using an OBD2 scan tool/ThinkDiag). I checked it this morning and the scan tool reported that all emissions tests were good, so I took it in to get it smogged. One last thing to note was that I noticed some blue smoke from the exhaust pipes when I first started it up. This is probably manufacturing oils, etc, burning off, so no need to be concerned. MDX runs better now as well, which is an added bonus. Thanks so much for the direction on this!

    Just so your aware...and I'm sure it's probably a TH-cam glitch but your Milwaukee products page/link will continuously pop up and blocks half of your video to the point of frustration and can only see half of what you're showing.
    **And its a real shame because I truly think your video is the best and very well explained.
    Just thought you should know.
    Edit...
    To let you know, it's while using the Chromecast to my monitor is when it happens and I can't get rid of it.
    However, thru my phone or computer directly.. I can x and remove it to properly view the video.
    Anyways... I just wanted you to know. And thank you for a great video.

    First thank you, absolutely great video. You make it look easy enough that I may try this. Would love to have a lift to do it but sadly I have only jacks and stands. I have a 2009 MDX, I've got the dreaded p0420 code right before I needed to register and smog. I deleted code, ran car long enough to reset and passed emissions but code keeps coming back. Mileage sucks, maybe 12-14 mpg. It's near impossible to find this part nowadays. Any suggestions? The couple guys I've found to fix want upwards of 1400?

    • @John-fz3ij
      @John-fz3ij 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get that checked out! There is a connection at the radiator that corrodes and can allow your trans fluid and coolant to mix, which you really don't want unless you like buying transmissions...

    This is a great video! Can I ask, when you drop that j-pipe where there are 3 nuts each for the cats, are there gaskets between the pipe and the two cats that needs to be replaced when re-installing the pipe?

    • @martinyoung779
      @martinyoung779 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually do see that there are o-ring gaskets you installed when putting the pipe back. I keep seeing flat triangular shaped gaskets though with the catalytic converter kits I see for sale. Don't these have to go between the bottom of the cat and the top of the exhaust pipe?

    I bought a 08 MDX 147 mil , The check in mission light came on with code p0420 , 2 days after I bought it, I was wondering if the previous owner have known about this problem and he didn't tell me or is just bad luck for me, I had checked the car and I drove it and seems OK nothing was wrong with it , thanks again

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imad Soulaimane there is the possibility of that code been here before. But it would be hard to prove. Like you I’d be very suspicious. I would ask the previous owners for service records and see if that code showed up anywhere in the paperwork.

      if its just on jack stands you should be fine to leave it and just use a ladder. He just "lowered" it because it was on a lift and needed to get up above.

      My bet is the J-pipe (the pipe that connects the bank 1 and 2 cats to the exhaust pipe). I had to remove it for an oil pan reseal on our 2009 MDX and when I reinstalled it, I noticed this sound (at about that speed). I replaced the J-pipe and the sound went away. I think they get degraded inside over time and the removal just hastened this.

      How to Automotive actually not yet. My wife has a Acura TL and the part and location are very similar. On some sites they say this part is the same as the TL. The only reason I’m changing this part is Bc the owner before me cross threaded the top o2 sensor Bank1 sensor 1. I have even thought about cutting out that threading and welding a new thread. But I’m not sure that’s possible due to the tight location. So in about a week I will be doing my this install.
