    We want your reactions to this raw moment! What do you think about streaming? Does it support artists?

    • @PersonnetaimeGuy
      @PersonnetaimeGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It’s so insidious because streaming services has become the best (and basically the only way) to dig in the crates, listen to new music and learn about artists for the consumer.
      Then , artists are penalized and need to sell some mugs and backpacks in order to get their bread instead of actually focus on perfecting their craft.
      If you really dig an artist you’re streaming, get off streaming services for a month or two in order to save a buck and buy his or her vinyl (if the artist put one out) . Artists are workers, and should be paid as such if we enjoy and value their art.

    • @brothajamessd1670
      @brothajamessd1670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Unfortunately, there are so many artists that are willing to take that fraction of a penny. If, as a unified force, Black artists could impact the streaming service’s bottom line, there could be some negotiation. Black Star is in a position to survive without streaming, but other artists may feel dependent on streaming for potential growth of their fan base.

    He is 100% on point. Consumers have gotten way too greedy, way too entitled, way too empowered to bully artists into this urgency. Art isn’t urgent. Art is natural. We have so much diluted art, untalented work through expedited projects, limited experiences because we rush our artists.

      audiences? yes, sometimes
      but, I took it more so as Record Execs tryna put they hand up your back to move you here and there, and tell you when to smile - and what you're worth
      i love this - reminds me of "The Industry" by DarkManX
      the creators of art that reflect the True Spirit of anything is NOT TO BE BOUGHT AND SOLD the way these business ppl wanna commodify It
      I'm not mad at streaming for convenience - but the artists deserve their Due for their labor
      (and digital isn't infallible)
      Artists deserve OWNERSHIP of their art - unless they choose to sell it **Freely**
      - as opposed to selling/giving it away out of ignorance, conditioning ("this is how it's always been done" 🙄🙄😠), desperation, etc.
      I'm just glad it's easier to build independent nowadays bcz of internet and digital - though, it can take So Much to build, and Live (not just scrape by) when you do it that way
      - but it can be done
      that has always been my goal - bcz the instances when business and "ppl elements" started coming into my scope, it always went Left, with who's gonna take advantage, and how
      i gotta teach myself everything - and be able to make it from top to bottom, by myself - just to make sure someone can't use my lack of know how as a means to put me in the corner regarding my own stuff smh
      I'm probably gonna have to leave my music to someone, bcz i don't see me getting it out before i die - i never wanted the fame anyway
      i just wanted to do what Moved Me - and see where my talent could go artistically - if it moves someone else in a positive way - that's a blessing
      i don't think i need to be here for that part 🙃✌🏾

      "Consumers have gotten way too greedy, "
      Not just with art.
      Consumers have been told by greedy corporations that they deserve cheap
      chocolate, palm oil, gasoline, meat, milk, ...
      just because they don't want to pay a fair price to the producers.
      They making billions for their managers and stakeholders, and trying to "empower" us to be complicit in their scheme.

    100% on this. As a small time painter the control that people want to have over you because they purchase your art is a strange feeling. Recently went through a situation and this video really helped me feel more validated for making the decision to go with what I believe is right for me and my creative path. Thank you Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli for putting this strong statement of honoring your creativity and not compromising to please people that are not involved in the actual process of creating the art.

    More power to you (Talib) and Yasiin on this one...you said it in a rhyme 20 years ago...and now you're in a position to flip the script and live it out.
    "Not free, we only licensed, not live, we just exciting
    cause the captors own the masters to what we writing"
    Control your narrative to the fullest you can. - Production to Retail. Manufacture it in the motherland if possible - Real ones will support.
    The CD era was the introduction to the destruction of the artist-supporting music industry as soon as digital formats were introduced that was it. The value and quality of most recorded music dropped. The streaming services have exponentially sped it up, I think very few people listen to albums in their entirety anymore.
    I recently got Common's A Beautiful Revolution on Vinyl because I assume that's the best way I can support a valued artist.
    Now when "Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli are Black Star" releases...I'm hoping there is a vinyl version, seriously vinyl is second only to live.

    Yasiin dropping knowledge as usual! I can't wait to watch the full video. But I will say that audience/artist interaction has changed quite a bit, but not how a lot of people may think. It seems to have reversed. Fans feel "entitled" to what and when artist put out, and some artist feel "entitled" to where and when fans come to their shows. Of has always been an exchange of energy and when it is imbalanced it can turn sour. I'm ultra excited for Black Star II and because it is a quality product I will actually purchase it. But how I've always looked at streaming is the new radio. It isn't designed to make the artist money, it is simply a promotional tool to generate "buzz" for the artist to tour on. (Especially in the more recent history of the industry). Thanks The People's Party. You all always deliver the goods.

    To Talib (I'm an old, ignorant head, pardonme),
    I'm in the winds of a different cycle right now, so The Pulse of Hip-Hop is just a feathery something on the edge of my Screen... But it makes me so happy, proud, and relieved to still see you preaching on this corner, after so many...
    It's also nice to have a prophet of the same era at the ready to give the Good Word to those of us, in different cycles, who find themselves brought back for occasions such as this.
    Mysterious ways.

    As an artist, I felt what Yasiin said to the core! We're not being offered what the music is truly worth! 0.004 per listen is robbery! I think there needs to be a universal streaming service that is artist led and funded. Our shares should be our shares. Not the tiny crumbs that Spotify and Apple are offering! Tidal and Napster pay out 1-3 pennies, but nobody really uses their services......

    I think the problem isn't the fans but social media and promotion strategies. I read about the new Blackstar album on facebook some months ago and Talib Kweli talked about it some weeks ago. So now fans are waiting for it because they love your music. If nobody had promoted it before it was out the fans wouldn't even know about it.

    I agree. When do you split up a penny? I mean I’m on TH-cam. I don’t understand how you split up a penny. How come you can’t get like once in per view. I mean someone to explain the mathematics to me. I’m self-employed, but I don’t have my own contract. So someone’s telling me what they’re willing to pay me to whatever. I can take it or leave it. The one thing I do like about being self-employed there’s no schedule. Can’t nobody tell me I got to be here on such and such day. I wouldn’t even take a contract that required that.

      People really need to be buying the music. Its unrealistic to expect these companies to be able to pay artists equally with how much fucking noise and saturation there is when it comes to music that gets released. And I'm not just speaking out of my ass here, I'm an artist with music on Spotify. And to be truthful, especialyl when you're starting out, audience numbers increasing is what you should be worried about. Because when you start getting into the real money makers like merch, CDs and vinyl, you have to have enough fans to be able to at the very least break even for the cost of manufacturing of whatever you're doing. Vinyl costs a lot of money and of course people usually charge more for a vinyl than a cd but it also has a much higher minimum number of copies that needs to be manufacturing than CD and the more pressed for either format, the lower the cost per unit becomes.
      I'm not worried about money from streaming, its for people to listen to me conveniently without having to spend their hard earned money first. You wanna support me? Buy the 12"s/albums on iTunes/bandcamp/Amazon or whatever.

    As a fan, I think Mos doesn't get that the people "who love music" will stream your work and still pay for it. I still buy Bandcamp albums of artists I discover on streaming platforms because I'm trying to support the artist and show appreciation. The streaming platforms help you reach exponentially more people "who love music" that are willing to pay you directly for your art. I think the artists(and potentially us fans too) should put their weight behind reducing the barrier to this direct payment of artists from the platforms. The portion record labels pay artists, is something else on it's own...

    • @kaydee1485
      @kaydee1485 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he's talking more about how the artist's percentages are dictated to them rather than them being involved in the process of deciding what is fair. In the streaming aspect it's not about the audience but the 'middlemen'.
