alright im an hour and 38 minutes in, gunna predict that the main character is a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist, thinking the soviets are after him. This entire game is a lie made up in his head from his deluded insanity caused by his superstitions. He brought the weird painting that made him anxious to the basement, than when he went back down there, it triggered his superstition of there being people following him, because the painting dated the 1800, they were all red dead looking zombies.

what im thinking is maybe that Adam has a delusion and personality disorder of some kind and the delusions convinced him that Nicholas and all the stuff in the 1800s were real and actually happened but in truth they didn't. Nicholas and the past things could be just something Adam made up and dont remember making it up, and the delusion, personality switches, and paranoia all convinced him that everything he believed was real. this game is absolutely perfect, though. it has everything you could possibly want in a game:)
