Darn if I'm enjoying playing with you in my closet, this old Man has a lot to learn, so thanks for posting :) The search is on to repair my Conn Alto #206xxx.
Hello Mr Matthew, congratulations on your performance, it's all very inspiring, an incentive for me to continue studying saxophone. I am Brazilian but I love the classic American music and jazz .. I wonder what Mr software uses to manage your play-along's? Much success in your endeavors and full of happiness to your family New Year.
Great stuff Matt, lovely rendition of a superb tune. Not least in that key, which I find a bit of a sod to get around in naturally, being a bit "off-piste" in the repertoire (for me at least). That set-up has a lovely natural open C sharp sound though. Keep 'em coming.
Obvously , you play (well) by ear, but you don't know the chords of the song. It is a lack for improvising. The theme is ok, like a singer, , but the impro needs to work on the chords. The great Stan Getz didn't ignore anything about it. You play more than a singer than a jazzman.
Pascal Thouvenin I agree!! I am trying to get better at this aspect, and this was a few years ago. I do generally know and play through the chord tones, but making that interesting is the biggest challenge. This is why it takes 4-5 hours a day for a few years to get that kind of playing down.... I can’t wait for retirement:-)
@@matthewstonesax 4-5 hours a day, perhaps less.. but "makin something intersting" cannot come without playing first on the harmony, knowing the "souding" notes. That's why singers , like Sinatra and many others, are perfect on the melody, and avoid to try something improvised; the musical approach in impro is totaly different. It seems clear that you learned by yourself, the way you slide the Bb key on left hand and keep the finger on G sharp key show that you hadn't professionnal teacher, but you sound good. If someday you'll ask a teacher how to improvise, it will perhaps be the worst day of your life; pick up master's solo, Bird, Rollins, Brecker, Coltrane and others, to understand the different way to do it, on the blues, on 6 or 8 keys, at any tempo, same on more than one undred jazz standarts. Anyway, when you post, people like you do, that's the main thing in an artistic project. More than 1 million views on "Cry me a river", who can say the same?
Pascal Thouvenin you read my mind! I have had a few improv lessons but they left me cold, only now, after a few years am I starting to copy phrasing and recognising a few bebop scales when I listen to the players I love. It’s hard because being self taught my fingers don’t fly over rarely used scales. Thank you for the constructive criticism and knowledgeable input, I’m hoping not to lose the “lyrical” side of my playing, but you have spotted the reason why I don’t post much now...I need to woodshed for a while or it’s just more of the same.

Very good job, Matthew! I like the way you play with the melody - and with the audience's expectations.
Matthew has an exquisite sensitivity when playing.
