First time Jia gave a genuine compliment. I think everyone was taken aback by Hailan after she dolled up and she looked so pretty and bright they were pleased but just looking at her.
如果說如懿傳裡 最有腦袋 最聰明 下手最狠 最人間清醒的絕對是海蘭，做事果斷不拖泥帶水，要不是她愛的是如懿，所以事事都為如懿著想才沒那麼狠，不然她要爭皇貴妃或皇后之位也不是不可能（只是門第出身低了一些）
hailan is one of my favourite characters. she came from humble beginning and make the most of her situation. she never flaunts her new arrival - she kept her brilliant mind hidden under modest garb. and she's loyal too, never betraying ruyi even when she lost fsvour
Hailan is brave and smart, not trapped by love, I really like her! !

I always thought this was so clever of Hailan, to keep up her skill and pull out her knowledge for something so important. One of her best moments. And Li Yu whispering to get the other embroidery girls out of the room, because he too knew a best moment when he saw it.

Because if Emperor summoned any ladies, they will be naked after bath, can't wear any clothes. It can prevent assassination, if someone hide weapon inside.

I believe it's because historically there was a concubine who tried to assassinate an emperor after he 'visited' her, so in this period concubines were made to strip completely - both clothing and any jewellery / adornments that could be used as weapons etc. - and were fully checked over, then rolled up in a rug and transferred to the bed chamber directly to reduce the risk to the emperor.

@@thisisme2476 Unlike many of the other concubines, Hailan did not come from the nobility. She was an embroidery maid that the then Crown Prince took advantage of while drunk. Though she got promoted to Noble Lady, she DID NOT CARE so much about her new status: she did not wear nail guards, her clothes were always plain, and even her jewels were not so grand. She even never stopped working, and she is seen sewing up stuff for herself and her close friend Ruyi. It was during the "doll-up" scene that she started to "step up" and embrace her new self as a noble, and her wearing of that nail guard even if her nails are still not long is very symbolic of this transformation. I hope this explains it. :P
