As an IU alum, Straight No Chaser was my real introduction to a cappella. There's actually still a group on campus, but they had to rename to Another Round (fun legal stuff about competitions). A lot of the current touring group is still original, and when someone retires they pull from the ranks of alums. The original group had actually all gone their separate ways after graduation, but when TH-cam became a thing one of the guys (Randy - Bass) uploaded this video. The CEO of Atlantic Records saw it, loved it, and signed them.
And yes, everything is alcohol-related, because college humor. Even the album names are alcohol-related (Christmas Cheers, Holiday Spirits, Under the Influenece, etc.).

There are so many great songs! They are my favorite live concert I've been to (was supposed to see Home Free this past Spring, but COVID). They're actually doing some livestream holiday shows starting next week, with "tickets" going for like $20 (sncmusic.com/tour).

This is the Straight No Chaser video that got me hooked on the group about ten years ago. I got such a kick out of watching your reaction - it was so similar to my own! They are so much fun. And yes, they have changed this song up over the years - repeatedly - and every version is hysterical. But a really cool thing about SNC is that humor is not their only strong suit. They can perform absolutely beautiful pieces, and they can even dance.
The arrangement of The Twelve Days of Christmas on which they based their performance was originally created in the 1950s by a fellow named Richard Gregory. Versions of it were performed on college campuses into the 1970s. SNC gave it their own twist by using "Africa," their version of which was one of their fans' favorites, for the twelfth day.

FYI - this song is an adaptation of a song from the Williton Caterwalers (another collegiate a capella group) arranged by Richard "Dick" C. Gregory. If you go to the WillistonNorthampton YT channel you can see a version of Dick Gregory directing a version at a reunion.

Indiana University has one of the best music schools in the country, the Jacobs School of Music. This is why you see the terrific craftsmanship of the arrangement. I went to IU myself, and many friends of mine were able to get into Jacobs either for voice or instruments.

I think they stayed together, or reconvened a few years later. I also recommend their “Christmas Can-Can.” 💃🏻😂
They are still together - or actually, came back together after ten years and *that* group is still together - still recording, still touring. They've had a few personnel changes over the years, but they still have a lot of the original members, and every line-up is great. If you ever get a chance to see them live, do so!

The '98 guys got back together and got a record deal, which is what you see for the 2008 version. But, this is the group that I got my intro to acapella with, like some of the others responding here.

Since then I’ve seen them live (they still do put on a fantastic show) and I was able to meet a few of them when they came backstage to meet a female barbershop chorus called Jersey Sound” which my sister is in. You guys are super talented and they were so nice to meet in person. SNC is an outstanding and incredibly talented group. Reminds me of a group I was in back in high school. We had an awesome arranger but SNC takes it to another level.
What you may not realize that drives this song home even more is the premise. What this doesn’t show (and I’ll see if I can find the video that does) is the setup. The idea is that they have a new arrangement but haven’t had time to perfect it and have it memorized, so if you don’t mind they have sheet music. Then one of the guys comes out with the sheet music, but he’s in a hurry, trips, and the sheet music goes everywhere. Everyone is frustrated and angry and rushes to get the music picked up. But ... it’s all out of order. Thus when they start to sing different guys have the music in different places ... and it jumps the tracks. The rest ... is what you hear.
Dude! Straight No Chaser is HEAVY on my Christmas playlist and has been for years! (And yes, I am older than you! lol) They truly are a talented group of men. You should watch the do The Christmas Can-Can! Too much fun! But they have a lot of videos/songs out there! It's lots of fun!

I have loved SNC and seen them in person twice. Along with the Christmas Can Can, I would recommend the Nutcracker.
Very funny can't wait for the next one. I had heard of them but I had never heard them. A real treat. If I'm wrong and I have heard them before, I didn't know it was them. Just found another Dan Mirabal Christmas song "When They Ring Those Golden Bells". Also check out The Piano Guys "Angels We Have Heard on High", you've never seen a piano played like this before. I was wrong, I have heard Straight No Chaser's "Christmas Can Can" on the radio a few times.
I love Straight No Chaser, and their Christmas music in particular is great - for two completely contrasting pieces, try their Mary Did You Know and the Christmas Can-Can.
I also hope you might do some the Hound + the Fox - We Three Kings and The Christmas Song with Tim and Chance respectively, but also What Child Is This/Friend of the Poor or their Little Drummer Boy.
Their version of Mary Did You Know to me is the definitive version of the song.
All their CD's have an alcohol reference.

I love this group. I was listening to them way before Pentatonix or Home Free. These guys can be very funny on some of their shows, very talented with so many different performances. Too bad most of the youtube videos are from audience recordings and poor quality.
I've never heard them do it any other way. It's their trademark.

As a new subscriber I have found myself losing sleep watching your reactions!! As for this video, there is actually another version of this before SNC version by a barbershop quarter that is similar, but with some twists...maybe give it a shot.
