Teej Festival in Jaipur 2023 and other parts of the country is a 3-day celebration of the reunion of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva after a long penance served by Goddess Parvati. It is believed that she took 108 births before she united with Lord Shiva. Talk about dying in love. She actually did that.
Thankfully, you will not have to die 108 times to win a loving husband like Lord Shiva. All you gotta do is remember Goddess Parvati in your prayers on this day to be blessed with a devoted spouse. Married women celebrate this festival to seek the blessing of the almighty and eternalize their bond of marriage.
Teej festival is celebrated with great fanfare in many states of India which includes Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. The celebration style and conduct may differ a bit but the essence remains the same. Teej festival is also a huge deal in our neighboring country, Nepal. But, in Rajasthan, it is grander.
Teej festival of Rajasthan is a grand spectacle and you ought not to miss if you are in the Pink City. A royal procession of Teej Mata on an antique palanquin, called Teej Sawari, winds through the lanes of the city. There is a whole fanfare of dancers and band players who accompany the procession.
Teej festival in Jaipur is a three-day celebration and each day has its own significance. On the first day, Dar Khane Di, the married women enjoy the meal prepared by their husbands. The second day is the fasting day when the women neither drink nor eat all day long until they worship the full moon. The women take a special bath with red mud to absolve all their past sins. They gather around in fancy red clothes to narrate the traditional ‘Teej Katha’ and pray for their husband’s longevity. On the third day of Teej festival in Jaipur, the prayers and offerings are made to the deity.
