New Zealand Winter Road Trip: Milford Sound

- The next leg of our road trip takes us from Queenstown to the spectacular Milford Sound and one of the most amazing roads we've been on. We find a stunning campsite at Milford and even get up close to some of our native birds.
A couple of middle-aged Kiwis travelling the world by plane, train and motorhome. The kids left home and so did we! We’re not professionals, we’re not experts, we just like to record what we see and do. Enjoy!

My one regret, is never having made it to visit New Zealand. Beautiful country.
We have a motor home from brownhills taking it to Scotland next month.

NZ in on my bucketlist..just need to save more to have a budget for travelling
It's a great place but a long way from anywhere and it is quite expensive!

Many thanks! We get snow in the lower South Island and also in the central North Island when it gets really cold. Other than that the weather here is generally pretty mild :)

Absolutely beautiful, We did Milford Sound and some other Sounds on a cruise ship we took from Australia, every place we stopped we said we would have to come back to and do a road trip, outstanding ablution block never stayed at anything like that, once again an informative and well structured video A+ to you both 👍✔✔👌

Lovely video, at least the snow was not like the Beast from the East you experienced in the UK last year, we did the Milford Mariner overnight on our February trip we saw Milford somd in it's full glory the following day, I uploaded the video yesterday 👍😄

Here in the UK we need the electric hook up to run the AC as the temperature is around 30C, soon be cold again. Last weekend it was 50/50 to run the heating! The scenery on your trip was spectacular but it looks as though the roads could get dangerous quite quickly.
There is a bit of a risk on the roads at times. Quite a few have been closed lately because of snow so we were lucky!

We have a compact suv, we are contemplating leaving queenstown around 5:30 am to make our cruise at 11. Is it safe to drive or just get a coach.

Hi there! Beautiful place and video 😄 My partner and I are planning on going to NZ next September and obviously visit Milford Sound. We'd like to rent a self contained camper van for our trip but we are a bit afraid of the road conditions in early September. Do you think it might be ok to drive there? We've read some people talking about avalanches, icy roads and stuff 😅 Hope you can help us a bit. Thank you so much! You have a new follower in Instagram as well ;-)
Thank you! September is the start of spring in NZ so the weather is getting warmer then. It can still be wet and snowy sometimes so you just have to check the weather forecasts. The road into Milford is spectacular and we were there in the middle of winter (July). We didn't have any problems but they did have a big snowfall the week after we were there :)
Hey Guys thanks for taking the time to share your adventure. Quick question for you is, is there places to freedom camp over night on that road to Milford Sound?
Hi there - sorry for the slow reply. We saw a lot of places where it looked like you could freedom camp pretty close to Milford. We didn't use them because it was the middle of winter and our van was freezing but had it been warmer we would have! Cheers

We stayed at the Milford Sound Lodge. It was a really beautiful spot!

Did you drive on snow road from queenstown to mildford?
There was one small patch of snow when we left Milford but other than that the road was clear :)
Did you not need snow chains on this drive?
Not for this one as there was only a little bit of snow.
