Rank and Dense Rank in MySQL - Important SQL Interview Question
In this video we will talk about how to use Rank function & Dense Rank function in SQL and its industry use case.
Remember -
We should be using the order by clause
We can also use the partition by - but its optional
the row number starts from 1 for every partition

Notes -
if there are no duplicates then row number, rank and dense rank lead to similar results..
only the difference comes when there are duplicates..
rank - for duplicates same rank is assigned and the for the next entry it skips the ranks..
dense rank - it does not skip any ranks in between
whenever you do not have duplicates use row_num
This is a very frequently asked SQL Interview question.

I have been learning SQL from quite a long time and have been working on and off using SQL, but this is the first time ever I have felt this confident in answering certain SQL questions and solving certain advanced queries. Must say this is one of the best but underrated SQL playlist. Thank you so much for this playlist, also if you can please make some videos on lead() and lag() and the group by extensions, that would be super helpful.
If professor have taught in this fashion, it could have saved a few years.

There are very less playlist that I complete from start to end and I must say this is one of those, Loved the content level and the way you describe examples and that to from basic I started this playlist for my revision perspective but got to know new methods and ways to write those query and the specially the Rank and Row_number methods are bit confusing but you did a great job, Who so ever is starting this playlist just go for it, If a begineer within a week you can complete this and if for revision in 3 days... but also do handson, again Thank you Sumit sir for this valulable playlist.
I was always confused with joins , group by and having clauses in my college days but your explainations has removed my confusions now i am feeling confident in mastering sql.

Nice lessons. Well put for beginners and nice refresher for the experienced.
Suggestions:
Please revisit select distinct with order by video. That definitely needs to be redone as it is not clearly explained.
Also, in this video instead of 3 sql queries showing 3 different outputs, it could be clubbed as different columns for even easier understanding.

Great learning through your SQL playlist. Approach is Very simple and with lots of practical examples but I made a mistake I thought I would get a link of your whole SQL playlist notes in the last video description and I continued watching it without making any notes and now when I completed it. the dense rank does the job of finding nth sal or any other similar query so what is the need of rank then??
are these topics required to be studied- stored procedures, views, triggers, index, CTEs, ?

recommendations: who cares about loading the data, the data doesn't matter, don't show it; use a proper IDE; no scrolling. You should be able to fit everything in one screen. You can comment out your notes in mysql workbench, show the complete query, and show the results below the query all in one screen. Otherwise great and thanks.

Well to answer your question ..this video is a part of SQL tutorial series and the word "tutorial" is meant to indicate that it is for people who don't know about what is being discussed in videos , I hope this answers your "nothing new part" as it was "new" for me before I watched this video. Now to answer your "why so much hype" part ..I would like to ask you who is creating a hype here ? do you see the creator of this video claiming this to be the best tutorial on TH-cam ? Most of the people who come here to see Sumit's videos is because we like the way he teaches and also because of his reputation from other courses that he offers. Venkat may be a champ but I simply don't relate with the way he teaches.
