A CLASSIC! Saw him many times back in the day! Several times with Rockpile opening for Elvis. But the best performance was him and Elvis with just their guitars (no band) at Boston College Arena sometime in the late '80s. Just two singer-songwriters and their songs, stripped down and unfiltered.
Great to hear Nick Lowe again, going through my old Albums & came across this , how much he's growing (music wise) over the years has opened up some great stuff from him &Wilco to mention one of many . keep it up Nick 👍🤹♂️
I've listened to a lot of music in my life, but Nick Lowe has slipped under my radar. I just found a copy of this Lp in a Goodwill of all places, for a dollar. Gold embossed promo copy stamped in upper left corner on the back of the jacket. I understand there was an album sleeve with artwork, etc, but there wasn't a sleeve at all. The jacket is split on all sides, but, for a dollar, I'll be happy if it plays well. I cleaned it up, and have yet to put it on. I'm listening to it here for the first time.
One of the few cases (maybe the only one) where I prefer the US version over the UK version (although I think Jesus of Cool is better title). "So it Goes" is a much stronger starting cut than "Music for Money." I also prefer the studio version of "Heart of the City" over the indulgent live version on "Jesus of Cool." I also prefer energetic "They Call it Rock" to the sluggish "Shake and Pop" (basically the same song).
gabejpope just FYI you've credited Billy Joel for writing So It Goes but his is a different version. Nick Lowe's is written by the performer, the Impossible Bird himself. :)
Wore out the groves on this one. Never lent this one out. We used to name all the musicians the cover was impersonating. From top left: Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, John Denver?, Lou Reed, ???

On my top ten albums of all time for sure.
Went into listening this really enjoying This Year’s Model. Gotta say this is a great album

Great cover the back is hilarious. The character playing the double neck is so funny.
I remember Nick description of " heavy pop" at that time...pretty much equaled what I loved at the time...Power Pop forever!
This has a lot of The Boys are Back in Town about it. And everything else. 😁
thanks for this. super album

Totally agreed! And not forgetting the inclusion of 'Roller's Show' on the superior U.S. version.
Thanks for this. The British version was called The Jesus of Cool and had a slightly different track listing.

"So it goes" also a refrain from a story by Kurt Vonnegut.

He's not aiming the satire at anyone in particular, he's just having a shot at the generic types of musicians. I love the dude with the double neck.
A snake bit person- yeah Lowe.

Steve Nieve: piano on 'Breaking Glass'?
sounds a lot like those magic fingers!
I think it was Graham Parker’s Rumour playing on that, from memory, I’ll have a google.
Bob Andrews on piano, he played with Nick In The Brinsleys too. I agree though it could be Steve.
