The Stanley Brothers perform "If I Lose" at Oak Leaf Park in Luray, Virginia on 7-4-61. From their "Stanley Series Volume 4 - Number 2". Uploaded by request.
Great, as always. Carter ain't dissin' Earl....he's just sayin' you ain't gonna hear "Earl's Breakdown" up here cause Ralph can't or wouldn't pick it. Interesting variation of Shuffler's gtr brk from the original recorded version. Also like how Carter almost speaks "I don't care" on the chorus. Luray VA on the 4th of July '61 - oh yeah, Baby, don't get no better!
The flatt and scruggs and stanley brothers rivalry and disdain for each other was very present during the 60s. At one point Lester Flatt got in a fight with carter over lester saying Ralph couldn't pick the banjo
@2ndgeneration They were published but I believe they are out of print. This is from a big series called "The Stanley Series" that is a ton of live shows.
That's just the way men spoke to each other back then. Very direct and Frank. Before the pro-feminism campaign took hold. I miss those days, sad they are gone.
Thank GOD for The Stanley Brothers!
Love these ole Stanley Brother Tunes!!!

Great Bluegrass by the Stanley Brothers
"You dont need to ask for Earl's breakdown up here, you ain't gonna get it boy" carter was such a badass

Does anybody know if Ralph wrote this song, or should it be credited to someone else?
I say, ol'boy, could you turn it up a bit; I can't hear.
No kiddin'! I was -30!
@BGRASSCAT
Any specific requests, Grasscat?
Who does the bass break?
Earl couldn't tie Carter's shoes
Hold your tongue boy. Why would Earl do that?? Pretty good banjo player. You idiot
Carter couldnt play rythem for shit. All boom no chick. Lester was obviously a more accomplished musician let alone Earl.
@@keeganbluegrassgood God there's always one in the crowd
You can't lose
They never hit a sour note even live on stage

They aint got nothing on earl
Would you care to go research record sales during the 50s and 60s I think the numbers would disagree
Wow, their instruments are really out of tune!
I thought so too at first. I think it's just one of them that has a bum root note somewhere or something.
