    I have been teaching this method in my chair yoga classes for years now!
    I regularly come back to rewatch to give myself a refresher.
    I think you explain so clearly, yet simply what is going on, which is a gentle reminder to me to not over complicate my teaching with knowledge. H.E.L.P - so easy!
    My clients always seem surprised they are able to do this without using the chair to push them up! I say "we're going to practice our sit to stand now" and it's smiles all round!
    I've added to it the importance of lowering back into the chair in a controlled manner rather than crashing down speedily, to help strengthen the thighs.
    I hope that everything I show my clients helps them with their everyday tasks, not just benefiting them whilst they attend my classes.

    Very interesting! Modern medicine is impressive no doubt, but we definitely still have a lot to learn. Which is _exactly_ why you should NEVER give up if you're living with chronic pain. Sometimes you just have to find what works for you. So never stop trying! =)
    I recently recovered from over a decade of daily suffering. I was reliant on medications to get through every day (including high doses of opioids), on disability, spent the majority of my time in bed, and gained 45lbs. I was so sick of suffering. I constantly prayed I would die young. I had lost all hope. But today; I feel amazing! I have a job, work out, lost 35lbs so far, and gained my independence back. I'm off all but 1 medication, which I'm currently tapering off of. I really wish I could go back and talk to my past self.

    I learned this forcefully do to a herniated disc. The daily stuff i did before totally changed and it's really about the basic movements you never think about like lifting the toilet lid, getting up from a chair, putting on the pants...literally everything became conscious movement once I hurt my lumbar disc.

    That photo of someone sitting in a car is the exact reason I have to drive a car that is 25 years old.... because it doesn't have a BUCKET SEAT. I tell the car dealerships I will never buy a new car because of the horrifically painful seats. I then point at the seats in their vehicles and dare them to walk into Nebraska furniture mart and find ANY chair that is shaped like that.

    How nice for the patients you were able to rehabilitate. What about the patients like me who have a slipped disk so severe that the bone is broken and the whole thing is pressing on my spinal cord? In addition, I have a tear in the rotator cuff on my right shoulder. And I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia on top of everything else and I am so tired of being in pain. Is there really anything you could do to correct these serious physical ailments? I refuse to have spinal fusion because for so many patients, it makes the pain even worse. I’m almost 62 and was a long haul truck driver for 16 years. I have been disabled since I was 52 because of severe back pain and sciatica.

    Postural distortions (poor posture) is the most common cause of chronic muscle and joint pain. There are very few statements I can make with 100% assuredness. This is one!

  • @jackmeioff3444
    @jackmeioff3444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You should also instruct on how to sit! While its basically the reverse of this stand-up, its not as easily taught, and peoples lack of strength in the lowering function, along with balance, is common. People drop into their sitting, they don't control it, therefore they put their body into bad positions from which they struggle to extricate.

      Diana Boughner great question 😊 ideally try the same mechanics in reverse, keep the chest and eyes up, keep hands on thighs ... The only time hands on thighs will not work on the way down is if someone is really in a lot of pain and is deconditioned but that is a more case specific type of instruction 🙂

      We specialize in working with chronic pain populations, this is exactly why we demonstrated this, it’s one of the main goals we have with all of our clients, teaching them to be able to get in and out of a chair, in and out of bed, in and out of the car, without pain. It’s one of those things that until you lose it you don’t know what you’ve got. 🙏

    I have a question. But first, let me say I do believe fascia has a definite role in chronic pain. But, how do you tell in a client whether it is a joint deformity, muscle weakness, or tight fascia that is causing their immobility and pain? And if it is all three, after you treat the fascia, don't you still need to strengthen the muscle and possibly repair the joint? The example you gave about the person who had no cartilage in their knee and chronic pain, I do not understand. Once you have treated the fascia in that person, wouldn't he or she still need rehab for the muscle surrounding the joint and joint replacement? I guess what i am thinking is, just like we need to acknowledge and treat the fascia, we also need to treat the muscular and skeletal system. I work in rehab and also teach senior exercise classes and this is a fascinating subject to me.

    • @SterlingStructuralTherapy
      @SterlingStructuralTherapy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Theresa Mitchell EXCELLENT questions!! regarding the bone on bone, here is a presentation explaining what I believe to be the mechanism behind these people’s success WITHOUT the need for joint replacement th-cam.com/video/ENzMp0IO_RM/w-d-xo.html

    • @SterlingStructuralTherapy
      @SterlingStructuralTherapy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Theresa Mitchell and to answer further ... I would answer that bone muscle fascia and nerves... are all very much connected ... so as we treat one we are affecting all systems. The truth is that the results a client gets the relief and sustained release and returned range of motion is the evidence that we are treating in the right direction. We always combine Fascia release with Postural re-education and strengthening exercises, this is the “homework “ our client is responsible for. So we don’t just treat the Fascia passively (manipulations) but we INSIST on the client taking an active role to retrain both their nervous system and muscles 💪😊 hope that makes sense

    Spinal surgery is always elective unless there is a trauma that causes Mobility or paralysis issues or if the patient has lost bowel or bladder function. Otherwise it is considered elective and that means that it is not medically necessary and could be treated with more conservative options initially aside from drugs and or surgery if you ask the same surgeons how often they refer toprovider like Diana prior to operating on their patient I think may you may be surprised that none of them offer Bodywork and postural re-education as a conservative measure unless the patient ask for it or they have no financial interest in the surgical Revenue

    • @amycuaresma

      *, I am a registered nurse but I also have a cervical spine that has been MRI and shows substantial degeneration. As a self observational experiment I showed the same films and report 5 orthopedic surgeons and two neurosurgeons. I d identified my personal information so they did not know that they were looking at my films I am a registered or nurse. All five surgeons recommended that this patient should be seen by them or their office and that they would recommend some level of different surgeries across-the-board. I then took my thing report to a trusted neurosurgeon and he and his assistant both agreed that at this time conservative measures would be the most beneficial and that he would not operate on that's fine we're as orthopedic surgeons if you're having spine surgery do not see an orthopedic surgeon go to a neurosurgeon as a second opinion or a final opinion

My muscles are 100% atrophied in my dominant arm and about 85% in my other. I have & am going paralyzed in my arms!! Even Mayo Clinic has never seen my condition before & an additional TOP 14 surgeons after it taking 21 yrs to get diagnosed properly & or nor could help me. I probably saw another 80 drs, MRI readers & mostly surgeons b4 getting diagnosed. I ALSO have RSD, SPS, a growth on my pituitary gland inside my brain & i have cysts in both knees that fill up & cause sciatica in both, i got herniated and bulging disc’s in my middle back also...ANYWAYS MY QUESTION; because i have no muscles to hold up my posture, how should i go about doing some of yr particular recommendations...? My surgeons have even said they cant get mad at me for not having the best posture. Thank u in advance!!!

There is no way I can do it the way it's instructed in this video 😬 How can I protect my severely aching back (I'm already using lumbar support cushion and tailbone support cushion for sitting)?

      It might be worth your while to book a 45 minute virtual session, and see if it would benefit you! The website has some awesome client testimonials, and the "homework" is~5 minutes at the beginning and end of the day! While you can't stand up often during those long stretches, there are likely other ideas you could integrate. And walking is one of the easiest "do anywhere" exercises - even just 15 minutes!
      As a massage therapist for nearly 40 years, I am so grateful for a foundation of good body mechanics from Qigong and ballet, and wish more of my clients had access to this information!

      Hmmm Interesting take. By showing one way I reduce all others? 🤔

    • @kingofaikido
      @kingofaikido 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Life360Summit No, no, that's not what I mean. The AT people are careful not to bend the back of the neck. They are adamant about that. Eyesight is not as important as what they call 'Primary Control.' Primary Control is also related to a reduction of the stress response. When you bend the head relative to the torso, however, you create tension there which spreads throughout the body's musculature, thereby inhibiting free movement and contributing to the stress response, which as you know, basically involves, muscularly speaking a cascade of responses, similar to a sudden reversion to the fetal position, but with raised shoulders. I know, it sounds counter-intuitive but numerous studies have shown that this is true, unless, of course, you wish to challenge established findings. Check out Wilfred Barlow on this on the experiments done on soldiers exposed to sudden loud sounds. The eyes are designed to scan the environment at a distance. They are not needed to scour enemies or predators so close that they are right there in front of a sitting person. Turns out the whites of the eyes do a good job with threat detection, so that we don't need to stare straight at a looming object or something which sideswipes us. Movement anomalies are picked up with the whites. The ears are really what pick up threatening sounds. So, yeah, you could say, I am fundamentally opposed to the way you show how to stand. However, the idea of keeping straight is something I would support, just 'straight' without tension. It's taken me a few years to figure out how to do that. Hope to do a TED talk on it. Cheers. :)
