    He didn't drop her, she dropped him. She started the chase, she caught her quarry, then let him know it was all about the game. The song is about him nursing his wounded heart.

      You are on point. It is about unrequited love. When you are just chemically crazy in love with someone, but they are just using you. They love the attention that you give them and the control they have over you. They start using you and don't really show you any respect. It hurts so bad because you start to see that they don't love you because of the way that they treat you. The only thing you can do is leave even though it hurts so badly. It is really hard to do, but eventually you will leave and then cry for like 6 months straight. Then you move on.

    Back in the early 80's, my mom loved Neil Diamond and she use to play the album 'The Jazz Singer' all the time when I was getting ready for school. I was totally burned out on it then as a 10 year old kid but now I love it at 52 years old and I still have that album my mom owned back then sitting in my record collection 💯

    He’s saying that they try so hard to get you, and then when the chase is over and he’s put his all into it they don’t want you anymore. There’s a movie called the Jazz Singer which this song is from. Great movie. I be.ie e this was done in the 80’s. He is so iconic. My parents listened to him all the time when I was growing up. He was a
    So great in concert.

    In 1990 this was the first concert I took my wife to, we weren't married yet she was 19 I was 24... I think we are probably the youngest ones at the concert... I wasn't sure if this was going to be the last time he toured so I paid big dollars to get fantastic seats right up close... He did his show in the round which means he had a round stage in the middle of the venue that rotated. It was around Christmas time and he took a half hour out in the middle of the concert just sing Christmas and Hanukkah songs... Definitely a show I'll never forget.

    Wow, this song still hits hard. Definitely of one Neil's most timeless and beautiful songs. Love it!!! Asia, the title is a metaphor. His love is on the rocks and he's drinking his way through his pain. He didn't leave her, she left him "Suddenly you find you're out there walking in a storm. And when they know they have you, then they really HAVE you."

    One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Sweet Caroline", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". One of my favorites is "I Am, I Said" which is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.

    He just means he’s “got to get away” and mourn; to cry. He did not run from her. He’s walking in the storm in distress. She one hundred percent made him fall for her, then she left him flat to wander alone in the storm. Wanting a smile is just wanting a little bit of kindness with his drink in the bar. Try the duet, You don’t bring me flowers, with Barbara Streisand, and the rest of the Jazz Singer album.

    I just went through these lyrics in real life..18 years with someone without her and I being married (neither one of us wanted the paperwork aspect),she got family genetic health crisis and hated the world for it.... and then me. Told me to leave..so I did. This was not my " first rodeo" I am happier now away from her anger and she will never be. Life goes on people, change is good sometimes. Women, I just wish more of you would really know what you want in life... because I don't know anymore. I give up. Peace.

  • @FeaturingRob
    @FeaturingRob ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This song was written for the one and only time Neil Diamond tried his hand at acting in a film. He starred in 'The Jazz Singer' in 1980, and it was the third remake of the story. It was the first film to have sound in 1927, and then there was a remake in the 1950s. A young Cantor in his synagogue dreams of making his living as a singer of his own music, and against the wishes of his father as the family has been Cantors for many generations, singing the songs of the Jewish faith every sabbath and high holy day. When he goes for his dream...drama ensues. Neil played Jess Robin (aka Yusel Robinovich), British acting legend Lord Laurence Olivier played his father, and Lucie Arnaz (daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez) played Molly, the woman he falls for as she helps his career. The film was not well received and even won Diamond a Razzie for Worst Actor. Also, the film has not aged well with one particular scene possibly being triggering as racist. But the soundtrack filled with amazing songs by Diamond was a huge success. I have a lot of nostalgia for the movie and love it. Songs also from the soundtrack: "Hello Again", "Summerlove", "You Baby Baby", "Hey Louise", and "Songs of Life"...all of the soundtrack is amazing, but those are my favorites.
    Recently, a jukebox musical called 'A Beautiful Noise' opened on Broadway on December 4th, based on Neil's life and using his music with mostly positive reviews...we'll see in May (?) if it gets any Tony nominations.

  • @SweetThing
    @SweetThing ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is a song of many from the movie "The Jazz Singer" year: 1980; Neil Diamond wrote all his songs in the movie and even starred in it. I don't know why they called it "the Jazz Singer"; I don't think any songs in the movie were jazz at all. Awesome songs in this movie. "Hello Again", "Summertime" and "America". The meaning of the song: "Lyrically, it tells the story of a man who has just gone through a break-up and is trying to cope with the pain and loneliness. He sings of how love can be like a glass of whiskey, strong and intoxicating, but also like a rock, cold and hard."

    I may be wrong but I think what he’s saying is they tell you how much they love you and they want & need you in their life so you finally give in, drop your guard and fall hard for them and as soon as they realize that they have you they lose interest. They weren’t in love after all. Just wanting something they didn’t have. When he says you need to get away it’s because you’ve truly fallen in love and there can be nothing but pain if you stay and no chance of healing your pain until you completely remove yourself from the source of your pain. I dunno, I could be way out in left field with my comprehension of the song.
    I think this is one of the songs from the soundtrack of The Jazz Singer, which he starred in.

In context of the movie (remake of The Jazz Singer) it is different, but I think in general, once you are hooked and the other person is kind of on the fence (or out), it's too late. You need to getaway from this, protect your heart, but it's too late. Get out before you're blind-sided I guess? Neil Diamond can make singing the phone book sound good!

    I always took the meaning more in the music industry/celebrity vein. The agents chase the talent, then when the contract is signed they take advantage & wring the heart out of you till there’s nothing left to give, then throw you away. But certainly it works as a heartbroken melody also.

    Neil Diamond early Neil 1960's and 70's good songs. Love on the rocks, means the relationship is on shaky ground. I think his lover has lost that loving feeling not him. "First they say they need you, Eee how they really want you"....Anyway good song. Yes he's using word play "on the rocks".

    A crashing-and-burning relationship where one person feels the other claimed to love them just to ensnare them, then used and abused them. Neil Diamond just hits harder in mid-life crises! :D

    Love this guys music. Saw him in concert so many times , he is such a performer. He recently retired due to having Parkinsons. This song is all about believing someone loves you, giving into them, and then for them the game is over and they walk. The storm is the emotions that come with the break up and the song is the story behind the relationship, the rocks refers to the love going cold and the drink is the lie that was the relationship.
