I can share my experience with you. I went out of Kerala after my plus two. There I understood how severe was my language problem. It was 30 yrs ago, no mobile, no internet. I decided to learn english. First step was stop reading Malayalam completely. Then I started reading children story book first keeping a dictionary with me. After that I started children's story book series like Famous Five, Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew etc. always checked dictionary whenever I got stuck at new words. Then I started translating English books into Malayalam, then translated the same back to English. It really helped me. Now you young people have the advantage of internet and mobile. Even now whenever I see a new word, I immediately check the same in Google translator
