While yes we can be disappointed about the mini-tailspin at the end of the season it's important to remember how remarkable a season this has been. If you would told me this exact scenario at the start of the year I would take it no questions asked
BYU must prioritize retaining Jay Hill. His contributions to the program are invaluable, and the university should be willing to offer a competitive compensation package to ensure his continued presence. Aaron Roderick's offensive coordinator role is not without merit. However, his play-calling strategies could benefit from refinement. For instance, he should capitalize on successful plays and be more aggressive in decision-making. Ultimately, the offensive coordinator bears responsibility for the team's offensive performance. If the offensive struggles persist, a change may be necessary. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the Arizona State game, Jake. The officiating certainly played a role in the outcome, and it's unfortunate that crucial penalties were not called.
Same could be said for Jay Hill. 5 games this year with just one punt forced. Defense has relied on an unhealthy diet of turnovers, now proven as unsustainable. What has to be done to win on third and long? Nearly cost us the OK state game.
Everyone complaining does more for coaches leaving than staying same with player, when they see this crsp going on they don’t want this scrutiny about them and the Coaches they love
@@JeffGustin-s4x Nope not a troll. Just able to see past turnovers and understand that BYU has an efficient offense that struggles on third down and red zone touchdown efficiency. BYU gets a lot of criticism and frankly gets abused by fans throughout the country because of their affiliation. It is what is to be expected which is a marked difference from the action of BYU fans. Football needs to pony up more money like basketball. Give Jay Hill a long extension with a huge buyout, so if he does leave, we can financially benefit.
I love Jay Hill. IMO, moving to Utah State would be a step down. I know this is going to offend some people but USU is a stepping stone school. I’m 50 and I’ve seen it over the decades. That Charlie guy in the 90s, John L Smith, Anderson, Matt Wells, etc. There’s not much to gain in going back to the G5 level to beat up on no name schools when he has shown that he can coordinate a defense for a top 20 program at BYU. If anything Hill should be looking for another P4 school to coach rather than USU. But idk how much he’d want to leave considering his health scare this year as well as his wife’s health concerns. He’s got a real good thing going on in Provo right now. Being a coordinator at a great P4 school is better than being the HC at a G5 school, imo.
Jay Hill had a heart attack. If BYU offers a competitive package to keep him he will stick around and build for a few years. Not even his decision it’s Sarahs. Head Coaches don’t play call anymore. It’s strictly recruiting, NIL and managing. Coordinators know this more than anyone.
1st-$100k, 2nd-$250k 3rd+-500k fines. It was unreal to witness the ASU student body storming the field. I admire the BYU players and coaches for not fighting back with what was going on. The Memphis bowl game is the only game that even compares.
Fans getting upset when they lose and the other teams fans rush the field. Don't lose or, maybe your team should play better. Remember that time when byu fans rushed the field in 2011? The team Utah St, who had beaten byu the year before when they went 4-8. The year byu rushed the field vs them, they were 7-6. Asu rushed the field after two 3-9 seasons. Picked to finish dead last. Had just completed back to back wins over ranked ksu and byu. On homecoming. On senior day. On a day where they finished an undefeated season at home where they may have sealed a birth to the big12 title game and possibly a chance at the first ever 12 team playoffs. Yeah, I'll give em a pass. But I'll remind them to get ready for the next time they play Utah St too.
@@elche1976 You don't get a pass for what is essentially assault. Rushing the field is one thing. What happened at ASU is something above and beyond a run of the mill field rush.

I think you're on to something. Get in touch with the big12 and plead your case. I'm if you keep at it, you effectually see some headway. And we had no answer for Skattebo. And they outgained us. And controlled time of possession 35/25. And they had 2 takeaways to our 1. And our qb fotos throw accurately. But man oh man, that field rush. There has to be some way that can overturn all that to make my feelings not hurt so much. Yeah, lead with that. While you let the L marinate.
Too many people have the attitude of "oh we did better than we all thought, so oh well if we don't win out." We HAVE the talent to have won both these games we've lost. Stop making excuses for these coaches. A-Rod and to some extent Kalani have failed this team last two games to calling the right plays and to get these guys ready. That is on coaching. BYU players and fans deserve better then that. Please get rid or demote A-Rod or this culture of awful play calling and losing games at the end of the year will continue.
If you told me at the start of the season that BYU'd be at 9-2, I'd be giddy. Ecstatic. Elated. I'm all of those things. Sure, it sucks that they lost those games. Yes, I do think that some of those failures come down to coaching. But Kansas is playing out of their minds right now, and ASU isn't chump change. After an emotionally and physically draining game at Utah, I'm not shocked to see them drop both of these games. The fire A-rod thing has to stop. He's really done a nice job since he's been here, he doesn't deserve the same kind of slander Ilisa Tuiaki got, yet he's still getting it.
But the fundamental problem with your attitude is that it overshadows the 9 WINS that this staff strung together. The same staff that lost 2 in a row are the exact same that went 9 undefeated. Is it disappointing the way the season has ended? Yes it is and there is blame to be placed at the feet of coaches and players alike. But damnit man I didn't think we'd get to 5 wins this season; embrace the success that we have achieved.
Then you can continue to settle for mediocre then. Such a stupid take. A-rod has only done half his job. He's good at player development but BAD at play calling and game time decision making. ANY regular person that does only 50% of their job correctly would be fired. Also, quit acting like this is a new and only a "this year issue" that hasn't been plaguing this team for years. I can remember MANY times in the past several years fans have called to fire him for his very poor/questionable play calling. It has cost games which in turn, cost BYU seasons money etc.
@@peeporiot9948 NOTHING has been over shadowed. I'm pointing out that our teams come out flat footed two games in a row and its become a trend of BYU which IS a coaching issue. So saying 9 wins was good enough when this team very well could be 11-0 right now is just stupid. I wont blame the players till I see the coaching step up their game. From play calling to clock management to game time preparedness it has been a ridiculous last half of the season that I, and other fans are not going to settle for.
Jake, here is a question for Coach Kalani Sitake...Does BYU football prefer assistant coaches for preparing for the eventuality of becoming the head coach at BYU? Thinking succession planning at BYU football is important.
How’s that working out for Utah? Bombed this season and there has been zero benefit recruiting wise (they now have the 12th ranked recruiting class in the big 12). If your inferring that BYU should have jay hill in line as Kalanis successor that would just be funky. Both are 49 years old.
I dont understand this weird idea that one can't enjoy the season we've had given our 4.5 win projection and also see that ARod is absolutely a problem at OC. It's just bonkers that a subset of the fanbase thinks "We won 9 games when we were expected to win 4 or 5. Everything is awesome!". That simply is never going to be an intelligent take. ARod being questionable has been several years in the making. You are blind if you think he's been anything other than questionable in previous years. ARod needs to go, we've won despite his play calling and game planning. The scoring drought these last few games is his coaching, not Retzlaff's play. Some of you never watched Detmer throw 29 INTs his Heisman season and it shows. Before you get your panties in a wad, I'm not saying Retzlaff is Detmer, but give the kid a break. Detmer threw 42 TDs to 29 INTs in 1990. Retzlaff is at 20 TDs and 10 INTs this year. Can we please stop the bad takes that he is an INT machine? He's not. He's a good QB and your expectations are out of touch with reality if you think he's the problem and ARod isn't.
The offensive woes are due to both Arod and Retzlaff. The offensive line could be better. Yes, Detmer threw interceptions, but he could move the ball down the field at will, Retzlaff can't and will never be in Detmers class.. The defense is very good, except in quarters when it isn't. BYU probably won some games it shouldn't, and lost some games it shouldnt.
@@KirkTingey The play calling is absolutely different between the two QBs. Roger French wasn't calling East/West pass plays like ARod. It was routes in the flat and over the middle, but beyond the line of scrimmage. There were very few down field shots, if my memory serves. ARod's play calling hurts his QB and puts him in bad situations. Lots of 3rd and long. Lots of questionable sideways passes behind the line of scrimmage. The play calls are just mid AF. Retzlaff is doing really well considering the play calls he gets. Don't forget Detmer's INTs came against WAC teams, not Big XII teams, too. So you've got to factor that in. Anyway, the Retzlaff hate just absolutely kills me. He's a very passable QB that has been put in very questionable situations with the OC play calling and game planning. It's in vogue to crap on Retzlaff and defend ARod though. ARod is mid. Retzlaff is better than average, not great, but absolutely doesn't deserve all the blame.
