When you were chatting about why you liked I’m a Fan, I wanted to see if you’ve read If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English and hear your thoughts. So glad to see it made your list! It was in our top books of the year - such a beautiful yet hard-hitting novel that touches on colonialism in a way I resonate with. Thanks for sharing :) -Sierra
I saw I’m a Fan and If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English on bibliosophie’s favourites as well, definitely need to read both this year, and md and Sophie are reading East of Eden together as well!
ugh the cusk retelling of medea has been on my radar for so long, i need to get my hands on it in 2024! i think beloved will be the next morrison i pick up 🤨 so many books on your list that i’m looking forward to picking up!! i hope 2024 is awesome for you, can’t wait to follow along with your content!!
I’m A Fan = also one my top reads of ‘23. Read Beloved years ago & having read The Bluest Eye first, it was further confirmation Morrison’s a master of her craft. 📖🪱💚
I found your channel this year and I am so glad!! Sorry, the background music was a bit loud and distracting in this video 😓 but can’t wait for another year of fun reading! 😊
Thanks for the feedback, my hearing isn’t great and sometimes the music doesn’t seem as loud when I’m editing the vids but yes I can see how it’s distracting.
A great list! I have to check out East of Eden and How to Loiter in a Turf War. I read a lot of great books in 2023, but a standout is the Neapolitan quartet. I read three out of the four and plan to finish the fourth one this month. I also really loved Foster by Claire Keegan.
I just picked up a couple of Claire Keegan’s today, not Foster but I will give that a good if I enjoy her other two. Ahhhh the Neapolitan quartet is close to my heart. 💜
Loved! I read East of Eden in the last bit of December after seeing your reading vlog earlier this year, and it stuck with me when you said it has succession vibes 😅 safe to say i absolutely loved it! My top 2023 read was also a lovely bit of local NZ fiction called Lonely Asian Woman by Sharon Lam! It's bizarre, funny, and a little relatable haha
thanks so much for recommending how to loiter in a turf war. my goal for this year is to reconnect with my mums side and read more māori lit, so i'll def try that one this year. my fav read of 2023 was probably bandit queens by parini schroff - super funny revenge story about a woman in rural india helping her neighbours get revenge on their abusive husbands but with so many twists - i loved it
first off, love the dress! secondly, I'm chuffed to see so many of my own favs of this year and years past in this list. thirdly, I'm looking forward to reading east of eden this year in part bc I watched yr trajectory thru it. fourthly, I bought how to loiter in a turf war on yr recommendation months and months ago, and this is a very good reminder that I want to get to it! happy new year! 💖
Aahhhh you’ve made my day to know you purchased how to loiter!!!! I also recommend the audiobook, read by the author. It would really help for anyone unfamiliar with pasifika/māori humour. It seems like faves are shared amongst a few people this year. Happy reading in 2024 Sophie!!
Such a good list-thank you for sharing! I immediately requested that my library order a copy of "How to loiter...." Of my favorites from 2023, the one I'd recommend is Orbital, by Samantha Harvey. It's a quiet book about the inner lives of astronauts as they go about their mundane routines aboard the ISS and how they're affected by the ever-present face of the Earth-representing all of humanity-out their windows.
What a champ! And thanks for that rec, I love this time of year as everyone shares their top reads, I like the sound of Orbital, sounds a bit like the Olga Ravn, so will defs give it a go.
Ok Im embarassed that I didnt know the employees was a sci-fi?!? And yessss. Honestly the Baby Suggs scene in the meadow is one of the most chilling things Ive ever experienced in a book. Now that I think of it, the most memorable scenes Ive encountered are often in Morrisons lol. You had such an incredible reading year! Def picking Carver and Ravyn. Cant wait to see what you're picking up in 2024! (Fae smut aside 😂)
Maybe I’m being loose with the word sci-fi but anything set in space is considered a sci-fi to me. 😂😂 I love the way Morrison lets her most shocking scenes play out like it ain’t nothing, it’s truly disturbing and I love it.
a bangin list!!! had the great pleasure of reading Lucy with you and still, she is a character i often most think about in my 2023 reading. bringing her energy into 2024!!! >:) spoiler alert: the Patel is ending up in my top ten too!!! just loved the way it captured being online so accurately??? usually i roll my eyes whenever social media is fictionalized, but here, it felt too damn real. and eep!!! the number one pick!!! will be in my reading for 2024 for sure. wishing you a sexy reading year in 2024 bb!!!
Haven’t read too many internet/social media novels but I’m a Fan just did it for me. Looking forward to seeing your top reads. HNY and reading in 2024 Nathan. 💜
Oof what a solid list despite the fact you felt yourself in a reading slump for so many months. I need my grubby hands on that cusk madea. I demanded my library obtain a copy of turf war. I wanna reread the steinbeck! Not too shabby 2023. Very excited for your 2024 vids and updates, Renée! Hny! 🪩🍾💋
I think I did really well despite the massive dip I had, and I still read some fantastic books. Love hearing people requesting turf war through their libraries, enjoy. Looking forward to more from you in 2024. Happy New Year Yena.

Hmmm I never thought about the connection between those two books, thank you.

Ahh can see how that could be difficult! The December reads video is much better though 😊
Loved 'Whereabouts'

Added Medea to my cart! Not only do I love Euripides, but I also love retellings in general, excited to read it!
Love it! I’m looking for reading the original this year.
@@r.enee.morris oh man you’re going to enjoy it! ( I think lol)

Awww that’s so cool. This book is a great piece of contemporary māori literature, I hope you love it. That book sounds great.

I hope Coco Solid’s book comes out in Canada! Sounds very interesting.
So do I! 🤞🏽🤞🏽

loved it! maybe i need to give the fraud another go!
Try the audiobook, Zadie reads it herself. Does quite bad Irish accent but not a bad Scottish one.

Your dress 🥹🥹
Thank you, she’s a true favourite and so seemed fitting for this video.
