Freddie knew he was dying at this point. Can you imagine the strength it took for him to sing those heartbreaking lyrics? What a man! What a remarkable human being! The loss of Freddie is still a blow to me after all these years
One of my favorite Queen songs. Freddie's voice on this song literally blew this song out of the water, and it's lyrics just tear at my heart when I think about what he was going through at the time. Freddie and Queen will always be one of my favorite bands.
This last period of Freddies life is the fundamental reason why to me Freddie Mercury is my biggest influence in life. To have the courage to face something tragic and horrible as he did but without any whining or complaing but instead a lot of bravery and dignity is remarkable. He didnt had to make music at this point of hif but he wanted to do it and on top he didnt shy away to adress it in his songs. Lets be honest death is part of life and Freddie accepted it, made his peace with it and dealt with it on his terms. Thas is something that I am very much admire about Freddie Mercury.
Freddie was dying when Brian wrote this song for him. Brian said in some interviews that they never talked about Freddie's illness or anything - one day Freddie just asked all the band members to come to his house and said "'Look, you've probably figured out what I'm dealing with. I have this thing, and as far as I know there's no cure and I only have a certain amount of time left. I want life to carry on exactly as it is, I want to make records, I don't want anyone to know, I don't want anyone to talk about it from this point forwards and that's it". So they never talked about it. But Freddie kept asking Brian to "write me stuff, i will sing. I will sing and you can finish it off after i'm gone". And this song ("Show must go on") is Brian's attempt to show what Freddie was thinking and feeling during that time.
About the line "my make-up may be flaking but my smile still stays on" - Roger said that in later videos Freddie had to wear a lot of make-up becuase of Kaposi sarcoma lesions on his face, and it was agony for him to walk because of the wound on his left foot, but he never complained, never showed pain, and always smiled.
Haven't heard any other performance of this song that comes anywhere near Freddie's. He gave true life and meaning to it with his brilliant, passionate vocals like no one else can. There is a reason why so many singers try to sing this - and that reason is Freddie.
Brian thought he was too ill to sing it, Freddie got mad, downed a few shots of vodka and told Brian, “ I’ll do it darling”, Brian commented, he went out and lacerated that vocal”
This song is very suspenseful and dramatic. The lyrics are soulful and beautiful. And great reaction HAP. I’m glad you rewinded in places to get all the lyrics!!! 🌻🌻🌻. Freddie still sounds great to me!! I get emotional over “Days of Our Lives” also. He was very sick in that video.
I’ve always loved this song I think it’s some of queens best work. Although I couldn’t watch or hear this song for years after Freddie Mercury‘s death. Thank you for sharing your reaction with us HAP3 it was great as always.😃👍✌️🌼Love and peace.
Fanatic reaction! And thanks for reacting to the lyrics video in this case, the video for this song is usually to distracting for first time viewers. This is one of those songs that many people have covered, of course it can never be as great as the original, Freddie's voice was quite amazing for this last Queen album. This is quite a difficult song to sing. The most difficult aspect about this song is the pronunciation. It is very difficult to sing full words in full chest so high consistently. There is also a lot of closed vows which makes your voice switch into mixed voice or head voice. Freddie resisted switching over, and his pronunciation remained perfect. A lot of people cover this song because they see it as victorious song such as We Are The Champions, this song is not We Are The Champions 2.0. The Show Must Go On, is not a song about overcoming your obstacles, or to keep on going because you will win in the end. It is actually a song of acceptance about what it to come. The song basically says that you cannot escape what is coming, death is inevitable. You have to look carefully into the words of the song. There is somewhat of a dissolute feeling to the verses as if there is really nothing left to live for. It feels somewhat disconnect but there is also a feeling of acceptance for the situation. "Another heartache, another failed romance, does anyone know what we a living for?" He has basically already gone through most human experiences in his life, without finding much purpose, but he has experienced it all. Words such as "I'll soon be turning around the corner now." That is Freddie saying that he will soon be turning over in his own grave. "Outside the dawn is breaking, but inside the dark I am aching to be free." The sun rises every morning for most people, but for Freddie inside, the situation is becoming more difficult, so difficult that he might almost wish he was dead already. Death is freedom here. He is somewhat angry that everyone just continues to live through each day, without much effort. He basically has this one last task to do before he dies, it will take great pain, grit and effort, and it will not change anything about his situation in the end. I think people do miss that this song is more about the acceptance of death or something that we cannot change, then about some triumphant victory song. At this stage in Freddie's life he had completely accepted what was in store for him, he was just happy to have more time to record, this song is basically Brian and the rest of the band that still has to accept what is coming in the future, they needed to come too terms with the situation. This was a hard time for Brian May, it wasn't just Freddie, his father was also dying. He had to accept the fact that his life would be forever changed and that these people that are close to him may soon be dead. I have seen many covers of this song, with great singers, but they are never able to really capture the emotion of the song. I started to realize that they couldn't capture the emotion of the song, because most people perform this song as if it is some sort of a great victory, were you are striving above your circumstances to reach a goal. It makes the song feel really empty, when it is performed in such as fashion. This song practically goes through the 5 stages of grief, it is a grieving song.
Another great song from this album, with fantastic vocals is Don't Try So Hard th-cam.com/video/b7kUc5RcMqc/w-d-xo.html.
@HAP3SPEAKZ Thanks! You are always so kind! I will have Freddie’s best live filmed performances up in a day or two. It is really task to narrow these performances down.
My favorite Queen song. Possibly even my top 5 favorite of ANY song actually. Imo his vocals are at his best here. Amazing how he could sound like that when he was so sick. ❤ The "I'll soon be turning round the corner now" line always gets me.
IMO The show must go on and Mother Love are Freddies best vocals . Mother love is one to wait for later on down the track though as it was Freddies last ever recorded song. Both these songs give me goosebumps. Amazing how a dying man has so much power. Love and miss him everyday.
@@deeyears3978 Yes Brian and Roger recorded Made in Heaven after Freddie died with Freddie's pre-recorded vocals, but Mother Love was also Freddie's last-ever vocal performance. Brian then finished the last verse many years later.
This is one of the most gorgeous songs I've heard in my life, probably it's in my top 5. It always gets me. I also think that Freddie learnt a couple of tricks from Montserrat Caballé which helped him to sing beautifully until the end. Loved your reaction! Please, react to Mustapha and Back Chat; they're different flavours of Queen.
Such a powerful song ,makes me cry to know what freddie was feeling and going threw, so strong, miss you freddie ,he may not have wanted to talk what he was going threw to anyone, but he did threw his songs, you just felt it.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
This is a masterpiece! The voice, the harmonies, the instruments... ALL! Please, react to "Princes of the Universe" by A kind of magic album. The song is part of the Highlander soundtrack.
We are also grateful that you added this to a collection, like to go back to listening to it from time to time. It is so interesting when you heard a song million times during your life- the words come out automatically and you are watching somebody who is still getting familiar with it. I keep forgetting how new the Queen world for you is. 🙂 Majestic song, sweet reactions! 😘
HAP3SPEAKZ If only- you could listen to songs of your choices once in a while! We both know it is not possible right now or in the near future 😂 with all the requests you get...
@@HAP3SPEAKZ for reaction I highly recommend the lyric video. The official video wasn't made by Queen. All oficial videos for Made in Heaven album weren't made by Queen. They gave permission to some students (I don't remember what they studied and where). The official video for Mother love is for me very strange and ruin the song (in my opinion). And I have seen reactors interpretated the song based on that video.
This song is in the top ten of my Queen playlist. Possibly even top five. I have too many favorites to try to put them in any kind of order. Every time I hear a Queen song I want to put it on repeat. Thanks for your insight.
I know what you mean about it sounding familiar. To me it sounds like a blend of the opening of "I want to Break Free" and "Innuendo". Such beautiful vocals from Freddie.
the video shows clips of his concerts and other videos, the song was recorded in 1990, released in Oct 1991 and Freddie died in Nov just 24 hours after he told his fans of his illness, In May 91 Freddie did a video called These are the days of our lives, it's hard to watch, you can see how sick he was. If you get a chance you should watch it
Great Reaction! So Jane Matthews in the Comments already said what I would say rn so I'll leave it at that. But aside from the Story behind the song and what happened, I now go onto stuff where Freddie is just amazing. 6:32 the ''Living Foooooorrrr'' That is just fantastic what random Vocal abilities Freddie still has even when he didn't feel anything near Good. Also the same with the Word ''Smile'' at 7:31. There are many more parts, those were just examples. Now to my Favorite parts of the Song. At 8:06 The way he sings '' I can Fly '' is just too Powerful. To think that he could mean that he is dead and can fly as an angle, I mean every interpretation is there and you could feel it in your heart because of the power of his Voice there. Now to my FAVORITE part of the song. The whole line at 8:22. But the '' *OOOOON* with the Showwwwwwww '' is my most most favorite part, probably not only mine but of many people. Because. This is a really special one. He hits the note D5 there which is a High note BUT it is not that high. It's like a Low High note. But it doesn't matter how high or whatever. It is just the Power, the Strength, the Manliness and most importantly THE LOVE AND DETERMINATION of that man, that stuck with in that Part. He hit that so flawlessly when Feeling so bad and barely could even stand up, Brian said he had to lean on the mixing desk thing to try to kind of stand a little. But as badass as Freddie is he just says '' I'll fucking do it darling '' and drinking some Vodka to it. So damn amazing it always blows my mind ❤ that's why he is my favorite singer and a Huge inspiration for me. He did it for the Love of his fans and for his own will if you say so. Also this part 5:25 is pretty sad. Because In German '' turning around the corner '' is another way to say that '' I will die ''. Anyways Yea this is my Favorite Queen song. Even though I know they have many underrated songs that are too Good, still Show Must Go On will be my favorite because of it's story, the power of Freddie's singing in here AND the Song still sounds Good. Yep
Love this song it is yet another brilliant composition to Queens list. I think the reason it sounds familiar is the instrumentation from the song Innuendo is similar. 👏 Awesome reaction Hap❣️🙏😍💥
Freddie approached the end of his life - with 45! - and he knew that. His body was deteriorating, and there still was no cure found for AIDS. So many of his friends died already. This song seems to be almost like an outlook to nobody knows what. Yes, the show has to go on, as long as possible. And then...
If I had to name one Queen favourite song, it would be this! I'm so glad you took the lyrics video, because the official video is just out of snippets of old material, and I think it's heavily distracting. To me, Queen went up onto another level with this song. And yes, it's on the radio, it was the last song in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, there are cover versions. It's quite well known, although it didn't chart high, when it came out first. So please take a look into Angelina's and Dimash's versions next....
Brian is the one who wrote the song, he obviously wrote it with Freddie mind but it is his own feelings that comes through in this song. At this stage Freddie had already fully accepted that he was dying. This a song where Brian May is coming to terms with that fact, it was not just the fact that Freddie was dying he was obviously also losing a part of career. It was a big loss for band obviously and their future.
Btw I don't know if the person who suggested this song to you told you this story, but they weren't sure if he could sing and Freddie said "I'll fucking do it, darling", downed some vodka and just killed it 💕
I think this amazing song is a real challenge for new artists and a showcase for any voice that can hit those notes, but there are so many reasons why the original by Freddie and Queen can never be matched. It's more than copying the notes, the instrumentation, and the vocal gymnastics. It is Freddie and Queen''s story. That comes through very powerfully in this performance. But kudos to all who try. Very few artists out there attempt a Queen cover.
I do remember that .... I was in the stadium at the tribute concert ... i was crying and felt a bit ashamed ... trying to figure out where i could hide i saw that everybody was crying around me ... a deep memory i'll never forget!
There is no video to this song because Freddie died before one could be made. Freddie was very ill but still wanted to make music. Towards the afternoon of this day Freddie had told Brian that he was much too tired and needed to go home to rest but assured him he would be back first thing in the morning to finish. Freddie never returned. He died during the night. Brian would later finish the song and hoped he did Freddie justice. The song was never played in public until QUEEN put together a concert in honor of Freddie. RIP FREDDIE 11/24/91
The show must go on was recorded sometime in 1990, around a year before Freddie died. Freddie’s last work in the studio with Brian was “mother love” which he said he was not up to finish and would come back….and he never did hence Brian had to sing last verse. That was May 1991…6 months before he died…around the same time that he recorded his last video - these are the days of our lives. Freddie did no work in studio after May 1991 as he was too ill to
This is almost a better mix of musical styles than Bohemian Rhapsody. It's almost more equally rock and opera whereas BoRhap is rock with a smidge of opera. By the way, I've been dying before and it's much easier to just waste away and fight the disease, so I will always admire Freddie's spirit in this song more than some others.
He didn’t actually do this in one take (despite the rumor!), but that doesn’t take anything away! He couldn’t stand and sing so was propped against the recording studio table and it’s absolutely amazing that he recorded what may be some of his most impressive vocals when he was so ill. This one always gets to me and is my absolute favorite. We can all learn something from his spirit and attitude.
Actually I have real problem to listen this song. His voice is so perfect and we know all what was happening. Every time the emotion got me and I have to stop listening. This time is no different. Thank you to make people who doesn't know it to hear it. And of course the beautiful voice of Freddie. But I don't forget the orchestration and in the end we can hear some echo, a repeat.
Freddie knew he was dying at this point. Can you imagine the strength it took for him to sing those heartbreaking lyrics? What a man! What a remarkable human being! The loss of Freddie is still a blow to me after all these years

One of Brian’s masterpieces. No more to say.😢

Brian said in some interviews that they never talked about Freddie's illness or anything - one day Freddie just asked all the band members to come to his house and said "'Look, you've probably figured out what I'm dealing with. Thanks for listening!! Well, I actually thought it was more of the "I want it all" vibe mixed in with the Innuendo kind of lyrics ( double meaning).

HAP3SPEAKZ you got a good ear.🙂
Outstanding song, and extraordinary reacts!
I had never checked the Lyrics and sound in such detail the way you are helping us get!
Btw I don't know if the person who suggested this song to you told you this story, but they weren't sure if he could sing and Freddie said "I'll fucking do it, darling", downed some vodka and just killed it 💕
Yes it was, if you can go check the original comment- you would find that remark there. So yeah again, please go check that out. The link was given at the start of the video. It is a very detailed comment and indicates information unknown to many Queen fans themselves.

Amazing comment! thank you.

Beautiful and unbearably sad at the same time. But there’s still more to come...
Amazing performance by Freddie Mercury and the group.. Most songs he wrote has some meaning.
Elton John, sang it at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert
I do remember that .... I was in the stadium at the tribute concert ... i was crying and felt a bit ashamed ... trying to figure out where i could hide i saw that everybody was crying around me ... a deep memory i'll never forget!
The power of music.

@@HAP3SPEAKZ true words!
Freddie did no work in studio after May 1991 as he was too ill to
You should watch the video for this, this is when Freddie was battling HIV, BUT CONTINUED TO WORK, It’s from the Innuendo album
Yes I shall. Thank you.

@@HAP3SPEAKZ the video is great it's bunch of Queen videos from the 80s to the 90s
Angelina Jordan did a cover, there is only one Freddie but the angel did it justice. Waiting for your reactions to it❤️👍
It shall arrive in time. I promise.

You recognize that tune cause it's also the opening to Innuendo.
Angelina sings "The Show Most Go On" find it for us. Is really good.
Please listen to Angelina's version of this very sad but beautiful version, it is really very beautiful. Enjoy your reactions. God. Bless.
Already done in 2020, 21st July :-)

He didn’t actually do this in one take (despite the rumor!), but that doesn’t take anything away! He couldn’t stand and sing so was propped against the recording studio table and it’s absolutely amazing that he recorded what may be some of his most impressive vocals when he was so ill. This one always gets to me and is my absolute favorite. We can all learn something from his spirit and attitude.
very elegantly put thank you Lauren. Well one take or not, he really gave this one his all. What a song and what a feeling you get from it.

@@HAP3SPEAKZ He did all of the high notes in one take.
He could'nt stand partially because he was missing part of his foot, that and Being so it.
