On my Dad’s side, they came to Northern Michigan in 1860’s from Sweden. Farm in the spring, summer and fall then in the winter they would log using the team of horses. Only logging we do now is to get the wood for the outside boiler. I love your channel because your family is so similar to mine. The dairy cows got sold back in the 70’s but we do raise some beef. Thank you so much for sharing your farm with the world. You guys rock !!
Brings back some good memories of working with my father cutting firewood. Your dad has a lot of experience and transferring knowledge to you is so very valuable. Treasure the opportunity and ensure you pass it on. Good video.
A proud Father and Son working together is a good thing to see. I miss those days when my Father was still alive, don't ever take it for granted, it is over all too soon. Thanks for another enjoyable video!
Some folks do some Pilates for exercise, some others haul log chains around their necks and drag 50 foot or more of 3/8” braided cable down through a ditch and up a seemingly 30 degree plus steep hill. Just sayin’ 😅
Great video! Your Dad is like mine the always ran the saw. This throws me back to age 7 to 20. Always cutting post or fixing fence. We used a mule to snake the post out. Lord it was work!! You don't need a gym membership when you have a farm to work on.
I use to go to the Logging Congress every year either in Green Bay or Escanaba. It was fascinating looking at all that special machinery they use. Always enjoy your videos. Hope to be at the Farm Show next year down in Berlin.
Glad to see dad wearing chaps. I had an accident one time and set a saw down as it was idling down. I accidentally put it on my leg about where my pocket was. Fortunately I was wearing heavy Carharrt pants and the saw just barely got into the pocket. I stopped working and immediately bought some chaps before continuing.
I've pulled hundreds of cords of logs out with our farmi log winch and diesel ford 4000. Just the right size for weaving thru the woods. Front weights would help a lot more. Logging thousands dead ash trees this winter on 5 different properties. I sell firewood year round so the more I log the more I save not buying semi loads to cut and split. I do roughly 130 full cords of firewood every year by myself. Hopefully get a firewood processor soon or rent one for a week or 2 to get all my logs split and drying for fall 2025 sales. My brother has an iron mule forwarder with 2k original hrs that we use for piling logs on the landing and grabbing the big logs in the woods. It can pick up a 30" diam. Wet red oak log. We cut over 150k bf every year on our sawmill . He just got a woodmizer lt70 wide. 55hp diesel, 35" max cut width. Debarker , joystick controls, hydraulic chain turner. Toe boards, board return fingers. She flys through pine and cedar logs
Just a couple of tips: 1 it is a lot safer to always put the chain close to the end of the log. If not the end can get stuck and the pull of the cable makes the log come at you with the back end, it happens unbelievably fast, both when winching and driving. 2 if you have a snatch block that can be fasten to a secure tree or something it is easy to change the direction of the pull, get the log sideways a bit and you don’t have to move the tractor. Thanks for sharing how you work.
I actually have those same hearing protectors. I like them (AM/FM/BT) but yeah, none of them really are "hoodie" or "knit hat" capable LOL. Fit well with just a ball cap type hat. Yes on the dirt, I cut a lot of firewood and never too thrilled about dragging thru mud. All that grit ends up hurting the chain, dulls quick. I get a lot of kind folks giving me trees out of backyards, but those can be full of hidden plant hooks, clothsline parts, etc. I found glass insulators in some wood that was inside an old trailer park. Always a story with wood cutting.
one time I got 1370 & 6/18 semi mount plow stuck bad on hillside along paved road a county road grader passing by saw me pulled out 1000ft cable pulled me out like butter couldn't believe the power that winch had that far out & free
Having 2 or more people working is a good safety practice on the steep slopes. I prefer to have another person if there are standing trees of any size to cut. Did work alone if there was down wood to be drug up or cut to length, but as was stated...common sense is important.
never saw one those great idea what is max pull on the winch when i was able to burn wood i would take my d6c cat shove down dead trees get them out in open then hook all i could pull up over hil l to top hay field make big pile go to cutting never used live trees i have enough land there always is a dead tree somewhere love you,re channel
I have been at it for many years too and I think the guy is an idiot. When he comes on the video I fast forward so I don't have to listen to the moron.
I’m just amazed after seeing all the hard work your dad has done he still runs around like a 20 year old
My Dad will be 83 in March and I think he can still out work me. 😮
Thats why he's in shape and loves what hes doing

Frage: Warum sind die Eschen tot? In Deutschland ist es ein Pilz der sehr viele Eschen befallen hat.
Enerald aah borer. Invasive insect from Asia.
That is an awesome tractor and attachment. Biggest Deere I’ve seen.
Your cover crop looks great
Where there is a will there is a way. U have both. Great video. Reminds me of when I cut fire wood. Thanks.

Good video bud
Leave the brush piles for the bunny wabbitts
A saw mill is something most farmers could use.
I love your logging, tree cutting videos.. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🪵🪓🪵🪓🪵🪓
Awesome video. I’ve been waiting for a logging video, thinking of getting one myself. What make and model? What is the pulling capacity?
You can tell that winch has been used a lot. What's not to like about that.
You guys should get a pto powered wood chipper for the brush piles it makes good mulch
That one tree looked like a big old snake slithering when it was coming downhill...lol
Y’all could use a skidder but that would mean a lot of milk money I suppose. Hahaha, no sooner had I posted this you started talking about skidders! 😂

You should be using two tractors. When you are pulling something hard you chain a tractor infront of the cable tractor.
George has had that 20 yrs, I think he knows what he's doing.
Good thing you are not in charge
