    To get the full benefits of this reel you need all the extra bits from Weston Developments. Spools, line lay, line clips, bail roller, speed caps and black handle knob !!! Then and only then you have that special look and feel for this classic carp reel. Sets you apart and says that you really do have that particular carpy feeling only custom kit can give. Or like me just a tackle tart but oh they do look good.

    I've had mint ss3000's, mint 5000h baboon bums, I've had brand new 5000t with all the Weston Developments bits.
    I then had casting tuition with Mark Hutchinson and he had a set of Shimano ci4 14000s on. After a few 160 yard casts with my kit, I did a few 200 yard casts with his kit.
    During the very first retrieve with the Shimanos I said to myself "why in Gods name am I mucking about with my ancient design reels". The Shimanos were like a Rolls Royce compared to the Daiwas which were like a 1980s Austin Maestro in comparison.
    The line lay of modern reels is on another level, the smoothness of operation is on another level, the balance, the lightness, and crucially the retrieve rate is on another level. Old Daiwas retrieve is awful. Even with the Weston worm drive, at 100 yards the difference is staggering and genuinely makes a difference to the pleasure of fishing.
    I sold my ss3000's (blasphemy!), I sold my fully blinged 5000ts after just a few months of ownership, I sold my baboon bums, and I bought Shimano ci4 14000 and 5500 and honestly have never looked back or regretted my decision.
    My fishing is tangibly more pleasurable as a result.
    These old Daiwa reels are objectively awful old things at extortionate "carpy scene" prices.
    I will say though, I use a pair of ss2600s for my stalking and margin fishing and I love them to pieces, I actually think theyre the stars of the "old" Daiwa line up, followed by the baboon bums/emblems.

    backwinding is a bit of an old school thing from an age when reel clutches weren't the best. It's not necessary for all occasions and I'd say (even as someone who does it out of habit) the only time it is really advantageous is when the fish is right under the rod tip because you have more fine control of whether to let the fish run or whether to lock things down, you don't end up in that situation where the fish feels like it's beaten and you've tightened the clutch only for it to go on one last mad run and pull the hook because you were unable to react fast enough.

    Definitely going to look into these for my catfishing. Really like the European big pit reels for that because of the huge amount of line i can put on it and the insane drag strength you get because of the torque of having alot of line on tight.

  • @Backs4more
    @Backs4more ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have to remember that these reels are a 30 year old design and when they were first made, we did not “clip up”. The line clip was purely to stop line peeling off the spool when not being used.
    It’s the same with the Emblem X 5000t.
    Having said that, I use the Windcast QDA and the clips are absolutely perfect. It would not take much to redesign the current clips on the Tournaments.

      Hi mate, of corse I understand this. I just keep my reviews as real as I can. I see a lot of “reviews” on TH-cam where a product hasn’t even been used or has many negative points but it’s not brought up.
      I mentioned the line clip because now a clip is used often in fishing and people should be aware that your line will be damaged, potentially cracking off or even worse loosing a fish that’s towing a rig because of it. Still think they’re the best on the market 😉🎣

    • @Backs4more
      @Backs4more ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rodsup3934 gotcha! We used to place a small section of pole elastic under the clip to solve the problem. It pushes the clip open a little, and the elastic helps prevent line damage.
      I still do this on my original Baboons as I did not want to damage the spools with the new “modern” clips that require a small spool modification to fit.

    • @rodsup3934
      @rodsup3934  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I’ve seen the pole elastic used for this. I might give it a go before I replace the clips.

    I have owned both 5000T and 6000T and used them mainly for beach casting and foreign trips. They are well built but the rubber ring at the bottom of the spool will crack and need replacing every few years. These are extremely robust and will last for decades.

      Get rid of the Daiwa spool and buy either the Weston spool or the MV spool and you won’t need the rubber ring at all. Problem solved.

      @@rodsup3934 personal preference is such a key thing dude. The fact you can customise retro reels with modern components is so cool and unique and the prospect of slowing upgrading them overtime keeps the carp bug ticking haha. I've found a set with a few blemishes for £500 for 3. Seems a bit too good if you ask me.

    I’m looking to buy some Daiwa Infinity X BR Reels, do people recommend then for long distance? And just generally how are they?

    • @rodsup3934
      @rodsup3934  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, I haven’t used them or know anyone who has so could say. I love hit spots I couldn’t before with the 5000t though.

    • @outdooropaholger9998
      @outdooropaholger9998 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends. Had the S5000T but sold them when the Infinitys came out, bought those. The Infinity casts quite well, better than the S5000T and is a more modern design, but the extra large diameter Spool brings a lot of torque to the spool axle. While winding in heavy loads, everything bends, so they do the job but won't last forever. The knob for the baitrunner adjustment feels extremely cheap and flimsy. And the baitrunner doesn't work as intended, the large and heavy spool needs quite some force to start spinning and doesn't stop doing that immediately after the fish stops, there is too much momentum. Hadn't kept mine for long, switched to the Shimano Longcast, which are imo a far better design, but baitrunner and big longcast spool isn't a good match at all. So bought a set of S5000T a second time shortly after. Much sturdier and more practical.
      Don't know how expensive the Penn Surfblaster is over there, but that would be my go to reel nowadays if weight doesn't matter. Shimano Ultegra if it does, or, if long distance is archieved by using a boat, would buy a non Longcast Penn Spinfisher or Shimano Baitrunner D or OC, or even a Multiplier.
      Think the S5000T is a nice thing, but the clip, the wobbly rotor, weight, line catching lineroller and oldfashioned expensive spool are not really up to date.

    I been in the same boat for ages wanting these reels and finally got them today although I went with the 6000t as it holds more line and I will using them for sea fishing . They will probably outlast me and if I ever get bored of them they hold there value very well

    Hi mate yeah the line clip is rubbish they were the same on the ss 3000 twenty years ago it is about they change them because the other dawia reels have good line clips.i have got the dawia ts5000be reels love them but same problem with my spools.i have had the slow oscillation done on mine the line lay is brilliant and it has made the difference when I have been casting out.with squeal on spool I just spray silicone on them and all ok mate tight lines 👍👍
