I'm not Vietnamese, but I am from San Jose. My parents used to tell me how rough San Jose was -- riddled with property crime and homicide. And, the only people buying property in the downtown area were Vietnamese immigrant families and Mexicans. There were abandoned and decrepit buildings there on Santa Clara St, San Fernando, and Market that quickly became small Vietnamese jewelry shops, banh mi shops, blue collar services, and markets. In the 80s and 90s, Vietnamese Americans helped kickstart San Jose back up again.

Thank you professor Nguyen thanh Viet so very much for publishing wonderful story, “The Sympathizer”. I did cried many times in all 4 eps. I was 9 yrs old when the Fall of Saigon happened. It was an extremely tragic that I will never forget for the rest of my life😢.
I can’t wait for the next episodes. Congrats and we’re so proud of you.

What a moving story. It's much harder to be prejudiced against refugees and other immigrants after listening to his story. It's been said the purpose of fiction is to broaden our empathy, and he is a master of doing so.

What a lovely thing for Gayle to recognize the producer and editor of this essay. Class act, as always. And a lovely discovery as I watch (and now read) 'The Sympathizer' and learn more about the author. Worth re-running, for many timely reasons.

How autobiographical is the story, "War Years"? from Viet Thanh Nguyen's "The Refugees". The grocery store owned by the author's parents in the short story has the same name as the actual grocery store, except written in English. I love his writing and think this video gives a very good indication of some of the hell that refugees endured and continue to endure. I'm off to buy more of his writing asap.

Very impressive works & inspiring words, Professor Nguyen. Your stories resonate deeply. Read your TS with some international friends. Had contentious discussions. Personally, I was astounded by the artistry of your storytelling & the mastery of your execution in writing- a rightly winner of the PP & other accolades. Will read more of your works. TYVM 🙏

I remember when your book came out and the elders in my family were talking about you, calling you a communist agent (a sympathizer 😆). I told them to chill out and it’s only a book. Then I watched the show on HBO and I was like 😲 Yo , maybe those elders were right 😆 The show is really good 👍🏼 The evacuation scene when the bus passed Majestic hotel made my heart dropped, my grandfather’s office was on the first floor of that hotel. I was going to show it to my parents, but it was April 30th and I didn’t want to kill them 🤣
