@@abbycossette128 In this context or composition Religious is an irrelevant subject is it not They story goes as it goes, so the song also . There is a garden where he would sleep, where he first saw her,. She was like the dawn and they died miserably happy at a ripe old age . . . Having lived and loved and failing loves command they had to die...
It didn't occur to me that this was a religion based song until I read through the comments. I though it was simply a beautiful love song. Either way, even though I am not religious, this is still a beautiful song. Love in it's purest form.
The best religious songs don't present themselves as religious. When religion isn't the focus, but the addition, that's when it works. Everyone has SOMETHING they believe in. Science, God, nature, family, love... whatever it may be, it's connected by having faith in something.
This is about Adam meeting Eve for the first time, isn't it? "I was asleep in the garden when I saw you first, He put me deep under so He could work." God put Adam in deep sleep, took a rib from Adam and made Eve. This is such a cute take in the story.
This is second hand so feel free to double check, but the Hebrew word used in the book of genesis, when used in other parts of the Bible, is translated as side, rather than rib. So it may be, that God split Adam down the middle in a physical and or metaphorical sense, and fashioned half of him into Eve.
To me, this song describes the frailty of human love as it was experienced in the very first human relationship - and every one after that. Our beloved appears as the brightest shade of sunlight we've ever seen. We come alive at the delight of intimacy with someone made of the same stuff that we are. Finally, thank God, we are not alone in our being. Then, in most relationships, there is the painful separation, the fall from grace that follows. That line, 'And you will surely be the death of me, but how could I have known?' - that sends shivers up my spine. It's the saddest musical moment I think I've ever experienced. We've all felt the death of intimacy and the disappointment of taking our beloved down from the pedestal. The Adam and Eve story is an archetype - and this song is so powerful - because it flows through every one of us like blood. But that's why we need music like this - to give us the greater comfort of knowing that we all share this struggle for companionship and wholeness.
I think your missing a significant concept in Christian thought, which is the death of the self for the sake of being reborn to something much greater. Yes, the spouse will be the death of your current self. But you'll find new life in that union that's greater than anything you could have known alone.
Now what's all this we business? I'm an unlovable bastard and as such despite being 21 I had my first kiss like 3 weeks ago and then never saw the guy again
When I saw The Oh Hellos in concert they played this song and when the woman sang "and you will surely be the death of me" it was literally so beautiful....best concert experience I have ever had tbh
This is a phenomenal song. I know a lot of people are comparing it to Adam and Eve, but I wanted to note that there's almost a parallel between Christ and the Church--Jesus' side was stabbed while he was on the cross, and from his sacrifice, the Church was created, just like Eve was taken from Adam. And the line "You will surely be the death of me" really applies to Jesus and the Church too because he had to die for us!!!! I LOVE THIS SONG
Omg i hadn't really thought about those parallels, i specialy notice that Jesus got stabbed, i think it isn't clear exactly where (they only say it was on a side) but it looks like if it was on a rib or somewhere nearby i can see some kind of symbolism there. God made Eve out of Adan's rib and his son got stabbed around that area.
All the interpretations I am seeing are lovely and valid. Everyone experiences songs differently. But this one to me feels so intensely maternal. A mother to her perfect, newborn son, and that alchemical moment that shakes everything when you see new eyes.

I'm not religious, but my boyfriend is Christian, and I dedicate this song to him, and play it for him. I send it to him to let him know how much I love him.
I just realized that this song is about Adam and Eve and it's so cool! The garden is the garden of Eden. After God created Adam, He put him under a deep sleep while He removed his rib and made Eve from it. ("He put me deep, deep under so that he could work"-see Genesis 2:21.) When Adam saw Eve, he said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man" (Genesis 2:23). And then Eve ended up being the death of Adam because she ate the fruit and they were cast out and became mortal. Now when I listen to this song I find it even more beautiful because of the extra meaning.
Moments like these, after I have stumbled upon art like this, leave me speechless, the kind of speechless that makes you feel so many different emotions at once and you realize nothing is okay, it never was and you knew it all along.
I imagine this song to be sung by a woman who just lost the love of her life to war. They lived together in a cottage with their baby and used to sing together happily every day until he was drafted. His best friend was the one who delivered the news. She could never be complete again. She's describing him in past tense because he's no longer alive. "You were the brightest shade of sun I'd ever seen. Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest king." I imagine her singing this while sitting down in the fields. When she fell asleep, she dreamt of seeing him again and they talked. "Well I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first" "At last... and you are trying to be the death of me?" "But how could I have known.." Then the guitar solo is just them dancing for the very last time. "I was dreaming in the garden" Even if he was just in her head, she's glad to be able to see him again.
I love their music so much! It reminds me so much of my childhood and early adulthood in Appalachia. And their religiously based lyrics remind me of a far less toxic form of the faith I was raised in. Their music feels like home. Warm and comforting, even their sad or depressed songs. It’s like “We know how you feel because we’ve been there.”
I didn't really think about it until now but in the beginning the story of Adam and Eve is kind of romantic. God knew man couldnt do it alone and he gave him a woman,a wife. And the way they make this song is so beautiful. In many books of the bible talks about man and woman and the romance of it,its not just a plane boring 2,000 page book, its so much more.
I’m not joking I was listening to some of their songs and I started smelling a pine forest it’s probably my imagination but that shows the power of great music
idk if you're religious or not but I've heard a lot of ppl say that the presence of God the Father smells like pine. maybe this Christian song inspired you to be aware of him 🤷♀️
@@unclemoriarty1436 I am autistic and not religious so it’s more likely I have a very strong memory that the song reminded me of. But if you ever smell pine and you yourself are religious then that’s cool 👍
I love the ambiguity of the message of this song, it can mean a lot of things for anyone. If you're religious, this song is a hit, if you're not, it's still a hit! All though The Oh Hellos are Christian, they consider they're band secular, so whatever songs they make, it's for everyone, because it depends on how you view the message of the song, like an author to it's reader audience.
I finally read the comments and did not know this was Christian. I have not been paying attention to the lyrics, but what a new take on it, I feel as though I enjoy it more.
This song is permanently tied to a trip I took to alaska where I listened to it exclusively. They weren’t tied because of a reason, just coincidence. But I think it kind of works. It’s about being human, raw, and not making excuses for it. It’s about passion, and the truth. The pulse of life. The promise of meaning. Shucking off the layers of social training that facilitate the word-bound world of success. Anyway, it just makes me think someday, things might be different, and better.
and thus always to thoose who say christians are all preachers, Well done on this one, i know no one reads the comments of theese videos anymore, but i'm glad you folks are spreading the word and spreading good music at the same time.
Yes!! I love it so much, it is so powerful. I'm listening to it with my earbuds at full blast and sobbing; it makes me so happy. I hope you are having a most wonderful day/night
I love how all the songs in the album “ Through the deep dark “ are about hard times but when you listen to them at hard times they help you get through it
Lyrics (couple more lines at the end): I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first He'd put me deep, deep under so that he could work And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you At last, at last Bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last You were the brightest shade of sun I had ever seen Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest kings And like the dawn you woke the world inside of me You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you At last, and you will surely be the death of me But how could I have known? I was sleeping in the garden (oh oh) I can show you I was sleeping in the garden ? (oh oh) ***Such a cool song! So beautiful! The high part is really cool at "surely be the death of me" And yeah I didn't even realize it involved religion until reading some of the comments, either :D I had thought it was a love song
I know this is a biblical song but when I first heard it all I could think about was my fiancée. We’re 5 months out from our queer handfasting day, been together for just over three years. The first time we kissed was definitely an “at last” moment for me. Finally the perfect person for me. She’s everything I ever wanted in a partner and whenever I see her this song pops in my head.
Like a lot of others it seems, I had no idea this was a religious song. Knowing that now, the lyrics make a lot of sense. I thought it was just a beautiful song, sung by a woman who experienced a great emotion when thinking or seeing the person she loves. I suppose that's more or less the sentiment anyway. I'm not religious either like many here. But that doesn't change my appreciation for the song. It is beautiful. I will keep it in my playlist and keep enjoying it. Thank you The Oh Hellos :)
How I met beautiful songs: I searched for A beautiful world by Tim Myers Comes and Goes by Greg Laswell was recommended Then when I played it The Oh Hello's Hello My Old Heart was recommended I played it, then I found the band Sleeping at Last band which has originally 3 members and now left with one, Ryan O' Neal. I am binge watching Sleeping at Last videos. Ryan' s lyrics, use of instruments, sounds, are treasure.
Is this considered like Christian folk music, or soul, I'm trying to expand my music from just Broadway musicals and stumbled upon this band and fell in love, and I want to find more like it
Definitely folk! Tow'rs has a somewhat similar sound - try their songs "Belly of the Deepest Love" (about the crucifixion of Christ) and "December". Sarah Sparks also does Christian folk, it's vastly different from the Oh Hellos but still lovely. Try "Eustace Scrubb" or "The Gardener". Seryn's This is Where We Are album is the most Oh Hellos-esque music I've found. The album is clean and filled with the Oh Hellos deep and aching wonder - the lead singer is Christian and the lyrics (especially "On My Knees" have a Christian vibe). For them, I recommend "We Will All Be Changed", "Towering", and "Beach Song" from that album and "The Wind and the Storm" and "Foreign Fields" from their other album. All are stunning songs. Also highly recommend the Gray Havens, especially "She Waits", "Storehouse", "Stone" (the closest to TOH), and "Ghost of a King". Ever since I found TOH, I spent years looking for bands with a similar sound and faith and these are the fruits of my labors.
For me, this song just reminds me of meeting my partner while I was fighting my depression. Sleeping the Garden of depression when the brightest shade of sun found me and woke the world inside of me.
I know this is about Adam and Eve, but it reminds me of a mother watching her child run through a sunlit forest, full of wonder that has only just reawakened within her, and knowing that she would happily give her life for her family.
Came across this band while doing my Bonnaroo homework, scouting bands and making my schedule. Wow, what a moving song. Will be seeing you down on the farm next Sunday!

Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest king."
I imagine her singing this while sitting down in the fields. When she fell asleep, she dreamt of seeing him again and they talked.
"Well I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first"
"At last... and you are trying to be the death of me?"
"But how could I have known.."
Then the guitar solo is just them dancing for the very last time.
"I was dreaming in the garden"
Even if he was just in her head, she's glad to be able to see him again.
OW
Woah 😭❤️
I absolutely love your interpretation 🥹❤
This comment made me tear up.
The love of a woman...is mans greatest gift from God most high!
Wow, this song really gets me.... makes me remember that darkest places I've been and how "little angels" saved me from it....
I never get tired of this song.
I didn't really think about it until now but in the beginning the story of Adam and Eve is kind of romantic. God knew man couldnt do it alone and he gave him a woman,a wife. And the way they make this song is so beautiful. In many books of the bible talks about man and woman and the romance of it,its not just a plane boring 2,000 page book, its so much more.
and nine years ago, a gentle song was born and wound between trees and over rivers, beginning to infect the world with its beauty
I dedicated this song to my soulmate around two years ago, and every time I play it, I think of him.
It's been four years now. :)
This music is so great. I live at the beach and they are perfect beach songs!
I’m not joking I was listening to some of their songs and I started smelling a pine forest it’s probably my imagination but that shows the power of great music
woah, that's amazing! maybe you have synesthesia?
@@oddish3152 possibly! I am aware it’s common in autistic people. (I am autistic:).)
idk if you're religious or not but I've heard a lot of ppl say that the presence of God the Father smells like pine. maybe this Christian song inspired you to be aware of him 🤷♀️
@@unclemoriarty1436 I am autistic and not religious so it’s more likely I have a very strong memory that the song reminded me of.
The hairs on my body are standing on end. There is some real magic in this song.
This has strong cottagecore/fairycore vibes
Yes!! I love it so much, it is so powerful. I'm listening to it with my earbuds at full blast and sobbing; it makes me so happy. I hope you are having a most wonderful day/night
@@AutumnMarston aw thank you! It’s two in the morning lol I can’t sleep
@@E_Does_YT lmaooo me neither. It’s now 7:00 am and my parents are going to kill me 😭😂
All of their songs have that vibe. I love it. I’ve never heard a band like this!
I remember the days of this music...most beautiful time of my life.
I love how all the songs in the album “ Through the deep dark “ are about hard times but when you listen to them at hard times they help you get through it
All of your songs are magic.
Lyrics (couple more lines at the end):
I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first
He'd put me deep, deep under so that he could work
And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook
I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you
At last, at last
Bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last
You were the brightest shade of sun I had ever seen
Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest kings
And like the dawn you woke the world inside of me
You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you
At last, and you will surely be the death of me
But how could I have known?
I was sleeping in the garden (oh oh)
I can show you
I was sleeping in the garden ? (oh oh)
***Such a cool song! So beautiful! The high part is really cool at "surely be the death of me" And yeah I didn't even realize it involved religion until reading some of the comments, either :D I had thought it was a love song
Such a beautiful song we are dancing to this song this year at my dance studio💕
Outstanding band...pure...talented as hell...love these guys...
I’m not religious but this music is just so beautiful I can appreciate it either way
This song is so amazing! Our God is such an awesome Creator!
He surely is!
LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so many reminders of my first love who still resonates in my heart forever.
thanks so much for create such a beautiful song.
the beauty in the hearts of these musicians brings me to tears. i'm buying their albums on bandcamp :)
Thats so tear-jerking to hear! (In a good way haha).
Its nice to know that other people find comfort to this song.
A moment of silence for those who have not yet found this song.
(Deep, deep, deep, sigh)
Thank you, That is all.
There really needs to be more Christian music made in this style 🥰
I gree
Like a lot of others it seems, I had no idea this was a religious song. Knowing that now, the lyrics make a lot of sense. I thought it was just a beautiful song, sung by a woman who experienced a great emotion when thinking or seeing the person she loves. I suppose that's more or less the sentiment anyway. I'm not religious either like many here. But that doesn't change my appreciation for the song. It is beautiful. I will keep it in my playlist and keep enjoying it. Thank you The Oh Hellos :)
How I met beautiful songs:
I searched for A beautiful world by Tim Myers
Comes and Goes by Greg Laswell was recommended
Then when I played it The Oh Hello's Hello My Old Heart was recommended
I played it, then I found the band Sleeping at Last band which has originally 3 members and now left with one, Ryan O' Neal.
I am binge watching Sleeping at Last videos. Ryan' s lyrics, use of instruments, sounds, are treasure.
4:06 is definitely the best part......
I want to walk down the Aisle to this someday
PaperSailship My sister had, a couple years ago. :)
@@puppycatwiththefuzzypants5537 Aaww! Late, but I wish her and her husband a happy marriage!
My husband and I chose this song for our first dance at our wedding. We still love to listen to it and remember that day.
Heard it for the first time with the girl i loved. Every time i hear this it reminds me of her
You ever picture an animation in your head to match a song and then make yourself emotional over it
The music in this song is incredibly comforting. So damn beautiful!
Is this considered like Christian folk music, or soul, I'm trying to expand my music from just Broadway musicals and stumbled upon this band and fell in love, and I want to find more like it
The Gray Havens have a slightly different sound but it is similar, if you are looking for other stuff like this
EEEE I LOVE BROADWAY TOO
I RELATE TO THIS COMMENT
WHY ARE OH HELLOS FANS JUST THE BEST PEOPLE
Definitely folk!
Here to say that broadway musical music is bloody awesome. And Oh Hellos are also bloody awesome. Good day!
I usually hear it referred to as indie folk
I cant be the only one who doesn't want them to be famous because i feel so much trough these songs
One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard
For me, this song just reminds me of meeting my partner while I was fighting my depression. Sleeping the Garden of depression when the brightest shade of sun found me and woke the world inside of me.
I hope you both are happy together and wish you a blessed life ahead!
It’s so good, I can’t describe what feeling I’m feeling right now
What a beautiful thing.
reminds me of monsters and men
they do have a similar style, though this song is a bit more tame than most Of Monsters And Men songs
It really does.
I love of monsters and men. :)
Yeaaah. I love both.
Just like, mellowed down or watered down. Not in the bad way, but of monsters and men sounds more rock, and this sounds like mellow-
Best adventure songs I’ve ever listened to. You guys are amazing. ❤️🔥
I know this is about Adam and Eve, but it reminds me of a mother watching her child run through a sunlit forest, full of wonder that has only just reawakened within her, and knowing that she would happily give her life for her family.
QUE MÚSICA LINDA 😔❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Came here from Solider, Poet, King and know now in the marrow of my bones that The Oh Hellos are one of my favorite bands.
A very nice feeling of riding the echoes of sound! Thanks!
Ah nostalgia, I used to play this song whenever I played an Adventure Map in Minecraft, how the times has passed... Thank you TOH!
I can't even express the feelings I get when I listen to this-------
SAME 😭❤️❤️❤️
I'm so SO happy to see more people get into The Oh Hellos, let alone this underrated song of theirs!
So glad I found them!!
Makes me quake and tear, strong yet gentle; I love the song, Like The Dawn. Thankyou Tyler & Maggie

I came here searching for another band and found you guys wow I'm listening intensively now
Why have I just now found this band I love them so much
This song.. So beautifully written!
Enfim, enfim
E por certo você me levará a morte
Mas como eu poderia saber?
Eu estava dormindo no jardim
E como a alvorada, você desmancha a escuridão
Eu estava dormindo no jardim
Osso dos meus ossos
love this too much
This music is magic..
This pairs well with Hoizers "like real people do"
I love this song !!!
Your music is great. Thank you.
im not sorry about life anymore after I heard this song I'm thankful
Nice perspective.
If u stop to think, "Adam and Eve" can be a very good love story... Haha, I love this music! It's about the Bible(what's amazing) and it's different too!
(Srry if I wrote wrong, I'm brazilian 🤭)
This is so beautiful, I'm so happy I found it
