    Sam is usually pretty on the money, but this is a poor take from him.
    1) you don't need to massively improve your team to have an A. If a Super Bowl winning team keeps all their best players and then makes their normal draft picks, do they get a C or B because they didn't improve on... being the best team in football?
    2) saying "I don't know if the Bengals are better than they were four months ago" is wild. DJ Reader is a monster; he's also a net average player in the pass rush, which got solidly better by replacing him with Sheldon Rankins. They're significantly better at RT AND at swing tackle, better at TE, much more explosive and younger at RB, likely better at WR3, stronger pass rush and major improvements at DT3/4 with Jenkins and Jackson, and massively improved at safety.
    It doesn't make any sense to grade a team based on "what they lost" if they've replaced it entirely, apart from Reader's run defense. Did the Rams take a hit for "losing" Goff but gaining Stafford? Do the Vikings take a huge hit for losing Danielle Hunter... even though they got Jonathan Greenard? That line of thinking doesn't work.

    • @humblemidwest4251
      @humblemidwest4251 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Agreed. Reader was a monster but they still got gashed last year anyway because they had no depth at that spot. They basically swapped 1 for 3 at DT. I loved Reader but I think I’d rather have depth there over spending money you don’t really have on 1 aging player. Murphy will bring an added element to the pass rush in his sophomore year to go along with Rankins pass rush. Jenkins is an immediate rotation guy to help stop the run; who knows what they get with Jackson. Point is they’ve invested in the D-Line over the past two years so I don’t see how it’s some giant issue letting 1 piece walk. Same with WR - Irwin, Burton, Jones, Gesicki, Iosivas… you’re telling me those guys can’t fill Boyd’s void? At this point in his career he wasn’t really a major piece anymore anyway; the interest for him in FA showed that. Crazy lol.

      This is possibly the best Bengals team, in terms of talent AND depth, in the Burrow era. Or at least, it has the best possible ability to be the best team. I'm very happy what we did this off-season. I didn't get everyone I wanted, but damn....they did incredible considering.. I don't think Sam can stand how well the Bengals FO is doing. I think it's because he's a Browns fan, right??

  • @liamzechman2143
    @liamzechman2143 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

    Tyler Boyd only signed for 4.5 million, the Bengals could have easily afforded that, they are intentionally letting the older slower Boyd walk so they can be younger and more explosive at that position. Only real loss is DJ Reader at this point and idk losing a guy who tore his quad and replacing him with Rankins and Jenkins doesn't really seem like a negative. Joe Mixon was let go for the same reason Tyler Boyd was.

      Not to mention Trenton Irwin, Andrei Iosivas, and Charlie Jones. WR3 might be by committee for a bit, until someone takes a clear step forward, but there’s plenty of talent on the roster to replace Boyd’s production.

  • @humblemidwest4251

    Dude on the right always has a weak case against the Bengals lol. The only single position where they got worse from a starting perspective was at DT with Reader, but they improved big time depth-wise there. They’re way better at safety and OL in terms of starters and depth, better at WR and TE. As good/unchanged if not better at literally every other position. Reader is the only loss he can make a case for, but they adressed it with Rankins, Jenkins and Jackson. I’d almost rather those 3 than just Reader and Zach Carter.

    • @chrisw647
      @chrisw647 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Aside from all that, no one knows how good DJ Reader will really be this year coming off his 2nd quad injury, 1 for each leg now. Had they kept DJ, this guy would probably be complaining about how they kept an injured DJ Reader instead of replacing him

    • @humblemidwest4251
      @humblemidwest4251 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@chrisw647 I was literally thinking the exact same thing but my comment was long enough already lol. Thank you, totally agree. Bengals fans loved Chido too but he just wasnt quite the same guy last year. Is Turner and/or Hill an upgrade? Maybe, maybe not, but I definitely think it’s smarter to bet on your youth. When you have 2 guys that are top 3 at their position you’re going to have to find ways to save money.

    • @jasonandres8340
      @jasonandres8340 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @AnthonyMercado-1988 That argument can be made for every rookie in the league, but year after year... nearly every single NFL team decides to move on from the player they knew who was expecting a big contract and replaced them with a rookie who has never played before.
      Also, do you know how many games he's going to miss while still recovering from his Quad injury at the end of the season? Because, it's virtually a guarantee that he's going to be missing some games to start next year....PUP?
      Who knows if this was a good move yet, but what is known is the past track record of age 30+ NFL defensive lineman who are trying to come back from their 2nd very significant lower leg injury within the past 4 years... its not a very good track record!

    @danieldemick2767 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I really don’t think it’s defensible to say there’s a position the Bengals are weaker at. Reader can’t be replaced, sure, but Rankins is an upgrade at 3T and especially for pass rushing. Jenkins and Jackson are also likely significantly better than Carter/Tupou so the DT room as a whole is significantly upgraded

  • @jonathanw.4694
    @jonathanw.4694 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The only position you might say the Bengals are worse at is at NT in losing Reader, but he was looking for more money and coming off a significant injury. Even though they didn’t replace him directly, they are deeper at DT and better at pass rush.
    Their safety room is going to be better, more cohesive with Bell and Stone They upgraded at OT with Mims and Brown. The TE room is definitely better (younger, and possibly found future starting TE) and they got younger, quicker and more explosive with Burton over Boyd. How you can argue that you’re not sure if they’re better 🤷🏾‍♂️

    He keeps saying the office created the holes . He just admitted that departures of talent are inevitable due to cap space / other player obligations. He said they did a good job of back filling those holes . I believe, given the resources and the way the franchise prefers to have some money available going into the next season . I think they have done a great job of that . Replacing players that are cap casualties or lost to free agency is exactly the point of the entire grade . I think Cincinnati did that better than almost every team out there. In fact , Duke Tobin should get a bonus for the effort he put in to the 2024 roster. Hats off!

    Sam what world you living in? They definitely upgraded at some spots and how do you knock a team for filling in spots where people left with equal or better players?
    How was Geno Stone (led AFC in picks last year) not an addition? Or Vonn Bell? Or adding two starting caliber RTs to replace one who left? Or adding Rankins and Jenkins in addition to Jackson at DT? That upgrades their pass rush from that position and helps cover run loss from DJ leaving.
    They have easily one of the best WR rooms in the league, added multiple pass-catching TEs, and replaced their starting back with a better fit too.

    it's interesting how little we've discussed the LB position. No depth there, is it because the Bengals plan to run a ton of nickel and dime? I think the Bengals got better with youth in this draft. I am only concerned about the O line (especially the coach) an edge rusher outside of Hendrickson and the LB's. I like everything else, I hope they use some sort of fullback or TE as a fullback more and do more play action instead of shotgun and passing too often.

How is a team not better when they add a running back that fits the scheme? (Hey Sam, do your homework. Moss thrives running out of the shotgun, Mixon never did....Moss pass blocks....Mixon never did). Trent Brown is a clear upgrade over Jonah Williams and what’s more, they added Mims. D.J. Reader is being portrayed as a God Like DT when the facts are that even when he played, we were getting run on. Reader is/was a good player. But life goes on. To not give credit that they added Sheldon Rankins and drafted Kris Jenkins is laughable. Sure, neither is a true nose, but this could be offset to a certain extent by the Bengals getting more pressure from the DTs. They also added Mike Gesicki, clearly upgrading that position as well. I now openly question your commitment to learning about the teams you have opinions about. Obviously, you aren't doing the work. To conclude that this team isn't any better based on losing a 30-year-old Nose Tackle and completely looking the other way on the additions is embarrassing for you as a professional. Do the work.
