This book definitelly felt like I was sitting with Hoid (and maybe eating stew, or something else warm and delicious) next to a fireplace and he was telling me this story of a time he got cursed! I LOVED it. It made me really emotional, and I loved Hoid's serious passages on various topics because they hit hard, and it still makes me emotional to talk about this book. It was perfect. (Also I'm glad I went into it without prior knowledge and discovered everything in order too, it was such a delightful experience!)
Tress was the first Sanderson book I read ever, really the only book I read in the past 10+ years on my own volition. From a friend's recommendation, was able to read it at the start of the year, and since became a massive Cosmere fan. Since then reading Mistborn Era 1, Stormlight 1 & 2, Warbreaker, some of the arcanum unbounded novellas, Sp 2 & 3 also. Right now planning to finish Stormlight 3 & 4, dawnshard, and elantris before SP4! Tress was easily my gateway drug into this fantastical universe, and I cannot put these books down. I thank it for sparking my joy for reading for the first time in my life!
I'm glad you ended up loving it!! That was the same experience I had, I didn't really have any expectations going in and was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this
I have never read anything by Sanderson, but I was really curious about the beautiful cover. Seafaring adventure with a female lead taking charge of her life and story that is inspired by The Princess Bride. One of the best books and movies of all time. And it's a stand-alone, so I don't have to get into a series. I might have to check this one out.
I believe Sanderson explained in the book that they just get their water from the rain, which travels in predictable patterns outside the Midnight Sea. So islands probably just have cisterns protected by silver to catch the runoff and store for later. And larger landmasses would have more or less similar geography to the real world, though I’m sure their river deltas are interesting.
Can’t wait to see your review of Secret Project 2. Tress was good and fun, but not my favorite of his. There is rain though. We see a couple instances of it. Great review! -T
Great video! As a kid I vaguely remember reading a short story in one of my English textbooks (or must’ve been another language) about a ship sailing through a misty desert. I wish I remembered what it was called. The characters had no idea the ‘ocean’ wasn’t water, which in fact were the tears of the moons. At the end it’s revealed they were inside a bottle the whole time. It was a strange story but Tress reminds me of it. I grew up in a culture where folktales, myths, and short stories were part of our Languages curriculum so the premise of Tress sounds very familiar.
Nice review! I didn’t mesh at all with the charm Sanderson went for on this one and ended up DNFing around 30% in. Hoping one of the 4 projects is a hit with me 😅
That's understandable! I can definitely see how the humor/charm of this one won't work for everyone, and there were even parts that didn't really work for me either but I still enjoyed it overall. Hope you enjoy some of the other secret projects! 😀
I didn't like reading the book and struggled with it for some reason, but I got the dramatized audio and fell in love. Got my husband listening too, now he is a Sanderson fan like me.
Oh, and I'm reading my first "ever" Brandon Sanderson book because of your reviews Mr J... the first book in the Stormlight Archive! Which is good that you're having such an impact; bad, if I don't like it because I intend to forge my own personal 'Shardblade' and embark on a killing spree, riding upon my Charger of Death - a shopping trolley I'll steal from Tesco's... insert your supermarket of choice? Nothing to worry about then.
I have been meaning to read Brandon Sandersons work for a long time but always had more stuff further up my TBR. I recently got a copy of this book at B&N and it was my first Sanderson read. I honestly loved every minute of it, which makes me excited to read more of his work even though I know not all of his work has the "cozy" vibe I got from this book. His writing style is just phenomenal and I can't read to explore the Cosmere
This just popped up in my recs so here I am 😁 I've just started reading Sanderson for the first time with Mistborn (only read the first book so far, but enjoyed it) & Tress sounds really up my street! Whimsy, animal companions, cute but thoughtful, found family, Princess Bride vibes, interesting world, fun story = that's me sold! 📚💰🐀
Brandon talked about the water outside of the book, but even in the book they mention they come from DEEP wells. Also, it DOES rain in ToTES, it's kind of one of the big plot points in the story? Essentially, Brandon said that the magical process of the activated spores "decomposing" is crucial to the water cycle.
Ahhh my bad, you're right! Somehow those points slipped my mind since I read this a few months back. I didn't know Sanderson talked about the water outside the book though, very interesting!
13:11 "The more meteorologically inclined among you might be wondering about the planets weather patterns and water cycle. If your one of those to whom these things are extremely important, you have my sympathies. Its never too late to develop a personality, maybe go to a party. But try to avoid topics like weather patterns and water cycles. Unless of course you can do it like me" -Hoid Rain falls in small localized ribbons. These vibrant lines of water weave like serpents in the sky. Rain brings death and life hand in hand - fitting company for the gods.
It's my favourite Sanderson novel, and it's not even close. I just love the overall vibe and the main perspective. He's on a roll ! After The Lost Metal blew me away, I wasn't ready to get hyped so soon after and for wildly different reasons.
Last year i would not have understood "...sometimes you just need something a little bit more light." Then I reached Wheel of Time book 8. This book is a blessing
Great review :)! I ended up reading Tress of the Emerald Sea right after finishing Red Seas under Red Skies, which was bad planning on my part. Too much seafaring in a row 😅
I love Sanderson. Iv read almost all his books . This books was not even close to his A game. Sanderson has been able to flood me with emotion through words . This book was a flat tire
It definitely rains on this world and isn't a "dry world." In fact, that is one of the most terrifying things in this world, because when it rains the spores cause immense destruction. I also don't remember Sanderson ever saying it was dry in the narrative. I'm not entirely sure why you thought the world was dry.
Warning, the Frugal Wizard is super different, not bad, but it doesn't even slightly read or feel like a Sanderson book, but still, it's a good read, just not what a lot of people are gonna expect.
Tress was such a great read, this and secret project 3 were the ones I was most looking forward to so it has been a good start to the year of Sanderson
I always think Sanderson's prose is unobtrusive, which I personally love because it makes it all about the story. Hoid (as Wit anyway) is my all-time favourite fantasy character
Sanderson has said many times in the past that he intentionally makes his prose unobtrusive so that readers can focus on the characters and story. It is very deliberate on his part, and a lot of the people who criticize him for it just don’t seem to understand that it’s a stylistic choice not a failing on his part.
No magic system annex (about Spores of Lumar in this case) is such a waste. I’ve become acustomed of reading through additional pages that explain how the investiture of this particular world works. I liked the story though , but yeah Brandon showed only 5 out of 12 spores and only 3 seas. I get that Tress not travelingmuch has no experience with other seas, but Hoid narating it could tell a lot more about Lumar. 😢
Mistborn references: -We saw Roseite in The Lost Metal being “used” by Twinsoul. -Ulaam is a Kandra, he is even mentioned once in The Lost Metal -Hoid mentions that he is a Worldbringer, who were kind of the scadrian version of the Worldsingers. (Or maybe they are the Rosharan version of the Worldbringers) -Hoid mentions Sazed and says that he released the Kandras. This might be a reference to Era 3 or 4, since we have not seen him doing that in Era 2. -Tress herself mentions Death with nails in his eyes, which is a reference to Marsh/Ironeyes. -Ulaam says that Father invented the scalpels. I am fairly sure that here he is referring to the Lord Ruler, since he was Kandra’s “Father”, but since they also called Vin “Mother”, he might be referring to Sazed, as their new “Father”. I lean more towards the Lord Ruler, though. -Hoid says “A Push for every Pull, an old adversary of mine always says.” being a clear reference to Kelsier.
@@CapturedInWords wow I’ve only read the original trilogy and alloy of law, I didn’t even know there were more out! Gonna have to handle that and give Tress a reread, thank you!
I was pretty disappointed in the book. The mechanics of the spores and curses seemed way overly specific and complicated, and didn't have much pay off. Hoids comedy got old pretty quick for me.
I haven't read it yet, but from your summary it doesn't sound like Charlie actually does anything? I'm sure he does *something*, but so does Buttercup. I'm just saying, it would be kinda funny if Sanderson tried to "fix" the Princess Bride, only to recreate it with a gender swapper protagonist.

If you want to go truly beyond, also do the white sands graphic novels
Tress is a surprisingly AWESOME read. I went in without great expectations and ended up loving it.

You've become my favorite channel after Daniel Greene has shifted content type!
Honestly, same.
same here!
@@mdrafiakhtar577 Very nice to see other people with the same experience!
What did Daniel Greene change?
Daniel doesn’t really do book reviews as much anymore. A lot of manga stuff gets mixed in too. I really am enjoying this channel more these days.
I got big Princess Bride vibes from this, and having the whole thing done in Hoid POV was a blast.
It was a lot of fun!!
Can’t wait to see your review of Secret Project 2.

I read this book not knowing anything about the Cosmere and I absolutely LOVED IT!

Thank you for your review! I'm finally going to binge read it this weekend!
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it!!
Will you be doing an in depth summary for WoR and Oathbringer? The Way of Kings video was one of the best I’ve ever seen.
This might be my favorite book by Sanderson. Just a delight from beginning to end for me.
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it! It's such a great book 😀

A shardbearer riding a mighty stead, the great and powerful Tesco's shopping trolley! Hahaha you paint a great image. Hope you enjoy The Way of Kings!

Captured in Words : 'familiar face in the cosmere is narrating the story'
Me : Mmm.... must be Hoid 😂
*edited*
oh wow it really WAS Hoid

Always excited to have another video even though I've yet to read any Sanderson.😄 Loving the channel👍
Thank you, I'm happy to hear you enjoy the channel! 😀
Excited to check this out. Backed the kickstarter and got them in audiobook form.
You should do an in-depth summary of Tress with Cosmere connections
Last year i would not have understood "...sometimes you just need something a little bit more light."
Then I reached Wheel of Time book 8.
This book is a blessing
You convinced me, I am going to buy it.
I think/hope SP3 will have a lot of good Hoid narration too. I'm really excited for that one!
That was cool, adding the bit on fluidization
Great review :)!
I ended up reading Tress of the Emerald Sea right after finishing Red Seas under Red Skies, which was bad planning on my part. Too much seafaring in a row 😅
I love Sanderson. Iv read almost all his books . This books was not even close to his A game. Sanderson has been able to flood me with emotion through words . This book was a flat tire
I really enjoyed this book, its like Brandos take on a whimsical Neil Gaiman-esque story. (And Hoid had me laughing quite a bit😂)
It definitely rains on this world and isn't a "dry world." In fact, that is one of the most terrifying things in this world, because when it rains the spores cause immense destruction. I also don't remember Sanderson ever saying it was dry in the narrative. I'm not entirely sure why you thought the world was dry.
I’m so excited to read this book!
BS has said the spores sink and decompose over time and that reintroduces water to the system
Yeah it sounds like a fairly decent read. I dunno if i'll be able to get to it anytime soon though.
I will say, it is worth a read for a little Easter egg in stormlight.
Perfect time. Because I only started reading Tress like a few days ago myself.
Awesome!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
I recently started a Starfinder campaign and I decided my character will refer to most of the Skittermander crew as Dougs
Maybe there're water spores, like the air spores.
Warning, the Frugal Wizard is super different, not bad, but it doesn't even slightly read or feel like a Sanderson book, but still, it's a good read, just not what a lot of people are gonna expect.
Loved Tress! Secret Project 3 is going to be so exciting 👀
I can't wait!!!
What is the background music he uses in these videos?
I haven’t read it yet. I have it on my kindle. It’s on my tbr after I finish a few books. :)

OH MY GOSH WHAT WERE THE MISTBORN EASTER EGGS???
Mistborn references:
-We saw Roseite in The Lost Metal being “used” by Twinsoul.

Charlie is more active in the story too, but there's a big spoiler involved so i didn't want to mention anything about his journey in my review
Did… did you just say, BRANDO SANDO 💀☠️
I did and I don't regret it 😈
3rd
It's Sanderson trying to write like Neil Gaiman.
It's not that great.
So u didn’t like the book?
4th
You said “No spoilers”!!!!! Lies at minute 3!!
Is there anyone else that didn’t like this book? Have we read the same book cause I’m not enjoying it so far, and I’m 2/3 done
Brandon Sanderson has the time to accommodate a wife? Really?🥴
I read it 3 times as of now
1st?

May be first comment???
