Man, I got a chill when Essek proposed so pointedly to Caleb that a beacon could be used to somehow rewrite the past. I had this same feeling when they discovered Halas' incomplete transformation spell. It was like something thought out of reach was suddenly very possible for Caleb. If there's anyone who could find out how to change time, it would be the Shadowgast ship. I recently rewatched a Talks Machina (episode 70-something) where Liam admitted that Caleb readily knows changing his past would also prevent him from ever meeting the Nein, and that he is deeply conflicted over his own goals. And now Essek has something he wants to fix, and could act a drive for Caleb to change the past, while his dedication to the Nein will challenge it. FUN TIMES AHEAD FOR THE SAD WIZARD!
Um... There are VERY powerful entities in charge of keeping the timestream or w/e you want to call it safe. @@blablubb4553 the nine eyes by my theory are a conglomerate of mages going insane for all time in the astral sea becoming the "dream" a beholder has when they come into existence.
Here's the thing: Caleb could potentially accomplish his mission and remain with the Mighty Nein via time travel, but it would require precision and absolutely nothing going wrong with the plan. So it's very unlikely that would happen.
Let's not start shipping the player characters with a war criminal who is indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands in his search for knowledge. The shipping community is already extreme enough as it is.
The problem with that is that when the crew sees it, they will purposely go counter to it to keep the mystery. But I would love to see Ashley as a bard and Liam as a fighter
My interpretation was he was just telling Essek to give himself, the Nein and Celeb time to heal and grow after the revelation in 97. That making up and moving past a mistake as big and awful as that takes a lot of time (in game it's only been a few weeks to a month and a bit at most since the peace negotiations). It's impossible to excuse someone, friend or not, for committing war crimes overnight, if that makes sense?
It's a double meaning. On one hand, he is telling Essek that it will take time for the others to forgive him and it will take time to forgive himself. But Essek also mentioned time-based magics earlier in the episode. He implied that he could use it to go back and fix his mistakes, which is something Caleb would also want to do to bring back his parents. So when Caleb says "Time. Time. It takes time." he may be showing a mutual excitement.
He said something he would say about himself. They have a lot in common, more so than any other pair of PC and NPC's, and it makes sense for him to say that. And he's not wrong either. What he said didn't mean that essek was a bad person inside, but that the guilt and shame wouldn't go away so easily. Just like Caleb was like in the beginning. Knowing how bad Caleb dealt with it after disguising his dark part from himself and others he cared for, he would know that hiding or suppressing it would cause more harm than good.
@@JacobGrim Agreed. And I think he could also mean that the spell could only change the body, not the spirit or mind that the Assembly is ultimately hunting.
Liam clarified on Twitter that Caleb meant it as commiseration, not condemnation. He's just saying "I know guilt well enough to know that changing how you look won't change what's going on inside."

Why do people want ShadowGast so much? Essek is a literal war crimianl, a bad guy, he now regrets it? too late buddy, you killed a lot of inocent people. "But he is so hot" is not really an argument :/ Essek should be in prision and the 9 are now accomplice because they didn't turn him in
I like shadowgast because i like how his and calebs stories sort of parallel, i dont just ship it because esseks "a hot boi" and i dont overlook the terrible things hes done just because i want my ship to happen. My hope for essek is that he finds a way to somehow make up for all the terrible stuff he did and redeem himself, much like caleb has(not that caleb did anything nearly as bad). I ship it because it feel like caleb is looking at himself and praying he can be better and essek seems to have found his humanity in his relationship with the nien. I like the character and the dynamic.
This is why you don't belong here, in this community. Caleb murdered his own innocent parents but you don't go around saying he should be put in prison. Neo in the matrix kills hundreds of innocent people but you don't hate him. Same goes for Gamora, Prince Zuko (to a lesser extent, but he still wanted to kill a kid), and pretty much most villains turned good. And one more thing: Who are you to say he's too late? Being remorseful and acting on it doesn't mean he's innocent of his crimes, but it means he is redeemed (Literally every villain turned good). To think he's innocent is moronic, but to think he cannot be redeemed is just as moronic.
@@JacobGrim Because people already died? Also Caleb was brain washed, Zuko was a kid (he has like 16, he wants to impress his dad), Neo idk I didn't see the movie, Gamora was in prison and then was forgiven after achiving an incredible feat. It looks like people want Caleb to end with Essek just to fill the LGBT+ bingo card. Also, who are you to decide who does and doesn't belong in the community?
I like that it's complicated. Essek is an awful person. Caleb was an awful person. Together they have the potential to be better or worse. Ultimately, it would be fantastic if they helped eachother be better and that seems like that's the direction it's heading. Essek should take responsibility for his actions, but the only way he's going to is if he changes. Personally, I would rather see him grow morals like Caleb did instead of the Mighty Nien tossing him in prison and calling it done. Because lets be honest that doesn't help the grieving families. What does help is a powerful wizard who wants to make amends. That's just my take on it.
I have never shipped 2 male characters in my entire life. But In my mind I thought Caleb and easel were in a way possibly interested in eachother. I had no idea that Caleb even like jester until I watched talks. Also just because Caleb and essek share a lot of the same goals an etc doesn’t mean they have to be gay. I’ve had completely straight loving friendships like that. But it seems like Matt is going to introduce a possible redemption arc with Astrid. And just maybe.
