Much respect to Mr Cogan, he does a hard job curating a collection that many less informed people are highly critical of, given the limited access. As he has posted on facebook: urge your elected officials to push for more funding for the collection.

Do you think "elected officials" pay for this? Sorry, not a worthwhile expenditure for forcibly extracted money from the citizens.

'Ole Henry', the M4A3E8 that shows up around the 25 minute mark; I crewed that tank during the Patton Museum's yearly July 4th military display on Fort Knox back in 1992. I was the bow-gunner. Great tank. Our driver for that day was an actual Sherman driver from World War II. Nice guy. Another member of our crew that day was Dean Klefman, who consulted on Hans Halberstad's book 'Inside The Great Tanks'. What a privilege, and an incredible experience.

Nice to see this place open. Was at Ft. Benning for the Sullivan Cup Tank Gunnery competition some years back and the equipment was in a big yard where they had moved it after transporting it from Ft. Knox where the Armor Center used to be. Good job all and by the way the Sheridan is the M551, I had three of them in my Armored Cavalry platoon in 1968. Good job ma'am. Nice to see a pretty lady who enjoys tanks. You either love them or hate them and I am in the love them category enjoying every minute I spent in them over the years.

    Great video Sofi !
FYI, when I was in "Yugoslav" army in 2000/2001, in brigade I was in we still had a mixed anti armor regiment that had a few of those re-engined M36's, and older officers were very very fond of those TD's/SPG's, praising the guns as extremely accurate and devastating... :)

I just had the opportunity to view this collection yesterday (8/23/19) and talk at length with Mr Cogan at length about the collection and the evolution of the Sherman as a platform. It was fascinating and I learned a lot from not only Mr Cogan but also looking at the tanks side-by-side n person. I hope someday soon the rest of the collection will be available for viewing; seeing all these pieces of history in person is a priceless experience.

I have a new appreciation of the Sherman. Was not aware that super tough Shermans were designed to lead tank columns to take heavy punishment from things like Tigers... great tour... a lot of tank fans go weak kneed over German tech (who doesn’t love a Jagdpanzer IV) but US tanks from 1919 to late war Shermans shows excellent practical engineering and development... exactly the reverse of Germany from 1939 to panic designs like the Panther II and Maus.

  • @2Quietus

Riveted for the length of the vid. I'm fascinated with WWII as a time-frame for much of the reasons explained in the evolution of just the Sherman: The technological advances were extremely rapid and addressed direct feedback from the troops using it. This mentality was spread throughout all advances, be it tanks, aircraft, warships, and general grunt gear as WELL as advances in theoreticals at the time;e.g. V2, Atom bomb, helicopters, etc, that proved to be possible.
Good job on the vid and major props to the curator for knowing his tank history (why he's curator I reckon haha).

As someone that served as both a 19 echo and 19 kilo, I am glad to see that the tradition of armor is being taught to our soldiers in their training. When I went through my AIT at Fort Knox we were taken to the Patton Museum and then we watched the movie Patton as well at the museum. Glad to see a fresh voice out there evangelizing tanks and armored vehicles here on TH-cam.

“...some units, especially the 4th Armored Division converted to 37MM...” [ 11:37].
He then immediately corrected in the next few sentences by stating: “...all ya have to do is unscrew the 75mm barrel and screw on the ‘76mm’ barrel....”

16:12 That's Cindy! She was the first tank I ever rode in. I operated the bow machinegun during one of the 4th of July events at the Patton Museum years ago. I am so glad to know she did not get put out to pasture.
We also took her, an M3 halftrack and what I think was an M20 armored car (A turretless variant of the M8 Greyhound.) to a Boy Scout camping event. On the way back, Cindy had a malfunction of the starboard side brakes and swerved off the road. I was up in the M20's ring looking back to be sure civilian cars were not getting too close and turned around just in time to see Cindy go rolling off into the grass. The driver got her to stop and everything was looking good. That's when things went sideways, almost literally.
Cindy had come to a stop at the top of an embankment above a stream. The embankment gave way and over she went. It looked like it was happening in slow motion and we could hear the two crew inside her yelling. The halftrack had already taken off. They had no idea anything was wrong. The driver of the M20 did not hesitate. He pulled off the road and we all three bailed out. I somehow had the presence of mind to grab the fire extinguisher and pass it off to one of the other guys and then someone said to run for help so I sprinted up the road towards Richardson motor pool where all the operational vehicles were kept. Anyway, I only had about a hundred yards to run before an ammunition convoy came along and I flagged them down. I told the officer what was going on and he gave me a ride to the motor pool and called emergency services. Thankfully, the guys inside Cindy only got knocked around. No serious injuries. Worst part was Cindy's gun tube snapped off. That surprised me until I was informed the weapon had been demilled when Cindy was given to the museum. It was welded back on, but there was a dip in the barrel if you looked for it.
I am pretty sure the M2 Stewart with the yellow star and stripe was featured in Radcliff, KY's "Golden Armor Festival" parade every year up until the early 1990s. I can't be sure because more than one Stewart has to have those same markings.
As for the last vehicle in this video, the M36, I recall when she first came to the museum. I have to say she looks a hell of a lot better now with the OD paintjob. That spall damage on her bow was evident, even in the dim confines of the old garage where she was stored. I recall the volunteer director taking some small delight in showing me the severed cord of the radio handset saying it was a bad day for that crew.
Lots of good memories. Thanks for these videos!

I always thought that it's called a M36B1 if the Jackson turret is mounted on a sherman chassis...
Edit: I just realized it is the standard Jackson based on the M10

As Chips noted down below, it's the basic M36 based on a reconditioned M10 hull, not one of the 200 or so M36B1 that have the M36's turret on a Sherman hull. But yes, WoT does need to put the M36B1 into the game.

This is one of the best explanations of the Sherman that I have watched! Great job! I do have question. At the beginning of WWII the Thunderbolt had an engine that had 2000 HP. Why wasn't it used in tanks? Too big? Not enough of them? Couldn't be cooled down? It seems HP was always a concern. The Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp would had had tons of HP.

    • @paulmanson253
      @paulmanson253 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think one answer is the sophisticated nature of the engine, with scarce materials needed like tungsten(USSR and S Africa main ore sources,I think). There are 3 turbines in the exhaust with a silicon oil based(I think) fluid coupling returning horsepower to the crankshaft. Aviation mechanics, clean workroom etc.needed to properly service and repair, complete with specialized training. And loads of spare parts.
With the single row radial,(7 not 9 cylinders I think),more room for air movement, cooling that is,and a kid off a farm with tractors had sufficient ability to unscrew the major bits. More importantly, screw them back together. Successfully.
Changing out a 4 row radial, and remember 28×2=56 spark plugs every tuneup,is a big difference in weight and complexity. I forget the mandatory major service time for these engines, not that different in ground vs non aviation use. Far from a trivial issue. And lastly, fuel consumption.
Read about the limited use of the Corsair F2G with the 4000 plus cubic inch engines.USN use. Oh and differences in octane needed. The high octane(160 I think) was poisonous to breath fumes and skin contact with liquid. Bad news vs 80 or 100 octane aviation spirit.
Best or least bad choice available for mass production of thousands of vehicles.

in 1940 when the Lee was starting, and the Sherman was designed, the Thunderbolt was ALSO under development, and aircraft had priority on the engines. alos, probably both size and cooling would have been a concern.

Iv got a picture if myself at 4, standing on a M4 in Ft Mclellan I think.Mabe Ft Camble not sure but I call it my 1st Tank. At 9, I got to play on tanks up in Aberdeen proving grounds A M24 was my favorite but I got to play after hours In T34s PZ III and IVs They had several the Panther. I was to short to climb onto a Crusader was another favourite. I see them in pictures online and they are like old friends and just think wow.I had a heckuva childhood. Thanks again for the video I live a short drive North of Benning so yep yep looks like a drive 185 S or 280 S. This Summer When they have a open house

@@stevevernon1978 I was talking about the M4 shed at Benning. I wasnt ever at Ft Knox. The one at A.P was my favorite by far. My Dad a SSgt with 8th Infantry chemical Corps One of his Good Friends from Vietnam was over the Armored displays. Their up keep. So I was let off my leash lol I never feel like kids have it better play ground wise when at Micky Dees these days. Because I got to play on Tanks. While playing WOT and WOT Blitz I had been drawn to the Crusader. I saw a picture of A.P. and right there on the outside row was The Crusader. I remember climbing up and my shoe slipped and I drug my shin down the tracks edge. They also have Anzio Annie there. Lord that's one huge rail gun. In WWI and WWII The Army and Navy battle ships fired at targets over and on the Finger or peninsula That in modern days became the spot where our housing units were. We fed deer popcorn from our hands they ran in huge herds. I was quite young and the bucks having no fear of humans. When in rut were very scary as they towered over my little butt I ran around the corner of a unit one evening and right into 4 or 5 This huge buck blew pawed the ground and I had to dive into a thick privet hedge
As the buck tore at it. Luckily I went through it and was between the hedge and building I belly crawled to the corner and ran fast as my little legs would carry me. I miss the Chesapeake Bay and the Blue crabs we caught by the 25 gallon trash can chicken necks string and a long dip net. Skippers Point was the name of the area we lived. Best Childhood a Kid could ask for
