    Why does the system NOT require bleeding after installation of any new hardware?

      The system is self bleeding as long as there is enough fluid in the pump. The reason is, each hose on the cylinders serves either as supply line when moving the cylinder in one direction and then as return line when moving the cylinder in the other direction, or vice versa.

    Hi, I thought I was almost an expert with the Vario roof having owned a R170 for 8 years I have rebuilt all 5 hydraulic rams, replaced the pump and diagnosed a broken wire in the wiring loom to the microswitches that was causing the quarter windows not to operate.
    It is used regularly and has been working perfectly for a couple of years and now I have a new issue which lead me to your video.
    I have no power to the pump motor, the relay is good but no power to the pump not even at the 40 amp fuse. There is power to the boot lamp fuse but none heated rear window fuse either.
    I have checked all the fuses in the engine compartment.
    All I get is door and quarter window going down when button pushed back and go up when button pushed forwards.
    Button turns red when operated but none of the flashing or annoying beeping that I have experienced with previous problem.
    Can you please advise what the try next.

      If there is no power to the 40A fuse for the pump, then that is what you want to investigate. Ultimately, that power comes directly from the battery without any switches or modules in-between.

    Hi, I performed the test listed and the pump pulled 30A when deadheading as shown in the video, and only about 20A when attempting to unlatch the front cylinder. As the front cylinder was dripping slightly anyways and attempting to unlatch but lacking the pressure to do so I went ahead and purchased the front cylinder from top hydraulics. With the new cylinder my problem persists and the pump still only pulls 20A but will pull 30A when jumpered and deadheaded. Would you recommend purchasing the entire pump at this point?

    My top stopped opening and the headliner feels wet and smells like hydraulic oil. Any thoughts about what the issue may be?

      That would be a leak from the front lock cylinder

    Thank you for this very informative video, there is an oil leaking in the rear passenger side. The leak is near the front of the rear tire, Do you have any idea for this issue?

    Wow, that second sound where it's not working fully is exactly what mine sounds like! And I already had the front cylinder replaced when it failed.
    Is there any harm to leaving it?
    It's slow but it's not terrible. Actually, how fast is the R170 top supposed to take? I timed mine at 60 seconds.

      Your top is moving at about half the original speed now. I don't have the number memorized for how long it normally takes an R170 top, probably around 30 seconds. The fastest late model hard tops take about 18 seconds, the R230 SL top takes 22-30 seconds and my old Mercedes R129 SL takes 35 seconds.
      There is not normally any direct harm with procrastinating on the pump replacement, except that you create more sludge in the fluid from extended pump operation (not a big deal since the pump is going out, anyway) and that in some rare cases the electric motor can overheat if it is running too long. I doubt that you are currently causing harm, but it will get worse and you might be stuck having to finish the opening or closing cycle manually at some point. The pump failure is inevitable and you may want to plan ahead for the best time to tackle the pump replacement.

      Most likely, switches S69/7 or S69/8 are not indicating to the computer that the trunk lid is fully latched in the forward position. See th-cam.com/video/uXKSfLEPWgE/w-d-xo.html Try lubricating the latches first or see whether the weatherstripping on the trunk's rim is too tight.

    Help!!! I purchased a 2004 SLK, was not told about the roof lock leaking... ran down the fluid until the last time it closed it took forever and the red button got HOT. I performed the cylinder rebuild as seen in other videos and now when I retract the top, it does unlock, but that's all. The trunk never opens and the pump just keeps going until i let go of the button. No flashing light on button or anything else.
    Any ideas? Pump? Switches? I was wondering if air in the system, although I'm reading about self bleeding... I don't understand why it's not working anymore

      @@chuckymukuwa91 i has to rebuild the roof cylinder. It easily actually a fairly easy procedure. The o ring from amazon, a dremel, a pick… cleaned it up, put needles on ring, refilled fluid. Oh yeah, new headliner

    Hi! If the battery is not in perfect condition (it had to be charged once, but the car now starts without much struggle) can it affect the functioning of the pump while the car engine is running?

      If the alternator works, then you should be okay. The pump draws some 20A on average while the top is moving.

    Hi top hydraulics to ive been experementing with a mini r52 pump its used in many cars, can you tell me if they tent to have internal relif valves? Is there a port i can connect my pressure guage? Thanks for any help!

      Mini R52 pumps are used in Mini R52's only. They do have internal valves that fail, or the piston assembly can wear out. On a Mini, if the pump motor is running put the pump is struggling to move the top, then it's pretty much for sure the pump.     On my SLK R170 my Hydraulic level is 1inch below min level with roof shut, when operating the rook the boot lid opens but stalls at this point just when the roof mechanism should start its process, could this fault be due to low fluid levels in pump?

      We happened to have this meter in the shop and it was easy to film that way. If you need to buy an ammeter, then you may want to go with an inductive one that does not need any wiring - simply put it over one of the leads going to the motor (not both, or they will cancel each other out).

    Hi, i have problem about my hydraulic, whats the problem when i push switch to up, all the windows is down, i hear the relay sound ia click, but the hydraulic is no function , hydraulic no sound, i have replace all new 5 lid cylinder, i have refill the new hydraulic fluid. But until now i still thinking what the problem. After i replace all the lid cylinder, it can open normally about 20 times i think, but at last this week, it can't open it anymore. Can you tell me what the problem? Is it hydraulic pump is fault? May the hydraulic pump can fault? If yes, is it the pump can repair?

      Thanks for asking. If all your cylinders are from Top Hydraulics, then we can be practically certain that they are not causing the problem. New cylinders from Mercedes have a higher out of box failure than Top Hydraulics, but still negligible. You are saying that you hear the relay clicking in the rear. Is it the relay next top the pump? If so, then you have three possibilities:
      1) Bad contacts on the relay
      2) No power from the battery to the relay socket to be passed on to the pump (i.e., blown fuse)
      3) Bad pump
      To find out, try to bridge pins 30 and 87 and tell us what happens...

      @@H2pentertainmentbn The video shows how pins 30 and 87 get bridged. If you want to diagnose your pump, then please do as suggested and share your findings with us. You will need a wire of at least 16 gauge and identify pins 30 and 87 based on the numbers stamped under your relay.
