Moonlight and sunshine on steamOS works awesome if you already have a gaming PC. Windows on deck works amazing once you install modded gpu drivers and Handheld Companion, but it takes a while to get it all set up right. SteamOS is just unbeatable when it comes to power management and that's important for handheld gaming.
for windows with amd gpus, i would reccomend using modded drivers. also dualboot seriously if you are going to use windows, because steamos is important too
my only issue with windows on steam deck is the brightness control. somehow it won't let me go dimmer than it should be able to even though it says it's already at 0 brightness. i have to move the slider back and forth to make the screen dim.
U have that problem too, use the touch screen, and tap the slider higher, then drag it down, over and over again, or to your desired dimness, it what works for me at least
windows is not a console os, that is the issue, updates are breaking, touch is terrible. I love SteamOS, but windows for me allows me to have one 4tb drive for all my devices with steam games installed... dual boot will come eventually once its mature enough.
Thanks for the opinion. FYI, I installed handheld companion and it jacked up my steam deck. It was fighting with steam over controls, made steam button bring up xbox game bar (even though I had it disabled) and caused the trackpad to stop working altogether at times.
ya i delt with that too i went in the handheld companion and disbaled the steam controller cus the controller conflicts doing that dose disable the trackpads though but i was ok with that cus after setting everything up i didint need the touchpads that much the game bar thing though i did not deal with
I have had Windows 11 on my Steam Deck. It ran fine plus you have the added bonus of a full computer experience when adding a mouse and keyboard. On holidays I bring a portable monitor that can run for hours on a powerbank. Works so nice with the Steam Deck. Still I am on Steam OS now. The reason is the controller. I just can't seem to get a stable situation between Steam and for example Xbox Game pass games. If Steam would just make drivers that work fully under Windows, I'd be on W11 in no time (or if someone knows how to get it work properly).
In my experience, I have gotten it to work fairly consistently, but I start encountering weird issues. If both steam is open while handheld companion is open at the same time if I’m playing a non-steam game, my solution is just to force close Steam through task manager, or shut down Steam through Steam has been a consistent way to get it to work and turning off Start on power in TaskManager preventing steam from opening when you turn on the steam deck helps eliminate that issue but it’s not a 100% fix sometimes I forget or sometimes the mappings are a bit sticky and it doesn’t know that steam was closed so I have to reload the game but in general their minor annoyance is now no longer a game breaking issue
id recommend checking out Steam Deck Tools. Adds a lot of the Steam OS quick menu utility like TDP control, brightness and volume control, display color profile, etc it also adds full system wide controller support for non steam games. it also doesnt have the issue where theres double input. It basically just recognizes the Steam Deck controls as an Xbox 360 or PS4 controller connected to it.
Yes! I got it working with handheld companion. Tools wouldn't load the controller tool, but I use the fan controls of the tools. Also got css loader working and amd config. Just looking for a way to get the Steam button working in Steam big picture mode.
Windows is made for laptops and desktops. I've made my peace with it. I don't need a windows handheld unless they make something that works great with handhelds. If I truly need something from windows, I can stream to steam deck on local network with virtually no input lag. I never bought it to play multiplayer games or shit like that, I already have a pc for that. So I dunno why anyone would install a shitty OS on a machine not made for it.
I had steamos for a good bit then installed regular windows 11 and then I went back to steamos and then recently I did windeckos steamos is cool but if ur someone who plays mostly PvP titles or destiny 2 etc windeckos is the way plus i prefer the more simple way of installing applications

I am a computer tech, so the expericence ive gotten with my steam deck, is a bit better than some PCs ive dealt with. I see the same common issues that I would see in a laptop, and I mean behavior wise...the linux OS was confusing to me. linux is a language different than windows so this is my reason for installing windows 11 to my steam deck. I think the windows works better than linux, just my personal opinion. for some strange reason, I have not been able to figure out the SD card driver for the steam deck. I got the othr drivers to install, yet when I go into controll panel, I still see 5 drivers that need installation, but I decided to put that to the side for now til I have my needed equipment to better driver installing
I dont think one OS "works" better than another, its about if you know how to use it, and if you're coming from another OS of course another OS is going to be confusing to you.
I don’t mind SteamOS, I use Windows 11. Thing for me is the damn Easy Anti-Cheat Bullshit. Other than that if I can’t run it on the Deck, that’s what my cMP 5;1 is for.

Windows 11 LTSC won't be available until Fall 2024 But if you rly want the best possible performance and battery, SteamOS is the best. Linux is superior to Windows, the ideal gaming OS. And SteamOS made Linux-gaming possible
Depending on the game, it could be kind of Jenkee all really depends on how the game handles being minimized. For example, Minecraft handled it fine but games like Jedi order for me at least didn’t like getting minimized and occasionally would crash once resuming the game, but that solved by keeping the game in window to full screen mode.
Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it windows on an SD card just isn’t very responsive and it can decrease the lifespan of your microSD card I recommend if you’re trying to dual boot, have a very large internal SSD maybe a terabyte or 2 TB and then cut that in half for each operating system by partitioning the drive
Windows uses NTFS as a file system. It is also a journaling file system constantly making writes wear down the drive fairly quickly. Best to create a separate partition for windows on the steamdeck storage and just dualboot.
It plays Fortnite fine enough. Warzone was less good. I would say you need something like the ally or the Legion go something a bit more powerful if you want to play Warzone on the go at least comfortably.
I would use the performance rendering option, all low, basically and increasing the UMA in the steam decks bios to four gigs. It’s basically increasing your video memory from the one gig. You usually have reserved when you’re in windows to four, which you should see a noticeable increase in basically, any game you play this is because the steam deck went in windows has one gig V ram, and then uses your SSD for swapping memory around and that is much slower and can decrease your performance.
There are many ways to do this you can use fraps but that is super old, or msi Afterberuner, and even appluction you can install to bring back the stats veiw from steam os

I have problems with windows, because every time I run a game seems like video goes through another screen, like if I had another screen connected, there is sound but not image, and is something that hapens even reinstalling windows again
I dunno man, the way you speak about the issues without specific examples is kind of telling that it was your personal issues, not technical ones. I've had Windows 11 on mine since launch and it's been perfectly fine. I've never had any control issues. Sounds like you're not choosing appropriate controller layouts. You installed new drivers, didn't check settings, and complain about performance. So you just had settings reset. This review is mostly disingenuous imo.
Apologies it’s been four months since I made this video so if I get some details wrong bear with me the control issues I was having was with non-steam games every steam game I played worked perfectly no controller problems whatsoever but the moment I went and tried to play games from the epic game store or gog i ran into some problems but as I mentioned in the video, I did eventually figure it out. I still use windows on my steam deck. Any of the issues I did have I have fixed that was kind of the point of the video is talking about the issues I had and then how I fixed it and some of the problems I had were kind of dumb and I’m not an expert on the topic, but I was sharing my personal experience. When I installed the latest drivers, I ran into performance issues in certain games. The one that immediately came to mind was the most parent to me because the game I played the most is Destiny 2. I tried all sorts of things, but it just for some reason Destiny 2 went from running spectacular to choppy and I don’t blame valve necessarily for that. I blame AMD because I had experiences in past using AMD graphics cards on desktop that would run into the same issue some games don’t like some drivers. It’s just amd quirkyness and not the steam deck specifically I don’t know if I said that explicitly in the video. Like I said I still use windows on my steam deck to this day. How I fixed my driver issue wasn’t resetting the whole thing it was just ddu Then just installed the last driver that ran Destiny 2 specifically the Best, which was at the time the previous driver hopefully this gives you a little bit more insight into my thought process
@@JustSomeJacob The store shouldn't matter. The games would just use whatever joystick is available. If the Steam Controller is in the devices section of the control panel it's available to all software. It's the same as using a desktop. Did you only test Destiny 2? I would agree to an extent, but at least the windows can be fixed or mitigated fairly easily any jank you come across in SteamOS is usually really hard to get past or really annoying, if you aren’t proficient, or have some level experience with Linux, which isn’t particularly common but if you’re doing strictly surface level things, and you don’t ever need to go into desktop mode yeah it’s better but for me, that just wasn’t the case

Other than that if I can’t run it on the Deck, that’s what my cMP 5;1 is for.
my steam deck windows doesn't work any game in full screen mode. no idea
hmm, try this
go to AMD setting and set Scaling Mode: Full panel
What should i do for game setting on windows all games are laggy
change your vram to 4gb, and watch vids about how to debloat Windows, also videos about making windows optimized for gaming.
Use Windows 10 LTSC. Windows 11 is bad. LTSC is a debloated Windows. Extremely minimal, focuses on performance, privacy, and security. Windows 11 LTSC won't be available until Fall 2024
But if you rly want the best possible performance and battery, SteamOS is the best. Linux is superior to Windows, the ideal gaming OS. And SteamOS made Linux-gaming possible
how does the suspension while mid game work in windows?
Depending on the game, it could be kind of Jenkee all really depends on how the game handles being minimized. For example, Minecraft handled it fine but games like Jedi order for me at least didn’t like getting minimized and occasionally would crash once resuming the game, but that solved by keeping the game in window to full screen mode.
How does GTA5 run on 11?
could i download windows on sd card ? And at the same time use it regularly when boot through ssd steam os ?
Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it windows on an SD card just isn’t very responsive and it can decrease the lifespan of your microSD card I recommend if you’re trying to dual boot, have a very large internal SSD maybe a terabyte or 2 TB and then cut that in half for each operating system by partitioning the drive
Windows uses NTFS as a file system. It is also a journaling file system constantly making writes wear down the drive fairly quickly. Best to create a separate partition for windows on the steamdeck storage and just dualboot.
i just wanna play fortnite and warzone so doest it worth it to buy and install windows just for that ?
It plays Fortnite fine enough. Warzone was less good. I would say you need something like the ally or the Legion go something a bit more powerful if you want to play Warzone on the go at least comfortably.
How is fortnite could you get 60+? In what settings? And performance or direct x?
I would use the performance rendering option, all low, basically and increasing the UMA in the steam decks bios to four gigs. It’s basically increasing your video memory from the one gig. You usually have reserved when you’re in windows to four, which you should see a noticeable increase in basically, any game you play this is because the steam deck went in windows has one gig V ram, and then uses your SSD for swapping memory around and that is much slower and can decrease your performance.
for Fortnite, play it with xbox cloud gaming or if you can with nintendo switch
How did you display FPS on Windows?
There are many ways to do this you can use fraps but that is super old, or msi Afterberuner, and even appluction you can install to bring back the stats veiw from steam os
@@JustSomeJacob I was wondering how to display it as shown at 10:00. It seems like it's MSI Afterburner. Thank you for the answer!
@@guestuser515 I followed some guide online. I’ve been looking for it to post here for you. I will keep looking, and I will add it to the description when I find it.
No Half-Life 3? Too soon bro
Dual boot oled FTW, get good
I switched to Windows be ause of pc gamepass
Do you know how to emulate ps3 games if so could you do w video with steps i know how to do ps2 i cant get ps3 for nothing !
PS3 emulator sucks. I think it's best to wait until it gets better
so did u recmended for me instil windos11?
yes and no it depends if u would resive any benefit on windows for example i switch to windows cus i wanted to play destiny 2 but u cant do that in steam os cus of anticheat i also had more reasons than that but anyways if u don't have a good reason to switch or u not having any problems with steam os in general then there's no real point in switching
Don't use Windows 11. Use Windows 10 LTSC. It's a very minimal, de-bloated OS that focuses on Performance, Privacy, and Security. Windows 11 LTSC won't be available until Fall 2024
do you have a linkto the specific steam deck driver?
The specific one i use or the just where they are generally
I have problems with windows, because every time I run a game seems like video goes through another screen, like if I had another screen connected, there is sound but not image, and is something that hapens even reinstalling windows again
Did you fix it?
It's an online game, maybe the issue was networking related?
#1430 ini aja Lah 👍
I’d rather use SteamOS, Windows is jank.
I would agree to an extent, but at least the windows can be fixed or mitigated fairly easily any jank you come across in SteamOS is usually really hard to get past or really annoying, if you aren’t proficient, or have some level experience with Linux, which isn’t particularly common but if you’re doing strictly surface level things, and you don’t ever need to go into desktop mode yeah it’s better but for me, that just wasn’t the case
i would dualboot tbh
Arguably jank but can play all the games you paid for
Absolutely, SteamOS / Linux is way better for gaming, it's much more flexible and actually built for the deck. I'd never replace SteamOS with Windows on the deck for sure but to each their own.
@@simhz2221except for games that dont work on linux :)
Use Windows 10 LTSC. Windows 11 is rly bad, especially for gaming. Windows 11 LTSC won't be available until Autumn 2024
How do I install it. Recently dual boot window 10 via Rufus but the valve APU driver could not install. And i mainly just want to play FC 24
@@timokins. IDK how to set up Windows on a handheld. IDK if it's the same as a laptop/desktop or not. I know it has its issues or something. I don't plan on downgrading to Windows from SteamOS when I get a Deck, either

Whats the difference between LTSC and normal Windows 10? Is it more stable on the SteamDeck or smth?
W10 and 11 are OS for boomers.
Go cry 😂
I bought two steam decks one for deck os and one for windows. solved my issues. I prefer mostly windows at home but if I'm out and about deck os wins all day.
What a massive waste of money when you can dual boot.
