Heartbreaking that Venice would allow cruise ships to even come close to the city. A cadre of local business people convinced the city that these ships would bring in lots of cash when the tourists swarmed ashore. In actual fact, passengers went back aboard the ships later in the day having spent a fraction of what was hoped for.

There is more to this story than just what you see in this particular video. While all this is happening the ship is actually being assisted by two tugs. You just don't see them in this video.
No, the captain was not drunk. They had an engine malfunction and the captain did what he could. E.g. they dropped the anchors but it was not enough to stop the boat.
For all those commenting about the captain.... FIRST OF ALL: a local captain boards the ship to steer it into the bay, also, one of the tuck boats' chains leading the ship in, had snapped. Which is why tje boat crashed into the dock last-minute. Which means the tug-boat on the opposite side was pulling the ship alone to one side. The engine also had a failure so these tug boats tried to slow down the ship, but the thrusts caused it to go faster, which is why the ship is arriving alarmingly quick to the dock. So here is for all you uncultured idiots who don't do their research :)
I totally agree Tatiana! And yes, boating is a culture. I drove an 85 foot long boat for 5 years and plan to go back to it. Nice to see that someone (Tatiana) actually paid full attention to the video and did their homework before just bashing the captain. If you haven't been around it, then you don't know what you don't know. 💯
Rule number 1 : it is impossible to prevent all risks. ( know as murphy's law). + they are not educated to prevent mechanical failures, but to be able to control the boat even if there is a failure. Think about it : a pilot ( airplane) have to land with a reactor in flames. Same here : you have no break for some unlucky reasons, how do you "land" safely ? See here : no dead, no injuried. minor damage on his own boat. That's definitely what we expected from him.
Just shows how little you know. A lot of things could have caused this. Problem with the controls emergency shut off for engines not working or even if they did traveling at 3 to 6 knots with 80.000 tons. Takes a lot to stop you. Please donr be so ignorant.

Look at other videos. It was a bad tug boat operator pulling the ship at full power and another at the stern pulling hard. The bow tug could have pulled port and aft. The tugs thought they had a gondola in stead of a floating city. Glad that it wasn't worse. Conspiracy note. The groups in the city have been fighting against large ships and maybe this accident was manufactured to help their cause

Good steering by the Captain to edge between the tourist boat and the wharf... Anything else would have surely outrightly sunk the smaller vessel sooner.
I don't think the ship even had propulsion so there was no steering this thing at that I know of...unless they had auxillary power to the forward stabilizers or whatever they're called.
