La plante hace 2 años y nunca pode correctamente en invierno. siempre deje 5 a 6 llemas como se hace en verano. espero este año ver alguna flor. aqui faltan 2 meses para la primavera, asi que es el momento de podar. Muchas gracias

    Thank you for all the lovely comments on here about this video. Whilst I'm competent at Wisteria pruning, this was really a test run for me on videoing gardening tutorials. I hope to do more of these this year....including one showing the flowers in spring / summer, along with how to keep wisteria under control during the summer months when it puts on all that young whippy growth. Happy Gardening! Z.

    Hi Zoe, I purchased a wisteria this summer, intending to train it much like yours, up against a wall of my siding-clad home with wires and turnbuckles. But, then I was given dire warnings about the wisteria growing underneath the siding and damaging my home, so I haven't planted it yet as I'm trying to figure out what to do. It certainly doesn't appear as if your wisteria is damaging your siding. Have you experienced that at all? Perhaps it's because you stay on top of the pruning? I am not going to be able to climb a ladder where I wanted to plant mine, it's on a slope and I'm very clumsy. So, I'd have to hire that done, which might not be as often as would be ideal. Bottom line is, do you think it's safe to plant my wisteria against my siding?

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gayla, I think anything that has an air of mystery about it is considered tricky. I prune my wisteria twice a year. Once in winter & a lighter prune to remove whippy shoots through summer, after flowering & that's pretty much it. Because the house is wood cladded, we do get some shoots go underneath, but we remove these before they get too thick & take hold so haven't had any problems thankfully. They do put on a lot of growth over the spring / summer season though! Hence keeping them in check is good for you & your plant. I can't speak for your personal situation, but as you suggest, with some help, I'm sure it can be trained beautifully. And they do look stunning against a backdrop of a wall or fence.

    Is it too early to prune it now or early November or wait till December January

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, I’ve personally never pruned it this early.... I’ve always waited until early in the new year. It’s obviously not a question of the plant withstanding the cold weather, as it’s a lot colder in January / February.
      My wisteria still has most of its leaves on it so I will wait. It’s much easier to see what to do when the leaves are off the plant & the branches are bare. Hope this helps, Z.

      @@bushveldkid7640 Hi I'm in South Central UK. So northern Hemisphere. According to Google I'm in zone 6-9. We have mild winters here - usually down to --10C at most, more normal -5C, and daytime temperatures of 0-4C through winter I would say. Hope that helps

    Can I prune the wisteria in May?

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Abner, I wouldn't really recommend it unless it's in a really bad way. Wisteria typically flowers any time from April - Jun (in the Northern hemisphere) so you risk losing the flowers. I would wait until after it's flowered & then trim any wisps from this season to keep it under control & then do the big structural prune over Winter

    What if you have the wisteria grown out to how you want it. Seems if every year you cut back the whippy ends to five buds, then back to two or three in early spring, that eventually over several years it would just continue getting bigger. Can you keep cutting back to where it was previously?

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jake, apologies for the slow reply.
      That’s pretty much the situation with my wisteria now. It’s a fair bit bigger than when I made this video. Realistically I don’t want it to get bigger but more flowers are always welcome.
      So what I found this year is some flower spurs looked dead - so I pruned them out. Also some whippet long shoots were originally left to fill gaps in the plants structure…. But these aren’t always needed once there’s more spurs on the plant so I pruned these out too.
      Essentially I’m doing just as you said… looking to keep it within bounds, health & producing as many flowers as possible.
      Hope this helps

I have wisteria growing along my fence probably about 15feet along the fence, it so happens I have not pruned yet and it froze last week ( here in southern Missouri ) I have never pruned before and this was the first year it got like this so much leaves what do I do? Cut now? Boy any help.would.be great im truly at a loss thanks you very much... Gina

      Hi Gina, Apologies for the late reply. I hope you cut back the wisteria! :) I'm based in the UK & our structural pruning for our wisteria is done some time between December & February normally - which are our coldest months. So pruning in the cold doesn't seem to be a problem for them....though I obviously don't know just how cold it gets there. Good luck x

      Hi Randy, I’ve not seen any research with that info so cannot comment. I’ve always done angled cuts when pruning & get good result.

    can i grow wisteria in pot outside in winter? or it will frozen?

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends where you are. They can be pot grown for sure. Just choose the biggest pot you can (minimum 45cm dia.), give it lots of compost & keep it watered through spring & summer. They are quite hardy but I would position it in a sunny spot next to a wall or fence as it will need support once it gets going.

    • @zoelovesgardening8094
      @zoelovesgardening8094  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is Wisteria sinensis - the Chinese one. I have never tried to propagate the cuttings, but the original plant was tiny when I planted it & did nothing for the first 5 or 6 years. It'snow 15 years old.
